Why is it I always discover bands after one of the member dies?

Quite a great piece of Doom Metal right here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFfZYyOgjhM) and here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9TvcAMENJE&feature=relmfu)

And for those that like folk metal (and for those that are going to go see them at Soundwave in a few months time) Turisas - Supernaut (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MC7VffvI2I)
These guys are amazing, cannot wait to finally see them.

After sifting through a shit-tone of .wma's courtesy of 1AZRAEL1 (Horrible, horrible things :p) and .mp3's courtesy of another mate, I spent quite a bit of time yesterday listening to Judas Priest (More than I have ever had) which is basically "The 1st time" I've listened to them and I've got to say: I'm a fan.;)

I'm, hence, currently listening to them via 'The Essential - Judas Priest' of which I purchased for $13.00 at JB-Hifi earlier this morning and I'm absolutely digging it!

2 Discs covering 30 years of Hella Metal, from a band I basically knew nothing about up until yesterday - F*** I love this genre! :D
(Subsequently; I've also identified that my tastes lie with bands that formed prior to 2000, specifically 1995 and earlier :p)

Priest are the founders of that dual guitar speed metal sound that influensed so many of the earlier thrash bands.

That twin CD is a great way to be introduced to the might & power of the Priest.

Pretty much everything of Judas Priest from 'Sad Wings of Destiny' to 'Defenders of the Faith' is well worth it.
After you are done with Priest, you can jump across to Mercyful Fate.

@Prowl & Demonac: They certainly are in many ways just as definitive as Sabbath were for the genre and I'm thoroughly loving the 34 Tracks tracks that I have in front of me! :D

As for Mercyful Fate, and by extension King Diamond, I do have a bit of their/his stuff as 1AZRAEL1 is a big proponent of 'em. :D:cool:
Indeed I shall have to give them a little more "Air Time" once I've finished gorging myself on Judas Priest. ;):p

To reiterate what I've said in another place, with regards to Tony Iommi's recent diagnosis of (Early Stage) Lymphatic Cancer:

I'd like to send the best possible vibes to Iommi, his family and those by extension, so that he might conquer this persistent scourge of humanity.

"Praise be to the Pantheon of Fallen Metal Gods; please aid this giant (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Iommi) in his hour of need so as to prevent the world from losing yet another of it's most treasured beacons of light".

Dani from 'Cradle of Filth' would get a lot of his inspiration from King.

A quick correction: MF released 2 albums before splitting up and letting King go his own way. They reformed again many years later. I think they are no more again, as King seems to release albums under 'King Diamond' only nowadays.

Ever heard COF cover of Devil Woman? King does guest vocals on it. Quite an awesome cover.

Talking about covers, Lita Ford singing Only Women Bleed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgTl_-T-hVI). She does it well.

And a classic from a great Aussie Metal band Vanishing Point (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SE0dajnuHk&feature=related) and the song that first got me into them (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zw5loX5fWxs) when I saw it on Rage many many a year ago when they played good stuff. I bring this up, because after 8 years of searching (not very hard :p) I finally bought their debut album with those 2 songs on it. Fantastic band, I seen them on a few occasions. And a newer song of theirs. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muuixmV0Kyw&feature=related)

I just love what Oderus Urungus of GWAR had to say about it.

The dude is amazing, such a unique singing voice.

If you can get your hands on it, Charlemagne:By Blood and the Cross, is a fantastic album. Some great riffs, with Ol Drac singing is worth the money I spent getting it. So far I have only found it on Amazon, but sure you could find it on other sites online. Doubt you will ever see it locally.

Me too; I was lucky enough to see them for the first time in January of 2010, they had a Sideways Show when they were out here supporting "Mechanize" at Soundwave.
(That was the last time they were out here I believe )

Even managed to get my shirt signed by both Dino & Burton, needless to say that shirt has never been worn nor seen the light of day since! :D

Nice! I've seen them twice - once at Selina's Coogee Bay Hotel and then again at the Enmore. Both tours were early 2000's (I have the tix stubs at home).

At the Selina's gig, Dino threw his pick into the crowd and somehow I managed to snatch it out of the air in almost complete darkness. I have it framed at home  You may recall that that was the show that Fear Factory was 'ambushed' by fans after the show because they stopped a few doors down from the venue to pick up pizzas. I wasn't one of those fans, but I remember the police rushing in and the van with the band inside speeding off.

Wasn't close enough to the stage (was sitting closer to stage 2 in the stands waiting for Slipknot) so couldn't tell. What I will say is that his set was the worst of the entire day. The guy girl whatever he is just didn't seem to care and the crowd responded in kind with the biggest roar reserved for the smoke machine testing going on over on stage 2. Anyway, what does he care... he probably got a couple of million just for showing up.

Borknagar - Urd (phenomenal cd) a track from said cd (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxPRXaTpICM). Never got into these guys, until now. With one of my favourite singers now onboard with the other 2 singers, makes a really awesome mix.
Tyr - The Lay of Thrym (I already own it, but this version has 2 great covers being Sabbath's I (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=goO-EJM7psA) and Rainbow's Stargazer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GLDT3LMr3A))

Ever since I was 12 years old I had to defend my love for heavy metal against those who say it's a less valid form of music. My answer now is that you either feel it or you don't. If metal doesn't give that overwhelming surge of power that make the hair stand up at the back of your neck, you might never get it, and you know what? That's okay, because judging by the 40,000 metalheads around me we're doing just fine without you.

I might refer you to his follow-up Docos:
Global Metal (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9vVZ6Zxrho)
Metal Evolution (11 Part TV Series) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnL7RayhPVk)

To give you an idea on my tastes, I've been listening to a lot of groove metal such as Lamb Of God.

One of the most unique bands is coming to Australia.

Apocalyptica (http://www.thehifi.com.au/gig/apocalyptica-fin-2012-08-31/)

They did a covers album of a bunch of Metallica songs, but the catch is, they play on 4 cellos. Truly unique band, and super psyched they are coming to Australia.

They'll announce more bands closer to the date but the way it looks now, it doesn't even stack-up to this years lineup IMO. It looks like they just blew their wad of cash on Metallica and Linkin Park. I'd rather pay for their individual shows because there would be more value in that i.e. a 3 hr set as opposed to 1.5 hrs.

Kinda annoying Bill Ward isn't part of the setup. May never know the whole exact story (no doubt Sharon Osbourne played her usual ridiculous part) but I wish the wise heads of Tony and Geezer could of done more to make sure he was in. The tour/album will of course be a success as this could be the last time to see any linup of Black Sabbath, but to get that close to having the original lineup.....and then not having it...lame.

I'll probably go though.

Yes, I know there's no way to know for absolute sure, hence why I specifically also mention Tony and Geezer. I'm also not one that cares much about behind the scenes stuff, but given the amount of things it's known she's been responsible for doing to bands/musicians, not to mention the stuff she's openly gloated about doing, of course people are going to think she's played some role in Bill's absence, I think it's naive to think she hasn't.
As a generalisation, Sharon Osbourne can get f*****.

Anyway, in other news, caught At The Gates in Sydney last week, excellent show.

Actually YES, Bill Ward & his legal team specifically requested that his image not be associated with this iteration of the line up - I really wanted to see him in the mix too but alas it wasn't to be.

And according to the discography, they didn't release anything after 'Never Say Die'.

Well, beyond the 2001 Reunion Live Tour album & DVD they didn't release anything since 'Never Say Die' - As said tour & media heavily incorporates Bill Ward, see the above.

The must have really pissed Bill Ward to have him do that.

Seems completely sensible to me; he's not participating so why allow for his image to be used for free?

What about albums like 'Heaven & Hell', 'Mob Rules', 'Dehumanizer'...

As of 'The Devil You Know', the Dio-iteration of the band was henceforth to be known as Heaven & Hell - This arose out of the court decision that found Ozzy & Tony owning equal-halved rights to the name Black Sabbath.

'Born Again', 'Headless Cross', etc...

These iterations having only Iommi (Occasionally Butler) as the sole original member in their line-ups, have been described by Iommi on a number of occasions to of never have been intended to be Black Sabbath albums; Purely due to the Record Label's management were they forcibly labelled as such so they're really only Black Sabbath albums in name only.

They are all Black Sabbath albums, and shouldn't be ignored just because Sharon Osbourne's husband wasn't involved.

Geeze, didn't see this coming...
This incredibly petty statement had me 2nd guess even replying to your post but I felt that it needs to be pointed out:

The website, this new album & its marketing are very clearly pointing & focusing on the Original Ozzy Osbourne fronted line-up and that in no way is any of it trying to lessen or discount the later line-up's efforts; it just so happens that those line-ups had nothing to do with this iteration & therefore make absolutely no sense in referencing, for the reasons I've already mentioned and likely many others.

Why it is that the 'Sharon Osbourne Lynch Mob' feel they need to make their presence & opinions felt every time someone mentions Ozzy Osbourne in a positive light, or express their adoration for the man, baffles me - go and rain on someone else's parade.

Holy sh!t that's bad news.

But you gotta admit that is one hardcore death. Especially for the guitarist of Slayer.

Do you guys feel that once a core member of a band or two passes/leaves that the band should change their name or remain the same? A good example is Adema, that's gone through so many changes in its team I don't think it should even be called Adema anymore.

And Breaking Benjamin, they're coming back but the lead singer Benajmin Burley fired/got rid of all his team and it's just him. I guess because the name of the band has his name on it it'll stay as it is - even though right now it's a one man band. I like the music but I gotta admit the lead singer has an ego alright.

I'm absolutely adoring this album, '13' sounds exactly like the modern classic I had imagined it'd be & I'm so very glad that this has been reflected in the success of it hitting the #1 spot in more than 50 countries including the US & UK!:D:cool:

Metal guy here too!

My claim to fame is meating Vinnie Paul in 2007 and getting his signature tattood on my arm. I got all emotional in front of everyone and im not embarrassed at all to admit it lol.

What do you guys think of the Soundwave lineup? My wife and i are pretty pissed that they put Slipknot and Lamb Of God on different days...and now apparently no headliners are doing sidewhows. So it looks like i have a tough decision to make. (Not that tough really, Faith No More and Fear Factory on Lamb Of Gods day so its pretty easy)

Other notable mentions from the night, In Malice's Wake was as brutal as I remember them. Taberah were surprisingly good. Darker Half have really come a long way since I first saw them around 9 years ago.

(I was going to use a real incantation but thought better of it lol)

When it rains it pours. Having not been to many gigs in the last couple of years due to lack of money and not many bands I was dying to see, to having so many to go to.

Saw Wintersun recently, one I thought I'd never see here. And Arcturus again. Now I'm going to Mayhem, Pain, and gotta buy tix for Venom Inc, and Amon Amarth and Sabaton. It's starting out like a great year for metal

Search for his name or Frog Leap Studios on YouTube. But beware: whenever I’ve done it I’ve ended up doing a deep dive.

He does a lot of metal versions of very unlikely songs - think top 40 pop, even songs like “Let It Go” from Frozen.

He’s a multi-instrumentalist and clearly talented, and his videos are genuinely funny, but I’m wondering what metal-heads think of his output. Does the subject matter lose him cred? I think his skills as a metal artist are great but how does his talent stack up against other metal musos?

One of my favourite folk metal bands Týr just released their new album Hel. My boxset arrived yesterday so now giving the cd a spin. It's already being hailed as contender for album of the year, and I have to agree.

I've heard 3 or 4 tracks from Tyr. The music of these Faroe Islanders would be perfect for the Vikings TV series.

Just finished watching Lords Of Chaos and of course it's not as good as the book (which I've read twice) but the film could've ended by at least pointing out the legacy of black metal (e.g. the global success of Dimmu Borgir) and Varg being driven out of Norway.

I'm still yet to watch it. Soon I will.

Speaking of which, I saw Emperor last night. What a show.

Agree. Especially at the end when they brought out the big screen visuals of Scandinavian forests, it added so much atmosphere that I wish they'd done that from the start.

Definitely highlights for me. There's alot to see. We'll see if Abbath is still alive after his last performance in Argentina lol. Lindemann just happened to be pure luck that they announced a tour whilst we'll be over there. Rage, I've been a fan of for a very long time, and flying to Vienna is the only shot we have whilst there too. We're making it happen.

Just read about THAT Abbath show and at least it's not as bad as Joe Cocker at Sunbury (I think). He was so wasted he got up on stage took a look at the audience and then turned back.

PS. I forgot to mention Lindemann as a stand out.:o

I seen a picture screenshot from one of the videos I believe, and he either looks really sad or pained. Part of me thinks something has happened in his personal life that tipped him over the edge. I know he has a kid with his ex which is Demonaz's sister. Hopefully I'm reading too much into it.

Lindemann was lucky. We'd booked a hotel in Berlin that night because we had no plans, so now we go to Munich instead to see them. And in a bizarre twist, Tenacious D is playing Berlin that night instead lol

I've been wanting to finish a certain big Marvel event with a bang and planned on buying Death Angel's Humanicide and Killswitch Engage's Atonement. Then I find out from Loudwire (the day before I purchased them) that these two bands have received Grammy nominations for Best Metal Performance. Speak of the Devil, huh?

Spooky lol

The Týr show in Canberra is still on sale, they brought it a day forward to 14th May. I spoke to Heri and he said was supposed to be announced on 2nd December. But Overdrive seems more to be focusing on promoting their closer upcoming gigs. I wanna see if there are more shows. And am planning on seeing them all.

Oh and I'll be catching Venom Inc this Sunday for their only Aussie show, and it's free heh

True, but his sloppy playing of probably one of my favourite Immortal songs, just horrible lol

Well I got home at 4am NYD and decided time to play my bass again but wouldn't you bloody well know it, it wouldn't register properly on my PlayStation. Turns out the 9 volt battery was dead and I had no way of getting a new one until later in the day. Downloaded another Dethklok pack, as well as a metal pack with Machine Head, Children of Bodom and Death. I don't know what possessed me to even try Crystal Mountain, my favourite Death track. Well out of my skill range after not playing bass for over 6 months. I'll have to sit there practicing alot on slower plays.

With the corona situation at the moment I found some metal songs on the net that are disease themed in the form of:
Epidemic by Slayer
Sickman by Alice in Chains
Down with the sickness by Disturbed

And here's two contributions of my own:

Crashing Around You by Machine Head
and
T-4 Strain by Henry Rollins and Goldie.
