Coles used to have that Fluff spread, but not any more... I was looking for it after coming back from BotCon, because I had a pie over there with that sort of sugary/marshmallow stuff on top (which was really delicious) and I wanted to make that sort of pie myself. Now I have to wait until I get back over there to have it again. :(
Did you buy that stuff from somewhere in Adelaide, or did you order them from somewhere? There's a place in Melbourne that sells American foods online, but there seems to be a lot of lolly kiosks in shopping centres these days that stock a lot of American snacks and foods.

Griff, you should be able to buy this stuff from IGA's or those neat little convenience stores that stock american sweets like Reese Pieces etc.
The strawberry is my favourite!

Are there other charcoal chicken places in Sydney that tastes close to the granville famous chicken place next to the train station? I tried to google and didn't find any place on the addresses listed there.
Inner west preferred? Blacktown and such?

Went to Blackebys at Tea Tree Plaza, saw the Strawberry Marshmallow Fluff for $10, bought 2 Twinkies and a couple of cereals - Cheerios Apple and Cinnamon and Captain Crunch. Tried twinkies for the first time, they basically have the same ingredients as a vanilla sponge roll you can buy at your local supermarket for much cheaper but just has a different texture and is probably loaded with much more preservatives.

You should be able to. Problem with these import stores is that the stock will always vary at different places, I've been to this Blackebys about 5 times now and this was the only time they stocked twinkies. Means you just have to keep visiting these type of places constantly, or call constantly until they stock what you want. I plan on calling weekly to see if they eventually get Apple Jacks.

I imported some Halloween themed confectionery from America (from ebay), because the themed stuff (Easter, Christmas, Halloween) is only available for a couple months, and unless really popular, is never produced again. And since BotCon is always between "seasons", I can never try these while over there.
http://www.toycollectors.com.au/blog/a808.jpg
Caramel Apple Milky Way - a very subtle apple after-taste is the only unique thing with them, so aren't anything special.
Pumpkin Pie slice - an iconic American food is Pumpkin Pie, but is only around this time of year, so I never get to try it. Recipes online are varied, so I'm not sure if I'd end up getting it right. So when I was ordering confectionery items from this seller, I saw they had this packet mix available for Halloween and thought that at least it should turn out to be similar in taste to Pumpkin pie for me to know what it is all about (if it is a sweet pie or a savoury pie). I just haven't tried to make it yet (I was busy last weekend).
M&Ms Candy Corn - in America, candy corn is a popular sugar-based candy (like jelly beans). These were very sweet, sweeter than normal white chocolate.
M&Ms Pumpkin Spice - a bit misleading with the name, in that it isn't pumpkin flavour... it is supposed to be the spices from Pumpkin pie. As such, it tastes like fruit cake or plum pudding, with the musty after-taste you get from those rich christmas items.
I got a couple packs of each in the ebay listing, so took some to work and gave the rest away, as I didn't really like the "pumpkin" M&Ms, and couldn't eat too many of the sickly sweet Candy Corn ones.
Just thought I'd share, being Halloween today. :)

Did up the Pumpkin Pie last week. One pack I did and took to work, the other I shared with the other people at home.
As expected with a packet mix, it didn't take much time and effort. Just some butter, eggs and water between the two pouches (base and filling)....
http://www.toycollectors.com.au/blog/a820.jpg
The result was a very usual taste and texture.
The base is like gingerbread, while the filling has the texture of roasted pumpkin, and a subtle taste of pumpkin as well... with lots of spices.
It ended up tasting a lot like the M&Ms - the spices bit of the M&Ms.
http://www.toycollectors.com.au/blog/a821.jpg
I'll still try to find it in America though, as a fresh pie... but for now, I'm satisfied at knowing what this uniquely American dish is all about.

Does that pumpkin pie taste sweet?
griffin

Not the filling. The base was sweet, being Gingerbread... but the "pumpkin" filling was more "spiced", like a fruit mince pie filling or fruit cake.

Each holiday season, the American candy companies seem to try to outdo each other with limited flavours.
I've mentioned in the past about M&Ms having seasonal special flavours, well this Thanksgiving-Christmas season I've found the following unusual flavours...
M&Ms Gingerbread
M&Ms white peppermint (candy cane)
M&Ms cherry cordial flavour
M&Ms Holiday Mint flavour
Hershey Kisses - candy cane mint flavour
Hershey Kisses - cherry cordial flavour
Hershey Kisses - mint truffle flavour
Lindor dark Peppermint (candy cane)
Lindor White and milk snowman
Twix Gingerbread
Dove Peppermint Bark (?)
Ghirardelli Peppermint Bark (?)
Some of them I've purchased from this seller (http://www.ebay.com/sch/Food-Beverages-/14308/m.html?item=190958876677&ViewItem=&_ssn=iandtcompany&_sop=10), which isn't cheap when you factor in shipping, but worth it for anyone really really keen to try any of those limited edition flavours before they disappear.

Cheeseburger-crust pizza at Pizza Hut... Damn, my two favourite foods merged into one unhealthy mutant freak.
I wanna try it, but I've been avoiding junk food this year as my new year's resolution.
And now for something completely different...
Anyone else been noticing a number of sweet food items recently having the new flavour of "salted caramel"?
Ever since it started showing up in the various competition cooking shows in the last year or two, I've been seeing heaps of items at the grocery store since late last year. Woolies even had a selection of Christmas chocolates that had different types of salt with caramel-filled chocolates.
It's kinda like making a gourmet flavour available to the common folk, a bit like how sun-dried tomatoes suddenly showed up in everything in the 90s.
What's next? Truffles on the frozen microwave meals?

I tried it as well, and was similarly disappointed.
The "topping" part of the pizza is a lot smaller, and the meatball "cheeseburgers" had no flavour because there was no sauce under them (tomato paste or bbq sauce, from the rest of the pizza).
When I put bbq sauce with the "burgers", they weren't too bad... but not as awesome as I had hoped.

I never uploaded the photos from my cheeseburger lasagne.... so here are a couple of them.
I made this three years ago, in May 2011, and took most of it to work (I certainly wasn't going to eat all that saturated fat).
Starting with a box of 31 cheeseburgers (yes, they gave them to me in a box) and assorted other ingredients, there is no lasagne pasta - the bread fills that role.
http://www.toycollectors.com.au/blog/b810.jpg
I only ended up using 20 of the cheeseburgers, so had to throw out 11 of them... okay, maybe not. :p
In a custom made deep foil tray, I just built up layers like a real lasagne.
The layers starting from the bottom, up to the top...
- 6 cheeseburgers
- cooked bacon
- grilled onion
- mustard
- cooked mince meat in Romana pasta sauce
- grated mozzarella cheese
- 7 cheeseburgers
- cooked mince meat in tomato pesto
- salami slices
- bechamel sauce (the white sauce in lasagne)
- grilled onion
- grated mozzarella cheese
- 7 cheeseburgers
- cooked mince meat in smokey BBQ sauce
- cooked bacon
- onion rings
- grated mozzarella cheese
(everything had to be pre-cooked, as it only goes in the oven to melt the cheese... otherwise it would take hours to cook through)

How long have Froot Loops been without blue ones?
I saw them on special this week at woolies, and the box only has the other five colours now... but also promoting itself as only natural colours & flavours.
Looking online, I found that they were released in the UK with just 3 colours because they couldn't find natural colours for blue, yellow, red... so it appears that blue remains a food colour that has no natural source.
But what's the point... really?
What responsible parent (or toy collecting man-child) is going to buy Froot Loops just because it is now promoting itself as free from artificial colours and flavours.
That's like buying a cheeseburger purely for being a source of calcium, just because it has a slice of "cheese" in there.
Remove 90% of the sugar, and promote that. Then people might buy them as a "healthier" cereal option.
Or just stick the artificial colours back in there so that at least if we are going to gorge on something unhealthy, that we accept is already unhealthy, at least it looks and tastes great like it used to.
(I remember the last time I had froot loops, when it still had the blue ones, I would eat a couple bowls of it, and I guess I just don't digest blue colouring, as it would go straight through me... ;) )

Quit smoking just over 3 years ago (April 11th 2011) and to reward myself for all the money saved - about 6k annually , I get Chinese every Friday night. Quit smoking just over 3 years ago (April 11th 2011) and to reward myself for all the money saved - about 6k annually , I get Chinese every Friday night. I usually get the same thing every week - satay chicken (no veg or onion and extra meat), special fried rice, mini spring rolls, and a fried ice cream without topping, however I recently discovered prawn toast and I can't get enough!! It occupies my thoughts until Friday of each week so much so I can't think of anything else during the week. I need help :o Prawn toast FTW

Each Friday a few of the guys from the office and I do "Asian Friday" where we go out to an Asian restaurant (we have about 4 that we alternate between) and get a lunch special. It's the highlight of the weeks far as work goes. On the list is Thai, Cambodian, Chinese and Indian. And yes, there has been much heated debate about whether Indian qualifies as Asian or not. But they do a great lunch tali so we don't care:cool:

As widely available foods, not sure. Dunno if US gets Tim Tams, but we are sending a bunch over to a friend. They don't have Vegemite either though.

Shapes is a favourite of mine that originated here, and only recently is being exported to some other countries... but no America, and it is something I think the Americans would love.
TimTams were mentioned already, and I think that's because the Americans have Oreos dominating the "cream-filled" biscuit market to make it difficult for any real competition breaking into the market.
Slow-cooked "Kettle/Red Rock" chips aren't very common in America. Considering their appetite (figure of speech) for potato chips & corn snacks in America, that's one that surprises me every year over there (when you see how much they dominate out store shelves now, compared to regular potato chips and corn chips).
Burger Rings and Twisties appear to be fairly unique to Australia, due to the dominance of the American Frito/Lays chip company in most western markets. Some countries have Twisties, but in places like New Zealand, they only have the Cheese flavour. (that was a couple years ago, so could have changed since then)
I remember a few years ago at a Los Angeles "International Food Market" of imported, uniquely national foods, the Australian shelves were very bare of anything unique.

I was out by a year... it was in 2008 at a Cincinnatti Food Market, with an international section. This was their Australian shelf...
http://www.toycollectors.com.au/bc08/t15.jpg
Two shelves bare, and still the smallest section in the place.
It's a little blurry, but the ones you can make out are Milo, Vegemite, Fountain sauces, Bushells tea, Australian salt... the rest were brands that I didn't even know were Australian, or brands that are foreign so probably release them elsewhere as well.
No snack food though, but since many snack-foods only have about 3-months shelf-life, they wouldn't be risking importing and hoping they sell fast enough.

The channel that gave us all those red-neck and bogan shows, Channel 73 (7-Mate) is giving us two shows on TV in the next week, to expand the waistlines of our already obese society...
Chow Masters (http://www.travelchannel.com/tv-shows/chow-masters), and Man Finds Food (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man_Finds_Food) (by the guy who did Man Versus Food (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Richman_%28actor%29)) - both shows are about travelling America to find the biggest and unhealthiest foods.... and the commercials on TV in the last couple weeks will either sicken people or get their mouths watering.
(the MFF show might not be on for long though, as the American cable channel that was supposed to have screened it, has pulled it from its schedule before it started, but there are a few episodes already produced)
I haven't managed to get to any of the (American) places from MVF yet, so I probably shouldn't watch these shows to add to my list... :p

Coles came out with a lot of new ice-creams about a month ago (http://www.toycollectors.com.au/blog/c183.jpg), and those "Packed" ones have some unusual flavours, but very expensive.
I tried a couple when they were on sale a while back, and I think the Chippy one was one.
Their Coles branded ones are also very nice, and a lot cheaper.
Between those four new icecream ranges, the freezer section is starting to look like American grocery stores. (still a long way to go though, with their 50 odd flavours)

The popcorn one was indeed weird, and so was the peanut butter one was. My favourite is the Chocolate one, but didn't try the liquorice one, lemon meringue one or Banana split one.
Those "packed" ice-creams are half price this week at Coles.... so try some of them if you can (before Tuesday).
There are five varieties, and each one looks to have three textures - a flavoured icecream, a sauce or fudge, and a solid chew or crunch item scattered through it.

I would if I could... but for reasons unknown, Australia's 10th largest city doesn't have an airport, and the Illawarra Region (would be 7th largest city if counted as a "city" like the Sunshine Coast is) has an airport big enough to handle 737s, but doesn't have non-charter passenger flights from any of the airlines since 2008 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illawarra_Regional_Airport).
Wollongong has about 282,000 people, while the Illawarra region (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illawarra) has about 457,000 people, making it bigger than the capital cities of Canberra, Hobart and Darwin.
It is also close in size to the population of the Gold Coast, which is of similar distance to a capital city... and yet the Gold Coast has a very active airport, including international flights.
Cities that are SMALLER (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_in_Australia_by_population) that have regular flight services by one or more of Qantas, Virgin, Jetstar, Tiger, Qantaslink...
Hobart (216,000)

Cairns (143,000)
Darwin (132,000)
Toowoomba (110,000)

Albury-Wodonga (85,000)
Mackay (82,000)
Rockhampton (78,000)
Bundaberg (70,000)
Gladstone (44,000)
Hell, even Mudgee with a population under 10,000 has a regular passenger plane service, flying 3-6 times a day between there and Sydney.

I saw these at Coles yesterday, and does anyone else think that it is a company trying to make money off KFC's logo (font) and red/white stripe packaging?
It's an Australian company, and it's only Chicken products, that even has a bucket variety (at the bottom).
Surely this passes the test of "would an ordinary person think it is KFC products at a glance", to warrant some sort of legal action by by KFC. While I was there looking at the company info on the packaging, just about everyone walking past did a double-take, probably thinking that KFC were now available in grocery stores... before seeing that it was SFC instead.

Now presenting, the new Food area at Garden City (Brisbane).
Being a Westfield, it is similar to their other recently renovated centre at Carindale... in that it is brightly lit, except in the new food area (as if they don't want people seeing if there is anything wrong with their food).

Aside from the localised dark feel to that part of the shopping centre, this is the new "8 Street" Asian food alley, with 15 tiny food outlets. Sometime soon I'll look at having lunch there and sampling as many different outlets as I can. (sorry about the glare - it was taken with a Galaxy s4... so isn't good with dark or night photos)
http://www.toycollectors.com.au/blog/c222.jpg
Next to it is the fifth MOS Burger outlet in Australia, which is one of my favourite burger chains (behind Hungry Jacks/BK and Wendys).
http://www.toycollectors.com.au/blog/c223.jpg
Not cheap for their size, and a bit messy (must be eaten in the paper pouch), but very recommended for the sheer variety of burgers (including new lettuce wraps).

KFC's Double Down (https://kfc.com.au/menu/burgers/hash-brown-double/) - the low carb diet option has returned, but with extra carbs, by way of a hash-brown added between the chicken fillets.
And if you "need" even more calories, go for the zinger version (https://kfc.com.au/menu/burgers/hash-brown-double-zinger/), with 2,843kJ... a third of the recommended daily intake of kJ for an adult (about 8700kJ).
I wouldn't be surprised if it has hit the news again, like the last time, for the shock value of it's nutritional content... or lack of.
(I wonder if the next evolution of this burger is "the triple"...)

I had 2 Zinger Stacker Burgers in one day last week. That was a good day. The calories in those are terrible though. Interesting thing I figured out with them though. If you get it in a large meal (upsized) it's $12.95. So I got it in a box meal instead upsized, with a bit of chicken as the side. $11.70. Makes no sense. Went back and tried again, still $11.70.

Just when you thought Pizza Hut couldn't get more creative than their cheese stuffed crust, their hotdog stuffed crust, or their cheeseburger (meatball) crust pizzas, now they have Doritos corn chip encrusted pizza crust.
Yes, a pizza with corn chips sticking out of its crust like spines on an echidna.
I don't think it sounds very tasty, but probably looks interesting.
And KFC have their zinger pies back. They are nice, but expensive.

A freind slaughtered a goat and gave us half. I spend 4 1/2 hours roasting a leg-of-goat since it has to be done slow and with moisture. Wa good but very gamey. My wife made the leftovers into a shepherds pie, again good buy gamey. I can see why goat is not one of the most popular meats out there - i think it will be a few weeks before I use some of the diced stuff to make a curry.

I found an Indian place last year on the Sunshine Coast that had Goat on the menu, so I had to try it... and it was really nice and tender. I couldn't taste the Goat though with all the curry, but I liked it enough to have it again and recommend it (if it is cooked long enough).

Well we've had the wife's rellies here for an early Xmas for 4 days and my wife's brother in law is a dab hand with goat, so we did about a kilo of the diced goat as a modified Masala. One of the best curries I've ever had in my life! Cooked it for hours and when finally ready it was so succulent and tasty - the guy said that it was about the best goat meat he's ever worked with too so goes to show getting it straight from the farm pays off.
Simarly, my brother slaughtered a sheep for us and I got the butcher to leave one of the lamb leg roasts whole - so big it barely fit in the oven! But slow roasted it with some rosemary and garlic from our garden and by the end it was just falling off the bone - damn good!
Loving having all these contacts that grow and slaughter their own animals - I just trade them for copious amounts of the veges, herbs and fruit I grow and everyone wins. Nothing beats fresh produce ;)

In honour of the start of the repeats of Man Vs Food on Channel 73 tonight (showcasing super-sized foods), this was a super-sized burger chain I found in Toowoomba over Christmas that I wanted to mention.
It's unfortunate that they are still just based in Toowoomba (three stores, but all locally sourced meats and veges), but as much as I'd like to see them in places like Brisbane, I think I'd dread it, as they are VERY delicious.
The franchise is called Phatburgers, and they make burgers in three sizes... a regular "ladies" size, a large "man" size, and the one-off "Burghoffer" - a $22 burger, weighing in at almost a Kilo (mine was 812 grams), which is 2-3 times the size of a Whopper (or about four times the size of a Big Mac).
http://www.toycollectors.com.au/blog/c383.jpg
I was in Toowoomba from the 24th to 26th of December, and I didn't know about this franchise until I got there and saw the CBD store near the hotel I was staying at. Unfortunately, it was already closed for the long weekend, and had signage saying that said it wouldn't be open before I left... but did say that the Northern store was open on the 26th, so I decided to stop there on my way out of the city.
http://www.toycollectors.com.au/blog/c362.jpg
I grabbed a menu from that holder next to the door of the CBD store in the photo above, and I was just salivating at all the delicious and creative options (website here for the menu (http://www.phatburgers.com.au/)).
It was a long two days waiting for that chance... :p
So on the morning of the 26th, I leave the hotel and head for the Northern store. I knew that I wanted to see what the $22 burger was like, but I had to restrain myself on what else to buy. As much as I wanted to sample everything because it might be a while until I have another chance, I didn't want to be bringing home bags of burgers that would have to sit in the fridge for a few days until they are eaten (which wouldn't be as nice and fresh).
I couldn't decide on which two to buy with the big burger, so told the person in the store to make two of the more popular ones.
I ended up with these three...
- The Burghoffer ($22), a quarter kilo of garlic seasoned beef, grilled onions, tomato, lettuce, beetroot relish, lemon mayo, horseradish and BBQ sauce.
- Morning Glory ($14), 120gm of beef, bacon, egg, tomato, grilled onion, lettuce, BBQ sauce.
- Redneck ($15), thyme seasoned beef, crunchy bacon bits, egg, pineapple, tomato, beetroot relish, lettuce, BBQ sauce and lemon mayo.
(the two smaller ones ended up being very similar, with bacon, lettuce, tomato, egg and BBQ sauce on both... so I can't even remember which was which)
http://www.toycollectors.com.au/blog/c379.jpg
The $22 burger was massive, but the regular ones were bigger than Whoppers.
This was the Redneck burger.
http://www.toycollectors.com.au/blog/c380.jpg
This was the Morning Glory burger.
http://www.toycollectors.com.au/blog/c381.jpg
And the Burghoffer.
http://www.toycollectors.com.au/blog/c382.jpg
The plan was to take all three back home with me as I didn't want to be driving too full... and I wanted to weigh the Burghoffer, so I took those photos at the store, and decided to just take a bite of the two smaller ones to see what they were like fresh then pack them back up.
Unfortunately, I tried one of the smaller burgers first (can't remember which one), and it was just SO delicious, I couldn't stop. I sat there and ate the whole thing. :o
It was almost midday and I didn't have any breakfast yet, but I wasn't planning to eat as much yet.
I took the other two home and had the larger one mid-afternoon, and the remaining smaller one in the evening. (each with a bit of microwave reheating)
Despite a bit of fridge cooling and reheating, they were both just as delicious as if they were fresh.
So if anyone is visiting Toowoomba, they are very recommended. And if the franchise ends up venturing out of that city, I think they will be very popular.
(and if anyone is coming to Brisbane from Toowoomba... I'd be very keen to place an order if you are willing and able - I know they'd be a couple hours old, but they are THAT good. :o :D )

Cadbury are reducing the size of their chocolate blocks again (http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-02-03/cadbury-plan-to-cut-size-of-family-chocolate-block/6066180).
A couple years ago they quietly reduced it from 250gms to 200gms to avoid raising the price (inflation hits everything, so either the price rises or the size is reduced to maintain a price-point)... then they did a big promotional campaign to increase the size from 200gms to 220gms to make out it was a bonus increase.
Now they are dropping it back to the 200gms again to avoid raising the wholesale/retail price, but where is it going to stop?
At some point inflation must take over and products can't shrink any further.
At that point some Brands have been known to introduce a "new" larger size at a higher price that is the same size as what they used to release years ago, and phase out the "old" smaller size.
With Brands like Cadbury though, people are buying it because of the Brand not the price, so this will probably not make much difference to their sales. If people were buying chocolate because of price instead of taste, there are other brands including generics that are cheaper.
(the one good thing is that when it is a small reduction, it cuts a little junk and calories from the diet... but if it shrinks too much, people will buy a second and end up eating more junk)

Chips are the worst offender for that. Recently Twisties, Burger Rings and Cheetos all dropped their package sizes. Shapes too introduced a few new flavours in new packaging to pretend like it's premium, with something like 115g. The other day in IGA i saw Red Rock chips "on special" for $4.78. I think it was 165 or 175 grams... I think they were always that size but for that price they can stay on the shelf!

Another couple of WTF food items I've seen and tried.
Cadbury Vegemite Chocolate.
I saw this on the news a few weeks back and finally saw it in store last week.
With the latest fad being "Salted Caramel" everything, this actually isn't that bizarre, but I think the thought of Vegemite and Chocolate will put people off trying it or "blind tasting" it without prejudice.
I thought it tasted like Salted Caramel, with a bit of the familiar Vegemite taste in the background, so didn't find it repulsive... but I'm not a fan of the Salted Caramel fad or flavour, so didn't enjoy it enough to buy it again.
http://www.toycollectors.com.au/blog/c820.jpg
For something more disgusting, but just as WTF...
First it was cheese in the crust, then it was hotdogs, then cheeseburgers... and now we have the latest Pizza Hut Crust fusion - mini meat pies.
The mini-pies were terrible, like something you'd find as a generic brand, and needed more sauce than I had available to eat them.
Not recommended, unless you want to be able to say that you tried something as bizarre as this.

I tried the custom thing the other day but wasn't too pleased with my creation. I just wanted a simple Angus pattie with the Big Mac sauce and a few other things. But i chose the french style bun which overpowered the rest of the flavours completely :(

I did have a slight preference for HJs at the time, but I didn't reject one for the other.
In mid-2000, after coming home from BotCon feeling really bad from a last meal of McDonalds just before I hopped on the plane (I "sampled" several items on their menu that we don't have here and had to drink a lot of water to deal with the thirst of all the food/bread, so after almost 20 hours sitting in one spot on 3 planes, I had really bad water retention in the lower legs that took a week to go away), so I used it as an opportunity to see just how long I could go without that particular franchise (I had HJs to fall back on if I had burger cravings)... and 15 years later I haven't been back to buy any of their food because I'm too stubborn to break the record.
It's also a reason why I don't stuff myself before a longhaul flight anymore, and wear compression socks. The fluid retention was so bad that year that I could poke a finger into the side of my leg about half a centimetre, and the dimple would stay there like playdoh, which freaked me out enough to cut out my biggest source of junk food at the time.

I have to say, I find the extra you pay for the Create your own burger at Maccas is worth the money. I got a burger with the brioche bun, angus pattie, colby jack cheese, egg, lettuce, tomato, grilled onion and big mac sauce along with fries and drink for just under $15, which is less than what my local pub would sell a similar burger for. And the pub meal doesn't let you select your fillings and doesn't include a drink. As long as you can get over the perception that its Maccas, I think their create your own burger range is a good alternative. I also find the fries are fresher in the basket, because when I ate there last week with the minions in tow, their happy meal fries were noticeably limp compared to mine which were served in the basket. I swear i'm not gonna do Create again... i've done it 3 times now, each time more expensive than the last lol. I agree it's pretty good, but for someone that remembers when meals used to cost $5.95 (for large!)... it's really something for a 'special' occasion rather than every visit (like i've been doing).
The last burger i got was an absolute stonker though!
Baker's bun, Colby Jack, Parmesan & Swiss cheese (no extra cost!), 2 angus patties, crispy bacon, lettuce, red onion, big mac sauce and chilli jam sauce (no extra cost!).
I got it takeaway and it comes in fancy cardboard packaging, in 2 halves that you assemble yourself. I can confirm the chips are exactly the same though, they just come in a standard pocket if you get takeaway :o

I've also noticed when I've made my own burger I don't get the McGurgles in my stomach a couple of hours later like I normally do after Maccas. I really enjoy their burgers now. I used to eat Maccas about once every 3 months. Since I started creating my burger I have eaten there 3 times this month.

Tried the KFC taco the other day, and wasn't too impressed by it.
I really love the idea of it being a hard-shell taco inside a soft taco, for added elements of texture, but in the end it was just the contents of a KFC Twister in it.
I think the box was more surprising than the Taco.

(catching up on a few random things after the last couple weeks working on my BotCon adventure)
Last week I also saw that Woolies were trying to do pretzels... with emphasis on "trying", as I bought one to test out and it was terrible.
These were more like salty bagels than pretzels, which need to be roasted with oil or fried to give it a that texture you get on the crusts of deep-pan pizzas at Dominos or Pizza Hut.
These didn't even taste right either... even after I heated them up a bit to see if that helped. :(
http://www.toycollectors.com.au/blog/c868.jpg
A week later they stopped selling them.
Which is a shame, because pretzels are really popular in America (and I LOVE them - just ask Fatbot from the ones we had over in America), and a grocery chain like Woolies could be the sort of outlet to be able to master the 3-step process and roll it out nation-wide.

What store do you find that? I don't recall seeing it at Coles or Woolies.
Coles came out with a lot of new ice-creams about a month ago (http://www.toycollectors.com.au/blog/c183.jpg), and those "Packed" ones have some unusual flavours, but very expensive.
The "Packed" tubs are now down to $4 "everyday" from $9... at least at my nearest Coles... which isn't good, as they can be very addictive. :o

My nearby Woolies finally got in the regular (caramel) flavour Gaytime tubs, but not many of them. It was nice, but I would have preferred the Chocolate flavour, as I'm not that big with caramel.
Can't find the Gaytime tubs? Plenty of other new icecreams have shown up at Woolies in the last week, to catch up with Coles and all their "gourmet" icecream tubs.
Three $4 tubs to compete with seven $4 tubs at Coles.
A popcorn variety (similar to the Coles one I guess), a Nuts variety, and a Caramel variety that is noted as having a unique Australian flavour and having "mite" in the name... so maybe it has a vegemite element to it.
http://www.toycollectors.com.au/blog/c900.jpg
They also got in some more Ben & Jerry's varieties, which are an extra $2 more than the existing ones because these have a fudge core. I'm still waiting for them to go on sale so that I can try some, as I'm not paying $12-14 for something that is about AU$5 in America.
http://www.toycollectors.com.au/blog/c901.jpg
Of the non-tub variety of ice-cream, Connoisseur have five more unusual flavours - Peanut Butter with Canadian Maple, Montana Mint with cookies, Sicilian Blood Orange with chocolate, Almond with Himalayan Salted Chocolate, Mexican Chilli Chocolate with Churros. The names are way over-exaggerated... you could use just two words for most of them.
http://www.toycollectors.com.au/blog/c902.jpg
Some Aussie flavours from Peters...
http://www.toycollectors.com.au/blog/c899.jpg
...while Streets are going American with their flavours.

For the last 10-15 years of my American trips I've been fascinated and disturbed by all the Ice-cream flavours and breakfast cereals, so I have this subconscious interest in them when new ones show up here... and we seem to be closing in on them on the Ice-cream side of things.
I tried the two Drumstick flavours, and like the cookie dough one, but didn't like the lamington one.

I tried the "cara-mite" one out of curiosity, and just as I had suspected, it is vegemite flavoured, without actually having that Branded spread in the ingredients or that Brand noted on the packaging.
It's basically imitation vegemite with icecream.... as if there was enough demand for vegemite flavoured foods to need to imitate it to avoid paying licensing.

There are far better food joints around. KFC were last good in the 90's. Their chips were the best, the chicken was yummy. When you asked for extra seasoning, mate, you got extra seasoning. Now it's bland, soggy and you ask for extra seasoning, you're lucky they even put any on at all. Popcorn chicken was pretty good, but I tried some again a couple of months ago, didn't really taste like anything.
I go red rooster every Wednesday as my tuckshop day. :) Right next door to work, well, just have to cross Zillmere road, but close enough. :) The ripper is so good. Get a bacon and cheese, minus the cheese and it's chicken and bacon paradise. :) Plus the bread rolls they use are so good.

On tonight's episode of Ainsley Harriot's Street Food series on SBS (http://www.channel4.com/programmes/ainsley-harriotts-street-food/episode-guide), he was in Taiwan, trying out all sorts of weird and fascinating foods... and some things I wouldn't call food. :p
But he visited a restaurant that has me wanting to try out if I ever get the chance.... it's called "The Modern Toilet Restaurant", and it is toilet themed.
Before you say, ewww that's disgusting... yes, it is. But so funny when you look at photos. (https://www.google.com/search?q=taiwan+toilet+restaurant+wiki&safe=active&tbm=isch&imgil=bjUPHHGonPSNdM%253A%253BTLY98lJzII8CuM%253Bh ttp%25253A%25252F%25252Fsidedish.dmagazine.com%252 52F2013%25252F10%25252F18%25252Ffun-friday-fact-time-magic-restroom-cafe-serves-dishes-in-toilet-bowls%25252F&source=iu&pf=m&fir=bjUPHHGonPSNdM%253A%252CTLY98lJzII8CuM%252C_&biw=1366&bih=649&usg=__RKBSzxsM3ME4NDTZo7ZraEoVJHA%3D#safe=active&tbm=isch&q=taiwan+toilet+restaurant)
The seats are decorated toilets (which I would think have never been used), while many of the bowls used to serve the food in, are shaped like mini toilets, urinals and bathtubs.
The main meals look to get served in a mini toilet (https://ethnacookseverything.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/toi1.jpg), with a creepy looking brown bowl cover next to it that looks a little too poo-like.
The place is so bizarre that it is a tourist attraction.
When Ainsley got his main meal brought to him, he couldn't stop laughing at how disturbing it looked. The steaming curry in the mini toilet could have been a before or after image. :p
Reading a small wiki page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modern_Toilet_Restaurant), this is not a one-off restaurant... it's a chain of 12 in two countries so far, with plans for more in two more countries.

The story of me trying to eat ‘Australia’s Hottest Burger!’
Before I start the recount, here is a description of the burger:
The "TNT Burger" is the hottest 100% Australian made burger in the world ! We use sauces made by "The Chilli Factory" including the lastest "Scorpion Strike" which is made with the hottest chilli in the world - the Trinidad Scorpion Butch T,,we also use the famous "Turbo Supercharge" as well as "Devils Delirium" in our patty among with other special flavours ! The patty is 330gm infused with the above sauces, the bun is 200gm,the burger is topped with fresh chillis, 2 rashers of bacon, tomato, lettuce, onion& cheese and of course The Chilli Factory's award winning sauces! Many have tried with no luck and a sore ring im sure ! Only 14 people have successfully munched it down ! Those who have succeeded get their name on the "Wall of Flame" and receive a Chilli Factory stubbie holder and lanyard ! Now with the new hottest chilli in the world ("Trinidad Scorpion Butch T ) the burger will be at its hottest
Thursday
11.00am: Ring up and book the burger challenge the requisite 24-hours in advance. Informed that the burger will cost $15 because of the imported chili’s and they will not start cooking until I show up.
Friday
11.15am: Take 5 of my teenage boy students down to the venue so they can watch me eat it. Figure that I’m used to eating hot sauce pretty often and if it’s too hot I’ll just wolf it down fast. Got my drinks figured out too.
11.20am: They start to make the burger. I see how big the patty is and realize I won’t be wolfing this down fast – it’s very big! The boys and I are watching the chef at work with growing trepidation. We see the imported chili’s taken out, chopped up and put on (there’s a lot of them - I find out later from the chef that they are in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the hottest in the world!). See a lot of the sauces being poured on with ratings adorning the bottles like 12/10 hotness!
11.25am: The chefs wife comes out, informs me of the contest rules. There can be no drinking during the challenge (uh-oh!), I have to sit at this table in the middle of the place by myself so no one else gets any of the hot sauces on them by accident. I need to wear special gloves when eating it (holy crap! Now I’m getting worried!). They provide napkins and say only use one at a time to wipe my mouth (apparently my lips and skin will be burning) then discard so I don’t spread the juices and make it worse. They provide one of my students a cooled tea towel and say he will need to mop my forehead fairly often. They also say to keep the sauces/juices away from my eyes as I could end up in hospital if I get any in there.
11.30am: I sit down, somewhat nervous now and don the gloves. The students set themselves up at a respectful distance to watch and some film with their phones. The burger comes out (it is damn big!). I’m told I have two hours to eat it, most people that have managed it (only 14 out of the few hundred that have tried) take about an hour.
11.31am: I take my first bite. It’s hot, damn hot, but nothing I can’t handle. I decide to try and get it down fast so I start really hoeing in. Boys are laughing and encouraging me.
11.35am: Mouth and throat now on fire! Really want a drink. Starting to slow with my eating.
11.40am: Lips and skin around them now burning. Using napkins after each bite. Have broken out in the sweats – armpits saturated and forehead needing to be frequently mopped. Boys laughter has turned to unsure giggles.
11.45am: Starting to feel nauseous, eating slow. Needing a break after each bite with eyes closed and slow breathing. Chef comes out and tells boys not to make any noise and people often need peace at this part of the process.
11.50am: Taking a full minute break between each bite. Two-thirds of burger gone. Mouth and throat no longer on fire as they have gone none. Nausea has become quite intense. Really sweating hard.
11.55am: Students now silent except for one telling me he thinks I should stop. Chefs wife comes to check on me, tells me if I start to have chest pains I should stop.
12.00pm: Nausea now very intense. Feeling a very odd tingling sensation down both arms I have never felt before. Hands shaking, eyes closed, breathing heavily.
12.05pm: Having to chew each tiny mouthful about 50 times before I can swallow it. Throat numb and swollen. Even eating a tiny piece of onion makes me feel like I am going to vomit. Dead silence in the venue, everyone watching intently, no one cheering me on anymore, just a lot of worried faces.
12.10pm: Stomach now not only nauseous feeling definite pains. Tingling in my arms now very intense. Strong headache coming on. Skin ever redder than usual. I take a bite of the patty about the size of a mint. Realize that if I swallow it I will definitely vomit. Look at my plate, there is about a fifth of the burger to go. I realize that I’m going to lose the challenge – I just can’t do it! Take the piece of meat out of my mouth, put it on the table and admit defeat with a hung head.
12.11pm: Students all breathe a sigh of relief, I realize just how intense the atmosphere had gotten. Chefs wife brings me some fresh watermelon and a drink which I take gratefully. Chef comes out, we shake hands and I compliment him on his victory. We chat for about 5 minutes, turns out that the first time he tried the challenge he couldn’t do it either. I vow to come back next year and take another crack at it. I don’t get my name on the wall or the other prizes but he gives me a lanyard for getting so close. Chefs wife warns me that I should seriously kiss no one for the next 5 hours because the heat transfers and it could cause them pain.
12.15pm: Drive students back to school, I find a cool quiet bit of carpet in front of the air conditioner in the classroom and lie down. One of the students goes and gets me some pain killers from the First Aid cabinet. I count down the clock until the school day ends, trying not to vomit. Go home and spend the rest of the day with severe stomach pains coming and going. Drinking milk seems to help.
Saturday
3.10am: Wake up with stomach hurting and something definetly going wrong downstairs. Go to the toilet. What I can only assume is a form of viscous fire erupts from the lower part of me. Spend the next half hour on the toilet in intense pain and my bum feeling just as much on fire as my mouth had done 15 hours earlier.
3.40: Take pain killers and alka-seltzers and go back to bed, vowing not to go back next year and try again.

Sounds like you really gave it a serious crack. You are one crazy mo-fo.
I wouldn't go near that burger. I can't handle heat at all.

While highly amusing, you know that you can do serious, permanent damage from eating too much chilli? A worked with a guy years ago who gave himself stomach ulcers that severely limited what he could henceforth eat, forever.
