And he's got the visor! I'm expecting epic fight scenes from you Ray Park!

Paramount Pictures has released the first two photos of Ray Park as Snake Eyes in the Stephen Sommers-directed G.I. Joe, coming to theaters on August 7, 2009.

"He's the world's greatest ninja, but he's also next-generation. He's not afraid to use a sword one second, and a split-second later he's pulling out his Glock," Sommers told USA Today. "His chief nemesis is arguably the world's other great ninja, Storm Shadow. The two grew up together, were blood brothers and now are mortal enemies."

Sommers stressed that the movie is an origins story, so his challenge is to explain why the bad guy wears a metal mask, why Snake Eyes doesn't talk and other strange things kids took for granted. "For people who know nothing about it, it'll make sense," Sommers said. "And to people who love this stuff, it'll show where they all came from."

Adapted by Stuart Beattie, the action-adventure also stars Dennis Quaid, Channing Tatum, Sienna Miller, Rachel Nichols, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Said Taghmaoui, Marlon Wayans, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Arnold Vosloo and Christopher Eccleston.

The US flag on his shoulder looks really corny, but otherwise that's a neat costume :)

I don't think thats the US flag but rather the Arashikage Clan symbol (the ninja clan of which he is a member).

Kyle

I believe the said symbol is originally based on or inspired by one of the 64 "hexagram" symbols from the Chinese classic "I-Ching".

EDIT: Can't be the US flag... to many stripes.

Ah yes, so it is - the flare from the lighting made it look like it had white stripes too at a glance. ;p Although in the original GI Joe Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow had that hexagram tattooed onto their forearms.

I wonder who's playing Storm Shadow and I'd definitely like to see any pics. :) I'm personally a big fan of the first Cobra Commander with the metal visor (the one he wore in GI Joe The Movie) rather than the hooded or armoured ones.

Cobra Commander is going to be played by that kid from "3rd Rock from the Sun", ugh... hope he can pull it off. But CC isn't going to be the chief antagonist in the movie, Destro is. From what I heard, this movie will be a "rise of Cobra" of sorts, and CC will be best friends with the main character Duke.

I'm in the same camp, metal visor all the way! But chances are they'll go for traditional hooded.

Storm Shadow? Gonna be played by this guy : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee_Byung-hun

I've never been a fan of "Yo Joe" but David Willis over at Shortpacked is kinda bringing me over to the darkside.

I'm hoping there's a suprise appearance of Serpentor in this upcoming movie - I reckon I'd just plain go off. :D

Serpentor showing up would be like Rodimus Prime turning up in the first Transformers movie, also he has a a divided fanbase much like Rodimus Prime who shared the same voice actor.

It seems Destro will be the big villain and Cobra Commander will be in the shadows, I am ok with this as Destro is worthy, and CC was always protrayed as a clever manipulating overlord in the comic.

When it coms to preferances of Cobra Commanders outfit, I prefer his hood, the visor reminds me to much of the bumbling TV version. However it would be cool if he had the hood but donned the helmet for battle ala GI JOE issue #1.

I wonder if Cobra Commander is going to be a verbose orator like from the comics. Half the movie might be spent on his dialogue alone! :p

I imagine not, but would still prefer that to him constantly hisssssing, one or 2 hisess would be fine I think as a nod to the fans but not every second word. Still I do sometimes wonder if comic Cobra Commander was ever an english lecturer.

Does anyone know what the level of violence in this movie's gonna be like?

Because on one hand, you have a movie that's very much about conflict/war between two armies (GI Joe and COBRA) with a very strong military theme around it. But on the other hand I wonder if the producers are also wanting to include younger audiences/families which might mean toning down the violence.

The GI Joe cartoon was notorious for its really campy muted cartoon violence where characters shot lasers instead of bullets and nobody ever shot to kill! The Transformers cartoon also lacked fatalities but being robots they did take direct shots, got blown or torn to bits et al. Beast Wars was even worse as it did have fatalities - but again, since the characters are robots it doesn't classify as "death" :p (as far as censors are concerned anyway)

The Transformers movie had a lot of violence toward robots - again, robots being dismembered and killed, but since they're robots it doesn't count as "real" violence. :p But the movie did see one human being directly killed and other scenes of suggestive deaths (I doubt the people in that bus that got plowed in half by Bonecrusher could've survived) and that earnt the movie an M 15 rating.

So... what are we gonna see with G.I. Joe? A lot of "suggestive" violence or more direct depictions of violence?

As an adult I want to see more honest violence being shown. And obviously it wouldn't effect me personally if the movie was rated R18. I think that having more watered down suggestive violence might make the movie seem less mature to me.

I'm sure that Hasbro are planning on making a toy line to accompany this movie so... yeah, the depiction of violence is one thing that I'll be taking note of in this movie.

Also - they should seriously do a first person shooter GI Joe game (they should also do a decent multiplayer TF game too)!! :D

Does anyone know what the level of violence in this movie's gonna be like?

It's a movie based on toys, therefore to make it kid friendly (and sell more toys) I'd say its going to be at most rated PG13.
So no hardcore rambo style violence methinks.

I'm just gonna bump this old thread.

I've seen the pics of snake eyes and the partial synopsis on wiki. I know I'm foretelling but IMO;

I hope this movie pulls it off. I'm all up for Ray Park as snake eyes, Arnold Vosloo as zartan and Michael Eccleston as destro, but I'm yet to be convinced on storm shadows actor.

Also:

That actor from 3rd rock from the sun better do a good job portraying cobra commander. Wasn't expecting someone like him to portray a grandiose villain.

Channing tatum and Sienna miller:eek:. Hope they pull it off as well.

Rest of the cast though, seems alright.

All in all, I think this film will be similar to X-men (God forbid though it turns out like Van Dammes Street Fighter).

What do you people think?

Are you talking about John Lithgow? He did was a pretty good grandiose villain as Farquaad in Shrek. :)

Who knows, movie toys when the movie is out. None have even been announced yet.

As for the 25th Anniversary Gi joes, don't hold you breath, we in Australia generaly get shafted when it comes to Joe toys. If you really want them I'd say get them online.

Just how big is Heavy Duty's gun!?

Christopher Eccleston is supposed to be Destro? WTH

At first I thought "How is Sienna Miller gonna pull off The Baroness?" but that pic just erased all my concerns. :D

Heavy Duty's gun was slightly bigger than that in the original toy actualy. Recent versions had the Gattling Gun.

As for Cristopher Eccleston, Contrary to poular belief Destro is Scotish so it might work, I'll wait and see I guess. He does kinda look like Destro minus his usual suit.

Yes this is Destro

Breaker, Baroness, and Heavy Duty all look awesome.

Hawk looks a lot like Flint though.

And Stormshadow has the right mask, but I dunno about the rest, is that his formal ninja outfit maybe.

I like how both the ladies are looking. :p

I think Storm Shadow's new look is probably influenced by some of Devil's Due comics. I remember seeing him in white trench coat in one of their comics.

I hope this movie doesnt disappoint.

I'm not a fan of the "black uniform" thingie going on. Reminds me of X-men (Didn't like the black leather/rubber thing on that trilogy as well, they could've made the costumes colored but matte dark colors imo). The black costumes for these group hero movies is bad, the costumes are supposed to differentiate the characters not collectively marginalize them into some sort of batman tactical team.

I hope Sienna Miller does a good job.

If destro doesn't show his silver head, this movie sucks big time.

Storm shadow kinda reminds me of 2 things; a white Magneto in the X-men film and... if that's his formal outfit it sucks (fashionwise), it looks like "boyband wear" in their cheesy pop videos (think westlife wore some similar outfit same with the backstreet boys). If that's his actual outfit for the whole movie it sucks x10.

I guess you all missed the part in the link that Gamblor916 gave:

Continuing a tradition started by the first masked Destro, he will even sell to both sides of the same war.

How that fits into the gijoe universe, I dunno as I know very little/practically nothing about the gi joe storyline/history. I was only interested in the cool looking military type toys as a kid.

Same here :). I can remember a Maltese Family who we were friends with had a son who was my age who had Joes in the late 80's. At that age, they were so cool! :D

Then I forgot about Joes for the next 17 odd years (You can blame Hasbro for that) but when I stumbled across http://www.shortpacked.com/ It rekindled the Joe interest in me :D. So I watched the Joe movie on Youtube & news/pics of the upcoming Live-Action Joe movie has re-ignited my spark again :).

are you referring to the mask? Doesn't really imply or state anything about him wearing a mask. It just says he's continuing the tradition of the masked destro's arms dealings which may or may not produce the silver mask. We'll wait and see.

Btw, that link Gamblor1 gave out, theres a comment a chick gives out there stating that the uniforms matched the ddp comics. It doesn't. It just looks 'all black' but its still colored in darker tones. She even went so far as to state why use spandex???!! eh??!!

Yes, which could explain his maskless-ness. But I expect some corn at the end type thing that he'll have a mask put on. :)
