View Full Version : Second Melbourne Takara Classics Order

Hey folks,

As discussed at the recent Melbourne meet, there seems to be enough demand to facilitate another group order for Takara Classics.

Chime in if you're interested. List so far:

Optimus Prime: jaydisc

Goro, you can see what we paid in the last order here:

http://www.otca.com.au/boards/showpost.php?p=12890&postcount=41

Of course, exchange rate and shipping will differ slightly, but the last order worked out to be about $41 for a Voyager, and $24 for a Deluxe.

25th March 2008, 05:06 PM
Hey Bread,

I think we might keep it simple and stick to just Classics as it's much easier to distribute the shipping costs fairly and appropriately. If you're considering ordering other things, it might be best for you to place a separate order. Since you would be ordering a few things, you'd get your own savings.

okay , removed the non-classics , my wants are in my post above.
Jaydisc what date will the order occur? (so i can budget :p)

jaydisc
25th March 2008, 05:30 PM
Optimus: Jaydisc & Paul
Grimlock: Demonac, Autobreadticon, Goro
Starscream: Demonac, TheDirtyDigger, Autobreadticon
Megatron: Autobreadticon

Not sure about the order date Bread. I'm probably happen to leave this up for another few days and based upon the responses, we'll take it from there. Unlike the last order, I'm probably not in a position to front it as I did then, so there would be some pre-collection of funds.

I've been dumping a lot of cash recently, and I know I'm not alone, so why doesn't everyone simply chime in with a time that'll suit them.

My set has arrived but I still am waiting to pick it up from my girlfriend's place. I'm going to inspect them one more time before making a final decision if I want a second set or a select few.

Do you guys reckon it's worth me putting in for a full set? Will shipping work out better that way? :o :)

Argh- What the heck- I'm down for a full set :D
I'm also trying to put a side order together for non-henkei stuff :)
Going to be putting together a premium barricade for sale complete with a Robot replicas head ( :D )

Isn't shipping cheaper with more?

To calculate shipping costs per figure, even if its not an exact classics:
[figure cost/ figure cost total] * shipping = shipping per figure.

Let me know if I should just go seperate because shipping isn't that bad with my combination of two voyagers and two premiums. works out to be about 15AUD shipping and $9.3AUD shipping for a voyager. Voyagers are 32AUD, leader 55.2AUD.

jaydisc
26th March 2008, 07:30 PM
OK, I did some research at robotkingdom to see if I could figure out their shipping formulas, and I'm pretty sure I've nailed it with 98% accuracy.

To ship to Australia will cost you $8.98 (hereafter referred to as $9). That's before you add any figures. That's just the base price. Then, prices for some of the common things we were discussing are:

Classics Voyager: 8
Classics Deluxe: 4
Movie Leader: 12
Movie Ultra: 12
Complete Classics Set: 28

The way to figure out the individual shipping of an item NOT including the base price is to simply get the difference of shipping 2 of that item versus just 1.

So, that means that the only benefit of a group order is to distribute the $9 base fee across as many people as possible. When realized to this level of detail, I think there is a threshold of dealing with too large an order and too much money that offsets the saving of 1 or 2 dollars.

Another thing to consider is how to collect the money. If the order is very large and there is not one person who can front it, that means some up front payments need to be made. But since we're dealing in USD, we don't really know exactly HOW much until AFTER the order has been paid, meaning that most of the back seat investors will either have to make a second payment or the purchaser will have to issue refunds after the final AUD amount has been determined.

A possible alternative is the idea of providing the purchaser with the correct amount in USD via PayPal. However, if the up front investor has a premium or business account (like many of us), PayPal grabs 2.4% of that. I've made a little calculator (http://lindalane.com/paypalcalculator) here to see how much extra the investor would have to pay so that the purchaser did not lose money.

Unfortunately, this post doesn't really provide any answers... just some information. Some food for thought. I don't think I want to be the purchaser/manager for a large order unless the investors are willing to pre-fund the purchases via USD PayPal including the fee. This of course further reduces the savings you get when spreading the $9. Alternatively, I would be happy fronting an order with a total of under $200 or being an investor and letting someone else be the purchaser.

26th March 2008, 08:06 PM
okay one request is that we try to make the order when the AUD is at a good rate,e.g is >91 USD cents. Recently its gone down. but it has peaked as much as above 0.93 USD

I recommend lcz128 if you are purchasing all 6 figures you should go to Robotkingdom and select the option to purchase 6 figures at once. You can make significant savings, compared to ordering with us.

Since we all kinda know Jaydisc, i think it would be better to give AUD converted from USD amount in person. I actually prefer this method. i dont mind visiting jaydisc because i can visit Northland .

using the exchange website xe.com is a good reference for E/X rates

Borgeman
26th March 2008, 11:06 PM
just a thought jay, but it may help:

get everyone to pay you $5 or $10 more than what the total cost (inc post) of their share of the order is in USD (eg if i buy US$30 i give u 35/40 AUD). that should cover the order. if you are a touch short you could cover it

since everyone will pick it up from you:

- if you collect a bit more, give them change with the toys
- if you collect a bit less, they will pay for the difference when they pick up the toys

i think it will be easier like that over trying to work out exact postages etc

Hey boys, I'm going solo here. I'm ordering another complete set myself plus a few other things I want from RK so it'll work out to be a lot just for me.

jaydisc
27th March 2008, 10:17 AM
LCZ, I think like STL if you are going to get more than a full set, your order might be big enough on its own.

I'm going to continue to offer a group order for Takara Classics managed by myself. To keep the order manageable, I'm going to stick to just Takara Classics. So, if you're Melbourne based (sorry, I don't really want to be stuff shipping this interstate) and you want a couple of Takara Classics, make yourself known and I'll strive to place the order the weekend of April 5-6, so make sure you can be financially liquid by then as well.

The order as it stands now:

Optimus: Jaydisc & Paul
Grimlock: Demonac, Autobreadticon, Goro
Starscream: Demonac, TheDirtyDigger, Autobreadticon
Megatron: Autobreadticon

I hope no one takes offense to this. If someone else is happy to manage a larger order with a greater range of items, I'm happy to hand over the reigns and sign on. I just don't want to manage that personally.

EDIT:

I did some math and here's what the order is looking like so far... a bit more expensive than the last, but still quite reasonable for Japanese figures:

whats the current exchange rate? 0.91...

jaydisc
27th March 2008, 11:22 AM
My source says .917, but you CANNOT use that to estimate purchases. A standard credit card charge you 2% of the converted amount, and PayPal charges you 2.5%. You should convert in the direction you are buying from and add the 2%.

So, if you were to take the rate you are mentioning and flip it, and then add 2.5%, it would be: 1 / .917 * 1.02 = 1.118

I use http://www.oanda.com/convert/classic and choose "Typical Credit Card Rate +2%" instead of the default "Interbank Rate".

27th March 2008, 07:22 PM
Any chance i can get in on this? cause i would like an astrotrain..

autobreadticon
27th March 2008, 07:35 PM
astrotrain is not out yet, should be available in around 2 months

jaydisc
28th March 2008, 12:08 AM
Yeah, Turtle Boy. No Astrotrain yet.

Bread, you're welcome to get an insurance quote, but I personally would prefer to not get insurance. RobotKingdom declares items as gifts typically but if you insure, there are customs declarations which make you eligible for duty, customs fees and GST. So, unless the rest of our party also wants insurance, I'm inclined to leave it off.

I've had two successful orders from robokingdom myself and believe many others here have had too.

OK everyone, keep your Robot Kingdom requests coming in. On Sunday, I will take the time to do the big mathematical computation and give everyone figures and we'll place this order on Monday.

It would be great if all interested parties can make one post after this one with their total desired list of goods. All Melbourne folk and any item are welcome. Please provide me URLs for each item so I can find them easily.

FYI, I will be adding one each of the two new Movie Ultras to my share of the order: Jetstorm (http://www.robotkingdom.com/services/eshop/main.php?action=details&CatType=Category&II=TFUCUJETSTORM&lang=us&CatID=1_37) and Wingblade (http://www.robotkingdom.com/services/eshop/main.php?action=details&CatType=Category&II=TFUCUWINGBLADE&lang=us&CatID=1_37)

So, using what shipping would have cost us individually I proportionately divide what it actually costs us. Notice the savings row to see how much you saved (but note that's in USD). Of course, the AUD total is estimated as of today's exchange rate.

I think we have to cap it here folks. We are almost busting the $1,000 in goods value as Unkie Iceburn is warning us about.

So, why doesn't everyone chime in as to when they can cough up, because as I'm sure you'll understand, I can't front this amount :D

I will accept Bank Deposit, Cash or PayPal, but you must cover the fees. I've made a handy calculator (http://lindalane.com/paypalcalculator) for you to work out what those are (note that if you use that, the receiving account type must be set to Premium).

LCZ i think you should do a seperate order, your amount already has huge savings alone.

jaydisc
2nd April 2008, 04:17 PM
Hey Bread, the savings in his column is how much he saves by going with the group.

This order has become exactly what I warned everyone of in the beginning when we started adding extra items. It's not fair at all that LCZ should be told he can't order what he wants when virtually everyone else is. He is as welcome as anyone else.

Now, I say we go ahead with this order as is. We're under the A$1,000 that incurs customs fees and RK has not told us we need to ship the items differently. That being said, let's finish up this order as is and consider it a lesson learned for all of us. If RK kicks back and says we gotta do it differently, we'll cancel the order and regroup. End of story.

Let's focus on when everyone can provide their money because if we do have to break up the order, let's do it based upon who is ready and who isn't.

think we have to hear griffin's quote in March Acquisition:

Okay, here's March stuff for me.
Several items actually arrived April 2nd, but should have been here 2 weeks ago. Robotkingdom wouldn't send half
my order until after I received the first half! I wasn't happy, and it isn't documented anywhere on their website. A
word of advice - don't order too much at one time from them, to make sure they don't split up the order into 2
boxes and make you wait weeks for your stuff.

sorry jaydisc i am out, i decided to order more henkei and sets of micromasters and other stuff. The order is quite big , but thank you for organising this for the us .

Hey Bread (and everyone else),

Iceburn and I have come up with a way to split this order right down the middle geographically so we don't have to fear duty, customs fees or complications with one big massive order.

If everyone consents, you will lose between $1 and $2 of savings, but you will make everyone happy :)

So, Paul and Digger will go in with Iceburn's "South" group and Goro, Bread and LCZ will go in with me in the "North" group. Here are the updated finances to reflect the difference. The original all-in totals are there and the 2nd set of totals below reflects the pricing with two separate group orders:

http://lindalane.com/temporary/tf/robotkingdom6.png

It's the last AUD Estimate field that reflects the amounts

That being said, if we're all cool, Bread, feel free to let me know what tidbits you want to add to the "North" order ;)

iceburn
4th April 2008, 10:28 AM
Paul and DD, you can object and stick on to jay's order if you wish.
I'm just helping to split the order so that we won't all be charged by customs (if something does happen)

Please give your consent and I should be able to make the order ASAP

I just placed an order with RK yesterday and we've been in contact a lot. the value of my lot is $520 odd. I cut back myself but they've been very nice and meticulous in contacting me about declared value, customs issues. They initiated contact and have exercised caution. Highly recommended. They're really looking after you.

Like back in an old thread about using credit card conversion v. paypal conversion, I've switched to credit card conversion. It's much cheaper. my cc charges 1.45% of the total value. Paypal cuts u at 2.5% so u can save 1.05% by using cc conversion.

When i paid via paypal, my final conversion worked out to be 0.9027 which isn't as great as 0.928 but still really good. bottom line, just don't trust paypal.

Oops I quoted incorrectly. My effective exchange rate was 0.9027 while Paypal was quoting 0.88 something and the actual exchange rate. I was making a loose comparison to the better exchange rates we've been enjoying.

Of course, George is still right. Just in case of confusion

OK, "North" order was placed and final figures are now in. This only of course applied to the first four columns, which is me, Demonac, Goro and LCZ. It's the final AUD Final row that has the figures

Just want to add that my order was posted out today and they contacted me to let me know it was sent via EMS! A free upgrade on Registered Air-Mail. For a fact, w/ everything I ordered, I'd be paying for $180 shipping to HK let alone EMS for less than $100. Great service. Great shipping. Love these guys.

Will grab my BTs from them too as i haven't pre-ordered at all.

Well, I'm sort of going through potential robotkingdom hell at the moment:

Hi,

thanks for your purchase.

But do you have any problem if we need to custom declare the full value in order to have full protection from insurance ?

Please confirm.
Ray
www.robotkingdom.com

Hi Ray,

That's fine. Thanks.

Jay

Thanks,

but any problem if we ship the order in 2 parcels.

we will ship one parcel first, then you receive it, and e-mail us, we ship the 2rd parcel.

It's it OK?

Please confirm.

Thanks,
Ray

Hi,

This is a problem. Can you explain why this is necessary?

Thanks,

Jay

That was all last night. I haven't received a reply to that last one. I sent this this morning:

Hi Ray,

This will now by my third order with Robot Kingdom. I really don't want to face the delay of two separate orders. Why can't this simply be shipped as is? I would be happy to call you to discuss this if that would be easier.

Thank you,

Jay

I have faith, based on my own and others' experiences. I'll keep y'all posted

BAM!

Another satisfied customer!!! Here's the response I just got:

Hi Jay,

because the parcel size is too big, we can not ship it by 1 airmail parcel. So we want to ship by 2 parcel.

But now, we figure up the weight and the shipping cost, we can upgrape it to be a EMS shipment, and it is no limit for the size, so we can ship it by 1 EMS shipment, and you no need to pay any extra shipping cost.

And we will ship to order today, it usually takes 5 days to arrive.

Thanks for your purchase.
