So how'd the rest of you go?

We turned off everything electrical in our house except for the fridges, telephone and fish tank filter.

We spent the hour playing chess. Took a photo but I accidentally deleted it! GYAAAARGH! Anyway, here are the photos that survived.

And no, that's not a beeswax candle. I looked through three different shops for candles and only one stocked them, and none of them were labelled as beeswax candles. :(

Lights on as usual.

I'm not ignorant to the facts. :)

Turned off most of the stuff same as Gok but maintained access to the outside world though Laptop and similar devices :p

Let's keep in mind that this is every bit as important from a symbolic point of view as any other.

Was cooking/eating dinner during part of that hour, but I'm leaving the lights off the rest of the night otherwise.

Turned the lights off (at the wifes request) but I still had the TV on.

did it again this year, left the fridge on and went for a walk

last year i rode around on my bike shouting at houses that had lights on, some badman threw a lighter at me, jerkwad was killing my planet

They should make it mandatory and shut down the grid, old and disadvantaged people could be shunted off to community halls, hey it encourages community spirit from like the 50's when people tipped their hats- at the halls they could be educated into saving water and being less like jerks

Had the lights off, but not my choice, the gf has been fooled into all this global warming crap, I'm all for reducing energy consumption, but not for the reasons Earth Hour was created for.

Well let her know the truth on how coal fired power plants work then and why this was a waste of time. Knowledge is power. The key to lowering emissions lays down the lazy and even xenophobic ignorant paths.

You also might want to brush up on some of the perks of living in the 21st century, that being the technological achievement of artifical light. ;) I for one am not regressing back to an era of pre-electricity because some greenies with an $ agenda $ are spreading lies.

I was in Melbourne last night and not that many lights seemed to be off. I felt sorry for some of the workers in the South Gate food court because they were all standing around with no customers because they all closed in the minimal lighting.

Well my brother is convinced we will all be wiped out by a meteor in 2023. So he didn't even bother.

Paul, the Victorian Government got behind it, but the City of Melbourne didn't actually sign up to it.

so tv stations are going to go blank for an hour? we cannot afford to shut down power for 1 hour, what if aliens finally respond to one of your transmittions?

GoktimusPrime
30th March 2008, 09:21 PM
1/ TV stations aren't part of the SETI programme (http://www.seti.org/). :p

2/ The entire globe isn't shutting down at the same time - even if we had full international cooperation, it's between the hours of 20:00-21:00, which varies according to which time zone you're in. So only one time zone would be shut down at any one time.

3/ If an alien species were really determined to make contact then I'm sure that they would be transmitting for more than just 1 hour!

but what if an hour in our time is like the equivalent of say 30 hours in alien time......

SETI's been running for 48 years now... if aliens aren't willing to make a similar effort then they can go phone off back home. :p

Lessee, I went to work and the wife who was at home watched TV and left the light on. We only usually have 1 light on in the whole house. It's one of those energy saving jobbies too! Damned if I am gonna sit in the dark for that bugger all amount of power.

I thought the whole idea was a farce.

None actually. He used to work in a lab and a co-worker showed him some study he found somewhere. He is seriously convinced it's going to happen. So much so he now works in a service station about 25hrs a week so he can enjoy the rest of his life instead of being stuck in some lab working all night.

Actually it's not a meteor at that time, by then we should be in an ice age due to the lack of solar activity, which is happening right now. Climate change is cosmically caused and is a cycle.

Sure it's good to reduce the amount of particles in the air for our own good, but we're not changing anything weather system/cycle wise.

but what if an hour in our time is like the equivalent of say 30 hours in alien time......

They may have differently calibrated clocks, that's it. The dimension of time is a constant. The only thing that can "change" time is gravity and speed.

Well according to these people:

http://africa.reuters.com/odd/news/usnL30158979.html

The end of the world is supposed to happen late April or May.

Too bad that the end of the world will be in 2023. I may be too old to go all Mad Max at age 43.

Reducing pollution is always good - and aside from that, reducing your power usage also cuts down your power bills and saves money. Money that can be spent on buying more Transformers! :D

Yes, for our breathing enjoyment. ;)

And yes, With our current coal fired solutions, cutting our usage is all that's mostly good for, our wallets only. But we have energy saver flouros, so that helps our bills even more. :D

Now to get onto LED lighting that throws out a decent diffusion........ 1-2 watts? Yes please.

Strangely enough the Russian cult are not the only ones who think the world will end this May:

http://the-end.com/

This website is about a self proclaimed 'Prophet' who claims that WWIII will begin in May with the begiining of the destruction of the USA and the UK.

What I find fascinating about this guy is that he doesn't he is not asking for money like most of these people do but offers his 'visions' freely which makes me think that he may genuinly believe what he says. I also heard a long interview with him and he doesn't sound like your typical religious nut job but comes off as very educated and well spoken. When he speaks, he is trully convinced on what he is saying.

So, the end of the world is this May. Let's go nuts!! :D

MV75
31st March 2008, 03:59 PM
Anyone can phophtise that it's the end of the USA while watching the stock markets for the latest years. :D

Funny how that site is (c) 2008. :D

The horsemen will ride strong in about 3 years from now, 2011. But it's not the end of the world. Great evil will attempt to insert itself even further into our world, yes, but it's not the end. The world will end when our sun goes supernova.

I don't believe anything these so called 'prophets' say but I have always found it fascinating to hear them, particularly those who actually believe what they say.

Its too easy to spot the ones doing it purely to profit in some form or another as their prophecies are very formulaic but the ones who genuinly believe in what they say can be very interesting to listen to as what they say is somewhat clever and out of the box.
