Sweet :D

His bot mode looking good even if the trailer transformation is more predictable than I would have liked.

I like it but it does seem like a rehashed design from G1 like MP Grimlock.

Now, I seriously doubt that the robot mode is as large as MP1 or even MP Starscream otherwise the whole set including the trailer would be gigantic. I know that MP4 has a very large trailer but that was then and recently Takara-Tomy seems to prefer smaller sizes for high end toys.

I suspect that in robot mode, Rodimus would just be a tall Voyager or a short Ultra. I hope I am wrong otherwise he would probably fit better with Classics than MP :)

Well if you want a G1 homage it is going to be simplistic and similar to the original as there is only so many things you can do with a rectangular box. I thought the idea of these MP's was to take the original expand and improve on it? I like it and would be surprised if it isn't close to the same size as MP-01 Prime;):)

If it ends up the same size as MP-01 or even MP Starscream/Grimlock that would fantastic!

If his size turns out to be scaled better with Classics, I think that I would prefer this than the Protector set (sorry Kyle :( ). But if it is the same size as Grimlock or MP Starscream then it will be within scale with MPs and displayed among them while I get the Protector set for Classics :)

The robot looks nice, but the trailer looks like an upsized version of the G1 toy. Not what I would expect from "Masterpiece." :/ I suppose you could say the same thing with MP Convoy's trailer too... but of course, I skipped that toy. :p But I do think Convoy's trailer was an improvement, like with the trailer doors.

Of course the difference here is that Rodimus Convoy _needs_ his trailer to go to alt mode. But I guess making the trailer simpler means they can invest more money on the robot, which makes sense. So here's hoping the robot component is good. :)

I don't think that the robot is that complex. To me it looks as if it has a similar transformation sequence to the G1 toy but somewhat improved like MP Grimlock.

They always do that when a new toy is revealed or rumoured, just to get the early/desperate buyers who want to be sure to get one. Apparently it is even listed as being an estimated price, so they don't even have any official details, they are just guessing to secure customers before other online stores.

Well I wouldn't think that it would hold anything less than a 3 3/4" figure, say like G.I.Joe action figures unless you know of smaller stands for smaller figures:confused:

I'll await more photos.

Going for it is that it doesn't look that big, which is a good thing to me. What we can see of the robot mode looks nice aswell.

Going against it is that the car mode looks very snub nosed.

MV75
30th July 2010, 04:46 PM
Yea, I'm not really feeling this one. Pass

I've never liked rodimus prime. I've always preferred hotrod. Rodimus P has always seemed too tall and lanky for my tastes. I'd like a mp hotrod any day over this.

But, if they're doing this, then galvatron should be next.

I also don't mind the way the line is going. I like the g1 style and conversions while adding limb articulation. Just a shame it has to be the mp line that's doing this and not generations.

Even if it can't transform into regular Hot Rod with some minor tweaks, I reckon that robot is damn near close enough as it is.

You're right that it probably is a wheel, but perhaps it's just to enable him to roll along without the trailer, like the ones on the front of the original Rodimus Prime's shins. I think it will transform into something independent like that, but that it might not be quite Hot Rodish enough for Hot Rod purists. Personally, I already think this is one of the two best Masterpieces ever (by a huge margin over the rest of the field).

Some hints of Hot Rod hidden in there from TFW:

Panels on his back being large enough to cover a much larger area than what the cab needs
Open area between face and helmet, hinge on back of helmet at base of head.
Wheels visible on the backs of his legs, but all four of the trailer's wheels remaining on the trailer.
One of Hot Rod's guns is visible inside the larger rifle, as what appears to be a seperate piece.
Robot mode hood is not the same as the vehicle hood.
there's some suspicious bits hiding inside the panels on the back. round, like boosters or something? are those on any Hot Rod or Rodimus Prime character models?

Pretty good so far.

Oh god. It just hit me. that panel on the very back of the robot mode has the exact details and shape of Hot Rod's car mode's back. I'm looking at my G1 Hot Rod, and I see the same cut rectangle detailing on his roof near the spoiler, exactly where it is on the bot mode of the MP figure, near the spoiler. He's even got the exact same vent detailing under the spoiler as the G1 Hot Rod! The panel that that panel is on hinges up to fill out the rest of the car mode's roof, and then those booster-ish parts fold out to become the back of the car. That's exactly how it works. This has a hot rod mode.

And another person mentioned the transparent circles on the sides of his head could flip down a visor... seems plausible given the slight gap between head and helmet!

http://i26.tinypic.com/nysdc2.jpg
That thing on the right looks to be an accessories tray of some sort with a very matrix-shaped object on it!

Not really interested in this so it will be a pass for me. There are other G1 characters that I would like to see given the MP treatment e.g. Cyclonus, Galvatron, Arcee. OK, so the last one is reaching a bit, but I'd sooooo buy it.

The photo below shows this to be true - there is a heap of extra panelling that Rodimus doesn't need in vehicle mode. This would be used for the Hot Rod mode.
Definitely a 2-in-1 MP toy, which would be one way of making it more sellable (for a toy that won't see a redeco, like Megatron).

For me Masterpiece Rodimus Prime is looking OK but I'm not blown away yet. But I am liking the idea of him being able to also just be Hot Rod in car mode if you don't want to use the trailer. I guess it would be a tad bit too difficult to incorporate his trailer into the transformation like it was with Titanium Rodimus. It worked great for Titanium Rodimus but that figure had a much simpler design to a Masterpiece.

Thanks for the size comparison Kurdt.:) I was really hoping someone could do that since my MP Grimlock and G1 Rodimus prime are in storage.

I'm a touch disappointed he isn't the same size as MP Prime. I was hoping all the leader masterpieces would be in scale but I was always pretty confident he would at least be as tall as MP Grimlock/Screamer.

I congratulate Tak-Tom for not showing images of the Hot rod car mode. It adds a whole "more than meets the eye" feeling to this particular MP release. Its also prompted some exceptional discussion and sleuthing based on the prototype pics that are coming out. This sort of anticipation/scrutiny of all the prototype pics has whet my appetite for the toy to unbelievable levels!

If indeed the hot rod car mode is in there I will consider this an engineering masterpiece second only to MP megatron. To get a cartoon accurate robot mode with great proportions that transforms into a cartoon accurate car AND truck cab is a real achievement [having said that until we see the hot rod car mode we wont know if it looks cartoon accurate or not but the truck cab certainly looks fine]

I actually like his face. The long chin gives him a slightly older more "Prime" look.

There should be some interesting discussion going on over at TFW2005 after the new pic came out....

I reckon you've hit the nail on the head Adzma, IMO the reason they've not gone for the 'Leader' size MP scale is because I reckon they want those 2 figures to "Stand above the rest" in collections around the world as tributes to the marvel of engineering they contain.

I agree that MP Rodimus is shaping up to be an awesome looking figure, how they've achieved such a "sexylicious" Bot mode from such an odd alt mode is incredible!

Yeeeah, I wouldn't put too much faith in the G1 cartoon or Marvel comic series for that matter. It's widely known that scale went right out the window with their designs :)
