Very impressive. This toy has 5 modes:
- Rodimus Prime
- Rodimus 'truck'
- Hot Rod
- Hot Rod sports car
- Battle station.
However it seems that the Hot Rod robot mode is just a face change and a bit of a stretch of legs but it is still cool and thoughtful they included it.

I'm with you on that. Don't care much for the character (he was a whinny beotch in season 3 of the cartoon), but this is the definition of 'Masterpiece'.
Fingers crossed he gets a local release like Grimlock (the word 'exclusive' is meaningless nowadays).

Hot rod mode makes this a buy.
Little things; hot rod car looks a tiny bit too long, and it looks like the car just plugs into the trailer for rodimus car mode. But that's ok with the off-sets of two heads and it being that many modes in one.
They could have made two differnt toys and tweaked them up a bit more to suit each character, but in a way it's good to have it both in one as it's just one purchase then. I'm sure people will buy two to have both at the same time, but to me they never existed at the same time, so it's a good acknowledgement from tak-tom on that.
Can't wait to see MP Galvatron.

Did you establish in your pic examination what the transformation would be for the trailer pulling mode? Because if it's anything like the original Rodimus it'll be like the front half of a car with the ass end of a robot hanging out (but covered by the trailer)
I ask because if it's the same with the MP mold and it's released locally you'd essentially lose an entire mode out of it (no trailer means you can't have the Rodimus mode, because it would look ridiculous)
Eazy D
30th August 2010, 02:01 AM
There was a lot of speculation on TFW2005 that the hot rod car mode actually goes nose-first into the trailer and the back wheels of the hot rod car are what form the cab wheels of the truck.
The truck cab mode is completely different to the car mode and some of the unpainted prototype pics show that the windshield section and hood of the truck cab are actually attached to the bottom of the trailer and would likely be pulled down over the rear section of the hot rod car.
That theory seems to hold up pretty well looking at the painted pics.
Its an ingenious if a little unconventional transformation.
I am in love with the toy. True engineering genius!!!!:D
It would be an added bit of coolness if the Rodimus Prime robot mode is slightly taller than Hot rod. It certainly looks that way in the pic but I can't see if the limbs elongate or not.

Indeed, you wouldn't have a Rodimus vehicle, but you would have Hotrod robot, hotrod vehicle and Rodimus robot for a lot less cash I bet.
If I were a stingey mega toy company, I would market it as a masterful Hotrod toy with bonus Rodimus Prime robot mode.:p;)

Eazy D pretty much sums it up! The Rodimus Prime cab is essentially 2 parts that flip out from under the trailer, locking over the back end & sides of the Hot Rod mode to give it a new frontend look.
Actually, both vehicles look like they might attract criticism for being 'shellformers', but that's not a concern of mine... for such beautiful looking modes (all of them!)

Here's a good pic of the legs extending (plus face swap + wing reposition). They've been a bit tricky with the photo zoom though, to make RP look bigger than he actually is. In reality i'd guess it's about .5-1cm increase in height.

Oh that does make sense.
With that in mind I wonder if FP/TFClub/iGear (or even Hasbro) will release like a molded chunk of plastic shaped like the rear end of Hot Rod roadster mode so you can have it in the Rodimus trailer and display the two together.

There was a picture in the previous thread that showed him standing next to the G1 Rodimus toy. Based on what we can tell he's roughly the same height as MP Grimlock, maybe a little shorter.

It's kind of bitter sweet news if true.
It will be cheaper and probably of decent quality given the track record of recent Hasbro MP releases. However it will still be 'incomplete'.
Since it's unlikely neither Hasbro nor TOMY would ever release the trailer by itself, the people who buy the Hasbro version would probably be reliant on a 3rd party to produce the trailer as it happened with MP-01.

It would make Hasbro's more attractive. People would be more willing (even if it is slightly) to get both because they both have things the other doesn't.
Hasbro's needs a selling point. Something to make it just as attractive as the Takara one

It would be pretty awesome, would be really cool if they have it up their sleeves and keeping a lid on it. Considering Prime and Megs came with extra stuff, maybe they will have something extra for Hot Rod? Who knows, but like you said, a 3rd party will most likely do Firebolt if HasTak don't.

I would prefer a smaller Targetmaster. Targetmasters are usualy ridiculously large and IMO look kinda terrible when attached in vehicle mode. If they actualy ever did an MP Targetmaster I'd prefer they modernise it and make the gun mode look better.

Yeah that's a good point. Proportionally though nightstick is really large compare to Cyclonus' arm - if you upscaled it, and given that Rodimus has a fist not a hole I don't think it would work

Thank my wife for translating these "MP-9 Designers Comments" posted today on the Takara Tomy website (http://www.takaratomy.co.jp/products/TF/products/2010/mp9.html)
Cybertron 2nd Commander Rodimus Convoy, which transforms into a futuristic truck will be at last released to celebrate the year 2010. The release of the flagship model of Rodimus Convoy has been anticipated for a long time because he is an unusual commander, not a typical historical Convoy commander.
I assume that there are many people who found it hard to understand the new 'concept' such as 'the round' body shape like an american comic hero and 'atypical(for robot heroes)' colours of maroon and orange. Also, the original toy was sold for about a half of the price of Convoy commander and so it was not a very convincing toy for a successor to the great Convoy. However, i'm sure there are many people who felt "something special" about Rodimus Convoy and other characters from "Transformers 2010" as a child.
Hot Rodimus was designed to imagine "hotrod" and a typical young american man and then transforms into a campervan to show his growth and new role. You can say that these profound intentions of the design can be understood as we grow up and have a greater vision/understanding of things.
24 years after. It's 2010 now and our world has not become the futuristic world that we imagined back then, but why don't you think about that feeling you felt then, and that future you thought of, as you take Masterpiece Rodimus Convoy which does not only transform, but also has grown up.

That's actually quite an interesting read Kurdt, please thank your wife for us. :D
I think I understand what the Designer was trying to put across and I do believe that Rodimus as a figure truly has grown up with this Masterpiece version of himself. ;):)
Still, really looking forward to the Takara version of this guy. :D

Read the original text. Your wife's Japanese is really good.
Camping Van was definitely a better translation than Camping Car Type.
I also find it odd that they talk about Hot Rodimus but mention Hot Rod so much. Doesn't confuse too much?
I have to say that MP Rodimus Convoy is looking pretty good about now.
EDIT: For those who care, words above the images of Rodimus Convoy translate as such...
'Rodimus Convoy, who first appeared in [Transformers The Movie], is the sudden evolution of the whole brave warrior Hot Rodimus when the energy of the Crystal of Knowledge, The Matrix, are released. In [Transformers 2010], after Convoy's death, the Cybertron Army work hard to regain Seibatron Sei.
In this Masterpiece, this evolution reappears in the ultimate 4 step transformation that makes it a reality. A Masterpiece that Transformer Fans worldwide have been waiting for, the Cybertron 2nd generation Supreme Commander, has awakened!

Your wife is Japanese. Lucky dog you. :)
My missus, who's Caucasian is currently in Japan teaching English but that being said, I met her in Uni through Japanese class, the only reason I understand any Japanese. Also... I watch lots of Japanese shows... without subs for practice.
Just tell your wife, トランスフォマーの大ニューズはたのむ。トランスレション本当にありがとうございました。

Pardon some corrections:
トランスフォマー ---> トランスフォーマー What you wrote was "Transfomers" rather than "Transformers"
トランスレション ---> there's no such word. I believe the word you're looking for is 翻訳 (ほんやく)
Perhaps a better way to phrase what you're trying to say may be: 「トランスフォーマーの大ニューズの翻訳は今までわざわざありがとうございました。本日から他のトランスフ ォーマーの新情報を翻訳してもらってよろしくお願いします。」 then insert a bowing at your desk emoticon like this m(__)m
(^_^)
For any other questions or comments about the Japanese language, or if you just want to practice communicating in Japanese, I invite you to use the Japanese Conversation thread (http://www.otca.com.au/boards/showthread.php?t=5673) :)

Yeah... I personally hate typing in Japanese... go fig.
And I respectfully disagree with the katakana form of Translation. I have seen it before and a Japanese friend assures me that while, yes, they don't use it often, they still do use it.
However, you have a good point, your sentence is a zillion times better than what I said initially... I was being lazy. ごめん。I do like your emotion-con though. :)
BTW, back on topic (which went out due to me, my bad), would people prefer the US version, without the trailer and with Firebolt (?) or the Takara version with the Winnebago (or Camping Car) accessories?
Personally, I prefer Rodimus Convoy cos without the trailer, what is the point of the ability to transform Hot Rod into Rodimus Prime?

For me? - Space Wagon all the way! :D
Yes Takara's Rodimus Convoy (Masterpiece Rodimus Prime) will cost more to acquire, but IMO it's most definitely worth it for the fact that the engineers have done so bloody well on it that they deserve that little bit extra. ;):)
I'm not surprised by Hasbro's move to issue a 'slimmed' release of the figure, MP-04 shelf-warmed in Targets here for quite a while and I doubt that Hasbro US/UK/AU would like to see a repeat of that. :(
It's unfortunate that the Western release of the figure would cost so very much, but I believe half the fun in obtaining a figure is the Hunt and there are plenty of online opportunities to it pick up. If that fails, then the Domestic release can be a fall-back plan.

gekisou: if you wanna go with the transliteration of "translation" then it should be written as トランスレーション :)

The Hasbro version comes with Firebolt? That's cool.
I don't mind not having the trailer... the problem is that even if Hasbro release the toy here, the local price will be so ridiculously expensive that it would make the TOMY version more worth it. The Hasbro version would be worth it if it were substantially cheaper than TOMY's... but I highly doubt that would happen.
MP Grimlock sold in Japan for 13650JPY, which for consumers paying in Japanese Yen is equivalent to $137. Even when converted to AUD it's $169, which is $4 dearer than the local price for Hasbro's MP Grimlock here. That's _not_ a substantial saving... Hasbro would need to make their version a lot cheaper than $165 to make it worth sacrificing importing the TOMY version.
Personally, I prefer Rodimus Convoy cos without the trailer, what is the point of the ability to transform Hot Rod into Rodimus Prime?
You could still play with the toy as Hot Rodimus in robot and car mode, and Rodimus Convoy in robot mode... just not Rodimus Convoy in Winnebago mode. And TBH the Winnebago mode is the car mode parked into the trailer.
It's not a horrific idea IF Hasbro made their version heaps cheaper. Which they won't. So... damnit... I should've imported this toy instead of trusting Hasbro. :(

Oh yeah... I apologize... I can speak it but ask me to write it and I start making all sorts of mistakes.

Hasbro has confirmed that their MP Rodimus (or whatever he gets named in the end) will come with his Targetmaster who I think was named Firebolt... right?

You are absolutely correct and really, I guess I could get both the TT and the Hasbro release to have the 'perfect' version of Rodimus (and no, I do NOT have the money to do that) but still, having the Winnebago in combat platform mode is really awesome. My G1 Rodimus is never without his 'combat platform'. :P
EDIT: BTW, my local TRU has Grimmy at 149AUD. Is he 169AUD in NSW?

Yes, Hot Rod's Nebulan partner was called Firebolt (except for the Marvel US comics which called him Sparks).

Haha, even if I had that money I wouldn't bother (I could spend that money on other Transformers). :) I think both versions have their pros and cons, so it's up to the individual which one s/he wants to buy. Though the TOMY version sounds like better value for money.
but still, having the Winnebago in combat platform mode is really awesome. My G1 Rodimus is never without his 'combat platform'. :P
Yeah... my G1 Rodimus... Rodimuses (I have an original and a reissue) have their combat platforms, so it doesn't bother me too much if the MP doesn't. It's really the price that bothers me. If Hasbro's MP Rodimus sold for $80 (which was about the price of MP Magnus in Australia) then I'd consider it worthwhile. Anything much beyond that and I'm gonna start feeling ripped.

How much is MP Rodimus Convoy selling for?
