TakaraTomy Tomica Hyper Rescue/Blue Police

So, anyone heard of this stuff?

Some of you may have heard of Tomica, which is one of the original Matchbox/Hot Wheel 3" metal car manufacturers. Great stuff. They just celebrated their 40th anniversary.

So, the Hyper stuff, which is Hyper Rescue and Hyper Blue Police are like larger vehicles that contain and integrate with the standard 3" vehicles. They also include little men (two big to fit into the 3"ers, but great to drive these larger vehicles). They're all basically transforming playsets. The level of functionality is amazing.

I stumbled upon them in Sogo, a Japanese department store I frequented in Hong Kong. I was blown away, and thought some of you might appreciate them too.

The level of integration between all the sets is amazing. They're all really modular. You might notice that each set has these convertible containers that all do something different. They're all completely interchangeable. Also, most can combine to form ridiculously large vehicles:

So anyone else heard of these? Got any? Want to know more?

i've seen them on sale at HLJ before, and they do look really fun but I don't like buying toys for my son, he can't take care of anything -.-

Unfortunately, at the ripe old age of 3, my son is the same. I want to buy more, but for me. :D

They look really cool, especially the police Lambo.

They also seem very familiar. Would they happen to be the same modular toys from late 80s/early 90s that could all connect into incredibly long monstrosities? I remember they joined by small black plugs about an inch wide with a male and female connection. Even the small vehicles could combine with the large ones.

Hmmm... not sure about that other toy. Would love to know what it is if you can figure it out. The vehicle to vehicle connector on these is virtually identical to the backpack connector on Classics Jetfire.

what you need to do with 3 year olds is give them hotwheels, teach them how to look after it. This will give them (and you) a chance to play with something you are passionate about. Once they master that, you can "loan" the tomica to them

I had a fiddle with this at the shops the other day. They're very chunky with solid connections and joints, but there's not a lot to them.

What i do want to pick up tho, is some of these things called Kamiwaza Wanda (カミワザ・ワンダ). They transform into card sized things (so they're a bit like TF cassettes) but they sell some kind of camera toy that reads or does something with them, haven't figured it out yet! What's cool is they can also transform into the same creature again, but with a different design. Apparently Kojin Ono who was a G1 designer is involved in making these! I remember Tomica stuff being flogged off for cheap at Dimmeys and Toyworlds a few years back here in Victoria however I think that was the Hypercity range (traditional cars, trains, buildings) and not so much robots and transforming vehicles. I wish that stuff would hit our locals!

These Tomica toys always give me a bit of a nostalgia boner as the design and aesthetics retain a lot of the creativity and gimmickry of toys in the 80's which is somewhat lost in the modern Takaratomy transformers designs which are optimised for lowering manufacturing cost (probably because the cost to design a true 'Transformer' which has heaps of parts, is already quite high).

Got White Hope toy this week from this series and it's awesome. Already ordered some add on bits that let you swap limbs like megazords etc.

I just ordered the two yellow mini vehicles today that also double as swappable limbs and a diff head.

Fyi best price for these is HLJ about half price other stores are selling for. I overpaid for white hope off eBay.

Who do they "rescue" exactly with a giant industrial CHAINSAW? The horror fan in me loves that, but the OCD safety part of me says "they better be jaws of life....kids show......right?"

Literally ordered those ones the day after white hope arrived in mail, as I was so impressed with him. He's the coolest medic-bot around. Sorry Ratchet, no offense intended. When you have a giant chainsaw attachment we can be friends again.

Yeah, it looks like the helicopter has a full set of arms and legs for White Hope, and the remaining Helicopter bit can take over White Hopes alt mode. I'm very tempted to get White Hope and the 'copter.

Awesome set. Like the ones in my first post, the gimmick are these shipping-container-like things. You can interchange them across the various sets, they all do something different. And yeah, the quality of all of my sets is very high. It's Tak Tom after all.

While we still have it all, my son lost interest, and I try to not maintain extra hobbies beyond Transformers and a bit of Lego. But yeah, the new, more mech/robot direction they've been steadily going towards is pretty exciting. It's pulling me back in…
