View Full Version : G1 Tanks - Mild Curiosity Rears It's Head

So Hardhead was my favourite of the regular Headmasters (although after getting Brainstorm I may have changed my mind). Warpath is hands down my favourite minibot. Guzzle is my favourite of the new Wreckers.
I never thought of myself as a massive tank fan - but it seems I do like 'em. So I was wondering - how many tanks are there in G1 toy form?
I had a think about the Autobots, and there's more than I expected. I'm only counting proper tanks - armoured vehicles with treads and a gun barrel - so the likes of Nosecone & Quickswitch don't count.
Autobots
Warpath
Hardhead
Guzzle
Omega Supreme - Yeah, I think of him as a rocket, but he is at least equal parts rocket and tank.
Grandslam
Slammer - even if he is a drone, he's got a name.
Perceptor - some may think his third mode is dodgy, but it has dedicated treads and wheels, and one hellova big cannon. I like it anyway :)
That's all I can think of.
- I don't care much for Micromasters, but if anyone wants to let me know if there are any tanks in the line, I'd be interested.
- I'm not too familiar with the pretender's alt modes, so maybe there are some tanks there, and I can't think of any Euro or Japanese tanks off the top of my head(Dai Atlas was a drill tank, wasn't he - same goes for the Rescue Force guy).
- And there're probably some Action Master partners that turn into tanks?
- Just G1 toys - I'm not counting comics (e.g. Grimlock)
Let me know if I missed any

I haven't really thought about the 'Cons much, but surely there should be a few, what with their fondness for military vehicles.
Megatron I'm not counting - he didn't get a tank mode 'til G2 I think?
Decepticons
Blitzwing
Brawl
Overlord
Skullgrin - doesn't really have treads - but he still qualifies as a tank
Bludgeon
Is that it? Seems like there must be many more I'm missing.

Decepticons
Brunt - He is an accessory of Trypticon who looks like a MASER Cannon but has treads.
Battletrap - I think half of him is a tank (he's a Duocon)
Quake - Double Targetmaster
Killbison - part of the Breastforce from Victory
Military Patrol - Bombshock is a tank.
Metrotank - If you count Slammer then I guess his repaint counts?
Autobots
Battle Patrol (Micromasters) - Both Sidetrack and Bigshot are tank-ish vehicles though Bigshot more than Sidetrack.
Roadfire - Powered Master from Zone is a futuristic tank... I guess.
That's all I can think of if you don't add G2.
Hope that helped.
EDIT: Got beaten to Quake by 1 minute. Man...

Quake's my favourite of the 1988 Targetmasters :)

I agree, but sticking strictly to Oilspill's definition of a "tank" (i.e. armoured vehicle with gun barrel + treads) then I don't think Bigshot counts.
So according to this thread's definition of "tank" others I would include are:
+ Magnificus (he even comes with a tank driver (Gamede)!)
+ AM Grimlock's Anti-Tank cannon
+ Countdown's mobile rocket base
+ Hot House's station-base
+ Grandus
+ Star Convoy
+ Omega Spreem
+ Sandstorm (Decepticon repaint of Brawl, not the Autobot Triplechanger)
+ Stalker
+ Vanguard
P.S.: Tank you for making this thread Oilspill! <badaboom TISH> :p ;) :p

Ahh excellent info guys!
Stalker (and maybe Countdown) I think of more as ballistic missile launchers.
But how the hell did I forget Quake, he's even standing on my desk at the moment. Doh.

...don'tcha just love how one of Quake's Nebulan partner guns is also the name of a kind of bread? ;) :p :D "Good on ya mum!"

You know?, based on a continuity perspective - wouldn't BW Rampage also fit into this?

The thread says G1 tanks, so that wouldn't count. Yeah, I know Beast Wars continues on from the same continuity as G1, but so does G2 and nobody's included any G2 tanks here either (e.g. Megatron, Archforce etc.). AFAIK the thread stipulates only G1. Another BW tank would also be Takotank and of course, Megastorm.
Other G1 tanks...
+ Impactor.
+ Flame. The evil Autobot scientist, not the Autobot Motorvator.
+ Emirate Xaaron. It has been explicitly stated that his alt mode is a "small combat tank", but whether or not it fits Oilspill's criteria of a "tank" (i.e. has treads or a gun barrel etc.) is unverifiable since Xaaron _never_ transformed!
+ Treds

Ah ok, fair enough - I just noticed that there wasn't any G2 tanks so that's a fair point. :)
Mind you, it is interesting seeing just how many G1 characters had a Tank/esque Alt Mode, guess that's only natural when you're from a robotic race trapped in an eternal war. ;)

in the early days of the war, there were many Cybertronians who transformed into pointed sticks. ;) :p

Don't forget Quickswitch, he does have the drill tank mode

GADEP. Also, Gutcruncher would have transformed into a tank if he'd stayed away from nucleon (as is doubly supported by his recent tank-homage as Sparkcrusher.)

He's a recolour of Universe Warpath. My Sparkcrusher is hiding somewhere in one of my toy boxes, so here's his Tfwiki link:

I was browsing some guy's ebay listings, and saw this. Micromaster Hot House's fire station (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Fire_station) turns into a tank.

2 problems I can see...
1: Not all the G1 tank Transformers listed here have toys. e.g. Impactor, Xaaron and Flame were characters created for G1 fiction but weren't based on toys, much like Elita-One, Devcon etc.
2: Among all the tank TFs listed here that do have toys, while as a community we easily own them all, I don't know if any of us individually own all of them. I have most of them, but I don't have toys like Overlord, Metrotank or Killbison (I have the Hasbro version of Killbison, but that figure doesn't have mounted guns so wouldn't qualify as a tank in this thread).
