Um... on your P-Plates maybe. The highest speed limit in Australia is 130 km/h. And speedometers go higher because many humans are fools who either a) Like the idea that a car can go really fast or b) actually do drive their car that fast.

So when the cops book you for doing 50kms over the limit (i.e 180kph) you cannot feign ignorance and claim your speedo only goes up to 130.

But within sydney, the M4 - goes to 100km/h. I guess I was just looking at sydney areas that I know.

It is time to take my life." Then he hears a gunshot. Instead of a suicide report, the cop files a homicide report. Why?

Because he was a clever cop - someone had rewound the cassette to the beginning of the recording.

I've done this at home. I am setup as the admin and running trend micro AV s/w. Through trend micro you can block any website by adding them to a list. To unblock them, you need to enter a p/w.

Hope that helps (more than my last suggestion :p)

A very good suggestion that I would recommend to those who don't consider themselves overly IT literate - not to degrade the suggestion at all though as it is a very effective one. :)
If you feel a little bit more game Bartrim, I'd suggest blocking Facebook's IP address in the router's firewall, it's a little more drastic and involving but I doubt he'd think to look there, mind you nobody else would be able to use Facebook either - which may or may not be a bad thing. ;)

HD TV channels are broadcasted with 5.1 surround sound whereas the SD channels are broadcasted in plain stereo.

Now if you've only got a 2 speaker/stereo speakered TV, then you'll find that the HD channels will have a lower audible volume because 3.1 out of the 5.1 audio channels aren't being produced
If you add a 5.1 surround sound speaker unit to your entertainment setup, or your TV is able to downmix 5.1 surround sound signals to stereo signals, you'll find that there wont be a difference at all. ;):D

I too have this problem as I only have a stereo TV. :(

good link.

personally I have gone for LED backlit LCD as the picture is supposed to also have a higher response time, therefore less ghosting in fast motion images.

have fun searching and when you find a model you like look for it on STATICICE.com.au so you can get a good price, even take those prices into JB to get a match.

What do I do with excess recyclable waste (cardboard backings), I bought a big order from the states and have so many excess packaging and none of it fits into my family's recycling bin. Any tips? Am I allowed to drop it off at a Recycling Facility that I'm willing to drive to?

GoktimusPrime
9th February 2012, 11:54 AM
Just fold it up and stick it in your garage until your recycling bin has space. Maybe dispose of a few boxes per fortnight. Heh, you should've seen what I was doing in 2005 when I decided to do a MASSIVE box purge. From 1997 until then I'd never thrown a TF box away and after eight years they were just wasting too much space. So I had this mountain of TF boxes sitting in the back of my driveway for months as I gradually turfed them out! Nearly a year later when I was moving out, I just took what was left to a waste management facility. :p Ho boy... that was hectic. Even now I have a small collection of TF boxes sitting in my garage (no space in my TF room)... and that's despite the fact that since 2005 I do chuck out most of my TF boxes - only keep the ones that I like. I just happen to like a lot of them (I can't bring myself to chuck out any of my eHobby TF boxes despite their generic design... weird, no?).

With a budget of $750 I'd be looking at grey imports, much of a muchness between Canon and Nikon these days, a lot of it is down to personal preference (I'm a Canon guy) and compatibility of lenses and accesories.

Some examples, these guys are in Aus:
Canon-550D (http://www.d-d-photographics.com.au/products/Canon-550D-Digital-SLR-Camera-Twin-Lens-Kit.html)
Nikon-D3200 (http://www.d-d-photographics.com.au/products/Nikon-D3200-Digital-SLR-Camera-with-AF%252dS-DX-NIKKOR-18%252d55mm-1%3A3.5%252d5.6G-VR-Lens.html)

And overseas, so need to take shipping into account:

Do you have a dedicated video card? If you've swapped in a new mobo with onboard graphics, plug in your monitor to that first as it would be the default output. If not, need more info on your setup.

I don't think they've stopped. Misery (1987) is an old one, as is The Dark Half (1989) - there's been many movie adaptations since then and still more to come. Here's a list you can check out (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_adaptations_of_works_by_Stephen_King). There's also a steady stream of new books recently published and in the works. Did the TV have a "digital ready" type sticker on it? I think they are supposed to now to be able to be sold. Maybe there's another set of channels/mode for digital? I know on TVs Ive used lately you have to select a different setting to see Analogue channels. If you are still having trouble I'd suggest returning it and getting your money back.

If it is, then it has HD Tuner.

You need to test the antenna/signal reception in your area. Maybe with a digital setup box?

If it doesn't get digital channels thru the box in your old TV or with the ALDI one, then you can't get digital channels. :(

You'll need a new antenna or a signal booster or both.

One for the computer peoples I guess.

I just bought some more ram for my little netbook, so it's now running 2gb ram with a 1.83ghz processor.

What exactly does the RAM do? I have been checking stuff out and managed to get a fair bit of extra speed by going through the 'services' and cutting useless background running things.(such as a program designed for touch screens, but it doesn't even have a touch screen) as well as cutting pretty much all of the programs that were booting p on startup.

It's zipping along rather nicely now and I notice that it seems to load up file browser images a lot quicker (say when looking at my pictures folder).

What else could I look at to get an idea of speed. And any tricks for smoother running of the processor?

griffin
17th April 2013, 12:43 AM
RAM is the amount of memory it can use at one time (to work with), as in, the more RAM, the more programs you can have running at the same time.
So you can have a big hard drive, and fast processing speed, but if you don't have a big RAM to go with those two elements, your computer won't be able to do much at one time... and probably even crash.
To get an idea of what RAM your computer is currently using up (including all the background elements that you aren't even aware of), go to the Task Manager (CTRL-ALT-DEL on Windows) and look on the "Processes" tab. It will list everything your computer is currently processing (if you sort by Memory, you can see what elements are being the biggest drain, and maybe even see programs running that you don't need or didn't realise you had).

Tetsuwan Convoy

Thanks, I think I get it now.

Apparently the biggest drain on my computer is Chrome, Skype, windows explorer and something to do with the desktop. Oddly, despite only have three Chrome tabs open, I have 6 processes running, apparently all to do with chrome. Hmmmm.

I have noticed that pages have been loading better and graphic intensive pages work better too, so it was worth the effort.

Good. I always try to deal with individuals who have a 99.5-100% feedback. I read their rwcent feedback thoroughly and try to determine what the main issue was in regards to receiving a neutral or negative response. If i'm satisfied that the issue isn't enough to deter me from my purchase, i proceed. Shipping wise, i always take the registered option.

Amazon.com allows payment through paypal. like everyone else they skim a few cents on the conversion rate, or you can pay in US$ and have conversion through paypal, or you can do the conversion at your bank.

as for international bank accounts I'm not sure. I can't remember off the top of my head if I used paypal or my australian visa debit last time I made a purchase with them.

I've only ever used a Samsung, first an S2 and now an S4.
I'm generally very happy, the S4 does have issues with managing a 64G SD card. it tends to drop it once a week or so.

Otherwise I'm pretty happy with it as a phone and smart device.

Anyone installed one of these (http://sockitz.com.au/) in their house? Is a great idea but at nearly $40 a pop + shipping I'd like some assurance that they are of decent quality.

I suppose it'd be fun to have one in your workstation.
It'd be woefully misplaced if it wasn't at desk level.

80,000 Km service - where to do it? the manufacturer service centre will charge me $800 for it. :(

Where do you recommend?

Saw this - http://www.fixedpricecarservice.com.au/ but no idea about the recommendations that came out. Roughly around $550.

I have a problem with my Internet. I'm hoping one of you can help cause I've got no idea.

The issue is that sometimes certain websites don't load. I don't get an error or anything it just acts like it can't find that server. This is intermittent, for example:

- Sometimes OTCA will load fine and TFW won't. Sometimes vice versa. 5 minutes later all will load fine or it will be others that refuse to load. The SDRO website refused to load for about 5 minutes today so that shows how random it can be.

- A lot of images won't load and this seems fairly consistent, especially on boards and images that are linked from photobucket accounts and whatnot

- It doesn't matter what device I use. In my house there are 2 laptops, 2 iPhones and an ipad and they all experience this issue when connected to my home wireless. When I switch to 3G on my phones the issue vanishes.

- I can no longer download comics from the Comixology app on the ipad, nor can I update apps on my iPhone. It just comes up with a download error.

That's all I can think of at the moment but I'm sure there are more issues. I have tried cycling power and restoring factory defaults on the modem. I have changed nothing recently (in fact before this issue it was about 6 months since I even logged into the modem). And the fact that it happens on all my devices says that it is either a modem problem or an ISP. I don't have easy access to another modem to test so I would basically have to buy another one.

Oh and google searches have been fruitless.

Help we OTCA-wan Kenobi. You're my only hope. :(

I've only ever had my Suby serviced at Subaru. some are more expensive than others, what does the $800 include? if it's a major service, that might include a new battery and tyres. or other major components.

It's possible that the one you linked to will be fine, they might save money by using aftermarket parts instead of Manufacturer parts.
I don't know. I struggle to trust a lot of people in the automotive industry.

I'm not a massive computer guy but it looks to me like you might have an issue with your connection or your router/modem.
how old is it?
do you use naked DSL or do you have a voice line into your place? It almost sounds like you've been throttled or have packet loss issues.

they are suggestions, I'm not overly sure about diagnosis. If you have a voice phone line plug just that in and see if you can get a clear line.
if yes, gradually include each other component on your line seperately and check again. this includes your ADSL splitter.
I had an ADSL splitter fail once before. I can't remember the symptoms but I remember being frustrated.

If you find any item that causes your voice signal to get staticy then that is most likely your problem and needs to be fixed or replaced.

worst case scenario, there might be a problem with the wiring in your residence.

The wife and I were talking this morning and we both remember a childrens show from when we were kids (mid to late 80s, maybe earlier) that featured a snail with the lid of a steel garbage can on its head. That is all we both remember.

Anyone else remember this or even better, know the name of the show??

i complained about my tablet (android) breaking a recharge port and thus being unusable in another thread

Now i am considering getting a better tablet, but money is the limiting factor. Looking at the samsung galaxy note, but not sure that i will use it any more that the chaep tablet i had.

would like to keep the price between $200 - $400. but if i get another 'el cheapo' one, the chances are quite good that it will break down withinin a year

got used to the 8" 4:3 screen size.

from your experiences, what are my options :D

thank you M

have decided on a galaxy note 10.1 [not the 2014 ed]. Has everything you need in a tablet. For what i want to do with it anyway. And the big plus is that you can draw on it with a wacom technology pen/stylus with 1024 pressure levels. This has me very interested. Would prefer the 2014 ed but dont want to spend that much [`$600], when i can get the standard ed for $430.

Anyone have a galaxy note 10.1? Are you happy you bought it? :D

DO NOT get a Surface! They are garbage. I have an IPad and it is brilliant. Long battery life. Easy to use. Never had a problem.

I have no intention of getting a surface.

Not a Apple/Mac sorta person... been a PC person for decades but android is covering things for the moment. On my 10 year old netbook, im still running xp. but found that I only used it for windows only software when I had my other tablet. everything else was covered by android in some manner :D

thanks for the advice

bit the bullet and bought the galaxy note 10.1 (standard edition, not the 2014 edition), charging now,

Got it for the best price i could find. Painful spending the money, but once it is done you feel a little relieved.

For my many photos I've taken over the years I am looking at setting up a home NAS server with offsite backup. Anyone done this? Can anyone recommend a decent NAS? What about online backup companies?

Cheers.

I've thought about doing this but have never really gotten around to doing it. :o

It all seems rather straight forward enough, I personally prefer to use Netgear equipment and I know that they provide a few NAS devices - Here's one for example (http://www.netgear.com.au/home/products/connected-storage/readynas-100.aspx#tab-overview). :)
I also wouldn't be surprised if they offer some sort of online facilities, as that particular device seems to have some sort of CLOUD function to it. ;)

I hope that has at least given you a start dude, let us know how you go & what you find.
