View Full Version : Custom: Classics Guzzle

Greetings bots and welcome to another Doubledealer custom thread! I recently imported a 4-pack of Deluxe Transformers which included the ones I really, really wanted (Jazz & Tracks) as well as two movie repaints in the form of Fallback (whose colours make him look like G1 Outback, coincidence much?) and Mindset. So I'm thinking...What to do, what to do...Then BLAMMO! Mindset is the Wreckers Guzzle I've been waiting for!! It may be a bit hard to imagine now but I'm sure it's possible, and I will make it happen! :D Watch this space bots!
Okay, so here's what I have to base the custom on. The default hands are far too Decepticon for my liking, so out they go! Gone too is the head & rotating SAMs which will eventually be replaced with a tank turret of some description.

Checklist of parts needed:
1. Seeker fists (being bought from Skullcruncher in the new year)
2. G1 Perceptor head (in transit)
3. Tank Turret (will look at tanks in local hobby stores - deluxe movie Brawl may be an option)
4. Modelling file (to shave plastic so Seeker fists can slide on)
Idea's/possibilities:
1. ROTF Voyager Bludgeon chest piece (unlikely due to having to ruin a killer toy)
2. Shoulder protrusions

Update: Modified the elbow to accept Seeker arms and here he is with my Thundercracker fists to see how it looks. As Ace Ventura would say: 'Like a glove!'. His proper hands will have holes drilled so he can properly grip his futuristic uzi's.

Oh hey, I saw one in Facebook the other day using This mold as well for - you guessed it Guzzle! He used the barrel from a Generation 2 Galvatron - it looked nice in bot mode but the tank mode is kinda meh. he did mold a whole new sculpt for the head which was spot on. Can't wait to see your version Double D.

Any links to pics mate? It would be nice to see how someone else has gone about this custom, especially in terms of colour placement. As long as a decent tank turret can be sourced I'm sure the tank mode will look great, however, it will need to be the perfect fit/scale and have a speccy paint job (I don't think simply applying dark grey will cut the mustard - it will probably need highlights, panel detailing etc.).

Addit: okaaay found it, not much pics provided in the gallery . I'm also, not sold on the tank mode, as I mentioned before. You can most likely do something better for the tank mode... as it looks kinda forced IMO

Oooh, that looks fantastic! I actually like the tank mode, although I'd rather have a more sci-fi look ala Wreckers for my particular project. What he's done is brilliant though, inspirational stuff! So inspirational in fact that I'm trying my hand at making my own Comic-style Guzzle head!
Here are the results so far, keeping in mind I haven't sanded down the outer 'ring' part yet as I have to wait 6 hours for the putty to dry. Some of the sandpaper I used on the 'main head ball' rubbed off onto the putty which is probably down to my using the stuff I got from Bunnings and not my Tamiya grade paper...Oops. Oh well, it'll be sprayed over at some point. :p

It's okay old pal, you'll fit in just fine. Here are the main shades of grey we'll be painting you, light grey for the tank tracks and the darker grey for the main parts.

NIce Double D. So that head is all molded from scratch? wow! Im only good with paper in making 3d stuff but not with putty though, always ends up with my finger prints - literally on the surfaces which frustrates me. Although Im going to be aking you and prolly a couple of other guys here on paint tips later later on, coz Im planning on a repaint job to make a Classics Quake and Spinister from unused Blast off and Swindle figures of Generations Bruticus Maximus. Posted this idea in another thread already. Blast off wont need much painting but swindle is a total makeover paint-wise.

I know what you mean about the fingerprints, drives ya nuts eh! I find if you lightly go over the affected areas with a water-dipped finger it can help, and then you can usually finish it off with some fine sanding if needs be (the Tamiya stuff dries like a rock so you can go nuts with this, especially if using 1200+ grit paper).
Excited to hear about Spinister & Quake, look forward to hearing/seeing more as this project develops!
EDIT: Oh and regarding Guzzle's head, anything that looks like blu-tac was done by me (using the my trusty copy of LSotW as a reference). Other pieces were sourced from parts/duplicates.

Thanks for the feedback amigo's! Since finishing off the head I've washed & scrubbed all the individual parts & have just now completed all the priming. I think I'm going to have a sit down after breathing in all those lovely fumes. :p
Unlike Tomahawk, Mindset is an absolute joy to take apart which will make the painting process soooo much easier.
I tried out some of the light grey Tamiya paint I bought the other day and unfortunately it's not gonna be up to snuff, it just looks like the primer I'm using. So I'll be picking up some white paint and will use that for the head, treads etc. instead. :)
Tip of the day: A fantastic way of dusting Transformers, & oddly enough, smoothly laying/moving putty into hard to reach area's is by using an eyeshadow brush. I got one from Coles for a couple of clams and it's brilliant for these purposes!

Thanks mang :D sculpting with putty really is one of those things that you can spend a ridiculous amount of time on. In order to get the side air vents nice and smooth/angled I sanded them using 600 grit paper, primed them then very lightly sanded with 1000 grit paper (did those last steps X3 before it looked the business).
One thing I find strange is the Tamiya 1000 grit paper has a lot more cutting power than the 1000 grit paper I bought from Bunnings (they look totally different too). You certainly have to be very careful when using the Tamiya stuff, don't use it when tired is my advice!

Thanks Hursti. :) I lost count of how many times I had to touch up the head due to getting black paint where it wasn't wanted. Glad to finally say it's done and I can leave that part alone. :p
I just put a second (the last) coat of gloss clear coat on the painted parts bar the head, so I'll be applying some nice black wash on the grey parts this Wednesday once it's fully cured. Stay tuned for more updates later in the week my friends!

Mate he's all ready to rock and roll pretty much, I just have to get more clear coat before I can fully assemble him (ran out last weekend). Can't stand going into the city though (closest place that sells the Mr Hobby stuff I use) so I dunno when I'll be getting more supplies...I'll try and drag myself there sometime this week so I can finish off this custom.

Yeah, and I kinda got it for free too! Nick Roche is a champ :)
I remember seeing Guzzle's name on one of those Walmart computer listings recently, so we may get our first Guzzle since the original soon. It'd be awesome if it was a new mould, which is not out of the question given all the comic-based love Hasbro has been giving us recently... but likely is just a repaint of Warpath or some PCC figure or something.
