I like the look of Gnaw over this, but such a left turn for an exclusive after what we have been shown.
I just realised from a post on the tfw2005 site, that of the toys so far known and assumed to be part of this year's BotCon set, which is a Gen2 them, only one originated in Gen2.
Known:
Spark and Clench - Originally Euro Gen1 characters, later released in Gen2 packaging.
Breakdown and Streetstar/Streetwise - Originally Gen1 characters that were only going to be redecos in Gen2.
Skybyte- RiD character.
Speculated:
Gnaw - Gen1 character.
Slicer- Euro Gen1 Actionmaster character.
Rapido - Actual Gen2 original character.
If these are all BotCon toys, there should be a couple more as well, but the majority are not original Gen2 characters being homaged in this 'Gen2' set this year.
Pete from FunPub even posted to try to explain it (every delay with registration has people lashing out on anything BotCon these days), but failed to justify Skybyte or refute the claim that they haven't included any Gen2-original characters.
His hands are tied though, because even if there are Gen2-original character toys being released at the convention, he's not allowed to spoil the surprise and announce it.Quote:
Thirty of the released G2 molds were in fact G1 molds. G2 was launched by G1 molds. Having Breakdown and Streetstar in there serves a couple purposes for each; Doing an unreleased deco for the one (who was slated to be a G2 toy) and homaging the first BotCon exclusive, Breakdown, which was G2 themed BotCon exclusive actually. Also, we liked the VS theme as well. You have Protectobot vs Stunticon and Euro G2 good guy boss man vs Euro G2 big bad outlaw leader
Spark and Clench, well, while initially released in G1, they did appear in G2, and are in fact G2 for that reason.
The box set and the souvies all tie in to each other this year and the story is all kinds of fun.
Reguardless of the storyline, they should have left Skybyte as the attendee toy and kept the set at least Gen2 pure.
On a side note, I think they have done prety well in making it look like skybyte from just recolouring on the chest and a new head.
Today's sweetener for no pre-registration is a look at the box for the box-set.

Very colourful.
I wonder if the cover art is a hint at the type of story this year. The opposing sides are fighting side-by-side, so maybe they are being made to combine forces (by someone from a different era perhaps?) against a common foe.
Maybe tomorrow for pre-registration then...

It's 2010, maybe they fight Unicron? :D
Not the whole 'Unicron' plot device again... Hasn't that just been the most over-used plot device ever, especially in these fan inspired 'official' stories?
Can't people think up some new enemy worthy of taking on the TFs? Being a rehash of Gen2 this year, we're bound to see a re-use of The Swarm, Jhiaxus and Liege Maximo too... :(
Isn't Skybyte's inclusion just fun randomness?
Since the mold had never been redecoed before, why not?
