MtMtE #25/Dark Cybertron #6
So the pressing thing from the first 5 issues could be boiled down to: what was Shockwaves plan with the Necrotitan, and how does this tie into Metroplex?
Come issue #6 and we get an issue with ZERO pages featuring the cycloptic one. Sure we got a lot more Lost Light pages than the last few issues so that helps alot. Things on Cybertron barely change. It is an RiD problem, so little happens on Cybertron again, but it takes up more than it's fair share of panels.
Same thing in the dead Universe, alot of panels rehashing and floundering for time but not much happens, in fact, Nova was shown to be landing at the end of last issue, yet it takes pages of useless dialogue from Prime/Hardhead/Rodimus before he makes his actual re-appearance.
This series is really starting to show the same symptoms as RiD, it is spending a lot of time doing nothing and wasting space with useless and boring nattering to fill a page quota to draw out for time while we wait for the rushed villian monologue in #11 and stupidly fast resolution in #12.
At the moment this event is boring me and I only wait for the resumption of MtMtE. I might even drop RiD in protest unless things really ramp up and the quality drastically improves.
-Edit- After reading some more info about the issue, it turns out someone who went on a trip in a totally nonsense tie in a few years ago is back, not that you can tell from the awful art he gets on the final page.
On Twitter IDW have been posting some teasers for the future called
After The Dark
They are spoilerish so view at your own risk
ATD Teaser 1
ATD teaser 2
And the game changer
ATD teaser 3
Interesting...
If that last one turns to be true it could be very interesting, I wonder what Roberts had to trade to get that one.
The teasers are definitely true, cause the April solicitations have come out!
Read MTMTE #22 (Skids pack in) and although it didn't really focus on Skids, it is by far my favorite of the comics I've read. So many funny moments and Rung's altmode was entertaining as well.
Characters were really funny as well:
Cyclonus: "I'm not a Decepticon. I want that on screen"
"Footage removed by order of the duly appointed enforcer of the tyrest accord."
Blaster: "I thought you didn't like hats."
Rodimus: "Theme night at Swerve's: "People you'd like to punch."
Rodimus: "I was a lone Megatron in a sea of Whirls." CLASSIC. :D
Whirl was by far the best here in this issue:
Whirl (boastfully): "Well, I bet you haven't been blacklisted by the galactic council."
Skids: "Oh, Whirl. Don't tell me you're going to-I think 16 million years of war just came to an end"
Whirl: "And that, my itty-bitty friend, is how the experts do it." :p:D
I thought it was quite out of character to see Optimus start in with bashing stuff and making threats, but there was reasoning behind it - breaking your knuckles then smashing your mate in the mouth is a hell of a way to tackle a problem though!
Yeah, until I read DC7 I couldn't tell it was Kup either :p
I initially thought it was Spanner!
So MtMtE #26 is out...
And the best issue of Dark Cybertron yet. Things move forward in all three (two?) sections, characters get some good lines and the art is also the best of the series.
There is still no Shockwave/Galvatron action, and with only 3 issues plus the finale #12 which will surely have to wrap things up and return the series to their regular ongoing status, I fear that we are getting a Furman-esque event comic, where 11 issues of slow build up culminate in a four panel fist fight that ends everything overly abruptly.
The three fembots get some decent time on screen and reveal what they have been doing, events from MtMtE #22 come back to the 'fore and also throw some light on events that are sure to be revealed as important in MtMtE season 2 (regarding a "Holy Grail"). I am also now intrigued as to what the ongoing with the fembots will fcus on, events pre-Dark Cybertron or post Dark Cybertron, since the fembots seem to not have just "appeared" out of nowhere. Getaway knew of them, so could they be experiments out of the "institute"?
Whirl and Megatron get most of the good lines here, but Bumblebee and ratchet also keep things moving. Starscream gets show to once again become a pathetic wreck once he gets into a power position. I am glad he gets bugger all time here, other than to help the newly back to Iacon (gone all of an evening) characters get back into the groove (of keeping him down). The Dead Universe stuff rushes through without even trying to explain anything (other than Rodimus's numbers) and I am sure Nightbeat has been kept alive to info-dump sometime near the conclusion.
So while nothing much actually happens until the final page, the dialogue and faint glimpses of information make it seem like stuff happens, and the flow of the comic is good again. There are still negatives and weak spots, but after 7 issues, it seems to be finding its feet.
Artwise it is very strong, Burcham's colours are incredible across the board. My main complaint is that on Cybertron, Prowl's crest continues to shrink, which is a shame since Coller's cover nails him perfectly, too bad he couldn't have been the Cybertron artist throughout instead of Rojo. Kup actually looks like Kup and the fembots have some awesome designs that sadly will be lost in the translation to toy.
If you can ignore that while everything that happens in/around the Lost Light apparently takes only a few hours on Cybertron (since it has been all of maybe a day since the Bots and Cons were ejected from the city) this is starting to improve. When you hit the bottom the only way is up.
I've read the latest issue and notice that there is a huge issue with the scale of Metroplex and the undead Metrotitan.
It has been shown that the Metrotitan on Cyberton is small enough that his head is about the height of Starscream, whereas Metroplex is massive compared to that, even the Rodpod being smaller than his eye canal.
However in the final reveal on the last page it shows the Metrotitan and Metroplex to be the same height, which would be correct, but if they were using the scale from the most of the issues, Metroplex should tower over the Metrotitan.
Looks like they are going to kill off Metroplex, which I think is sad. Also the obvious writing out of Rodimus as captain of the Lost Light.
Other than that, the end is near (yay!).
I did feel that this issue made the events of #22 less "random-filler" than it did at the time.
There were some cryptic hints to the fembot origins ('catching up on 4 million years of whos who') but introducing them so far into the crossover seems to just clutter it further.
I think the "Cybertron" artist is to fault here.
I agree with the Yay too.
I had to buy #27 digitally as Phantomzone said shipment was delayed to Saturday, Ill get it then.
This was a good issue, as you can tell Roberts had a bigger hand in it as the writing is snappy and character based rather than exposition for the most part.
I'll leave the details for later, but the fake out "attack" was great as were the threats and potential hints at what we could be seeing soon. Still no idea who will die later on, there sure were alot of baiting panels though.
My vague comments:
Ratchet remains my favourite character in MtMtE
Lots of feels for Chromedome
Art was magnificent
Sideswipe and Streaker meeting back up = awesome art, no words were necessary.
Megatron saying some profound things, him or the ore talking
Shockwaves master plan took a few reads to comprehend.
And Scoop... what a d***.
My store has been delayed too (bad weather in the US) and since is still part of the crossover I'm happy to wait. It does however, from the previews, look like the best chapter so far. Shame it took so long to bring the two casts together. Still feels like there could have been a better prequel in RID to cover some of the events that have drawn this crossover out.
Edit: Well after seeing a few more comments I caved and bought it on comixology. Best issue of the crossover so far. Most like the MTMTE book I love. Helps to have Milne back too. Some nice closure to minor MTMTE subplots, some nice set up of new ones. I was right, I feel like you could skip the first 9 chapters and come straight to this issue from the last pre-DC issue of the book. I'm keen for "season 2" to start.
It was a good issue. Not sure it is that case because it is coming towards the end, but it would've nice to finish the Dark Cybertron story in Swerve's bar
I didn't even get time to go to PZ until today, so I've been blissfully unaware of any shipping delay. :p I like the one-way-street affection between the Constructicons and Prowl. ;) Chromedome flipping out was a surprise.
And also...
OMG, THEY KILLED WASPINATOR!
THOSE CHILDREN-BORN-TO-UNWED-PARENTS! :p :D </SouthPark>
So I'm just going to put my thoughts about DC#12 in here.
It was an okay end for an okay crossover. Suffered from a far too slow build up with a rushed conclusion that was very whimpery. It was a 12 issue comic that brought everyone back to Cybertron ready to split into their new teams. Not a soft reset, but close enough.
For such a big world ending threat, the bots and cons get over it quick enough and I wonder if anyone actually died other than Metalhawk, Bumblebee and the Ammonites.
My big question now is; why would anyone follow or elect Starscream leader now? He did nothing the entire event but moan and whinge (nothing new there).
And when did Galvatron catch up on Decepticon history and then begin to align himself with them???
Spoilers for Dark Cybertron finale, Chapter 12
I wasn't sure where to put them either, but I'll follow your lead.
Whirl's "what a cop out line" made me laugh thinking of your comments in the preview thread. And Lord Zed was spot on about the genocide. I guess he and Starscream think alike ;)
I think the early chapters were too insignificant and the story could have been more compact. The crossover definitely picked up in the last quarter, and having more of the regular art teams back helped too.
Did anyone else die? Probably not. Will anyone stay dead? Probably not. The leaving of Bumblebee's body with that portal gives him a way back.
The defeat of Shockwave makes sense based on the backstory he's been given by Roberts. But this story really, really ends his story. That's it. There's nowhere left to go. Of course there's a good chance he'll be back but this is the best way to finish his tale so I hope he stays buried and just used in flashbacks.
I am willing to see Megatron's change of heart at face value based on this issue too and look forward to him on the Lost Light (and also what the DJD have to think about Megatron abandoning the Decepticons - this might be hinted at in the current solicitations.)
I also like that of all robots to take command of the remaining Decepticons, it's Galvatron. Will be interested to see how that plays out. Notice too that when he appears at the end he's surrounded by a blue jet and a purple jet. I only noticed that on a second read through.
The Starscream stuff, well I guess that's what Windblade's story is to cover and also partly why of the three next chapters that's the one I least care about. I think he's still "elected" leader though so until that changes...? The general NAILs population were pretty conspicuous in their absence in the plot of the later parts of the story.
What a beautifully epic finale for Shockwave.
There are still a few things in this book that bug me, but pretty much the same stuff that's bugged me since MTMTE & RiD began (i.e. still too "terra centric", not enough transforming)
I really like how Megatron had the big change of heart, and it'll be interesting to see what happens. I honestly hope he does NOT revert to becoming a Decepticon again, but rather earnestly wants to join the Autobots. But then the Autobots would want Megatron to somehow answer for his crimes, and if Megatron has admitted that he was wrong this whole time, he would possibly want to repent and make up for what he's done. Imprisoning Megatron would be boring, but perhaps Megatron could try to "repay his debt" to Cybertronian society by serving a certain role for the Autobots/Cybertron ... as a form of ongoing penance. Maybe he might join the Lost Light and they would resume their quest for the Knights of Cybertron... or maybe Megatron would abandon his fusion cannon and swear an oath of non-violence... etc. I like the idea of Galvatron becoming the new Decepticon leader. :)
An interesting concept (an "Autobot" Megatron in the comic, that could prompt Hasbro to release a cheap Autobot redeco toy)... after I posted last August, a query about if it had ever been done before, as either a toy or in fiction....
(*later pointed out there were two, but possibly ONLY two in 30 years - T-Wrecks & Reverse Convoy)Quote:
For some reason, Hasbro & TakaraTomy are able to release evil versions of Optimus toys, and fans are fine with it, but never* a heroic or Autobot version of a Megatron toy, that I can think of. (in the normal universe - not counting the Shattered Glass universe)
Quote:
So does this mean that the moral of the story from Hasbro & TakaraTomy, is that naughty/evil/criminal people never redeem themselves and become good... so there is no point in trying to turn over a new leaf and do something good?
I doubt they would have even known about some small query posted on a small fansite like ours, so I'm not saying that someone there picked up on it... but it is the right timing (8 months) for it to show up in the comic to be a nice coincidence.Quote:
Would it really kill them (Hasbro or TakaraTomy) to have a "reformed" Megatron in at least one continuum to make it different/interesting
From the final Dark Cybertron it looks like Galvatron might be taking command of the Decepticons, which could plausibly be a permenant move considering his history in the cartoon. Finding a new place and relevance for Megatron seems like a natural step.
Wow, the DJD coming after their creator. That I'd like to see.
Yeah, or TM2 Blackarachnia. It would be pretty amazing to have a major western Megatron toy with an Autobot symbol. But then, considering Leader Jetfire doesn't seem to have that gimmick, and he's the most iconic insignia-swapper in more than one continuity, it could well not happen.
I wouldn't mind seeing a Reformed Megatron toy w/ an Autobot rub sticker, but stick a Decepticon rub sign as a chase variant. There'd be no way to tell which one's the chase figure until the toy's been opened. ;) Kinda harkens back to the old G1 Mini-Spies gimmick. :D
Have started reading this series and it's amazing. Just amazing.
Best. TF. Series. Ever. I hope it keeps it up.
So many characters, so many different motives, personalities and eccentricities, but the plot holds together so well. Up to issue #8 and the like many hoped here, I hope they stick around and join the Lost Light eventually.
So many of the lines of the characters either:
- allude to history (world building)
- build on reputations of existing characters (world building)
- foreshadow future plot points
Ironically, this is the perfect toy commercial. As I warm to each character/group, I try to figure out if I have a good enough CHUG representation of them. I think for most we do but doubt the DJD will get toys anytime soon so I've been thinking which toys could form part of the DJD.
The other thing it did was make me not regret chasing down Black Shadow. The toy all of a sudden has a more important place in my collection now.
As much as I like the DJD, I do have a quibble with how Megatron could've spared them to be "Decepticon Police" if they're such a frightening mob? Better used on the front lines or strategically.
Some of my favourite moments in the 1st 8 issues:
- Ratchet figuring out Pharma's plot and showing why he's -the- chief medical officer
- Magnus teaching Tailgate about the Autobot code
- Swerve opening the bar
- Trailbreaker / Fort Max in the bar scene
- Red Alert giving Rung the evidence of Overlord's presence
- Misfire's introduction of the Decepticon 'Lost Light' crew to Fulcrum
- Rewind / Swerve on rivet duty
- Cyclonus' readers digest version of the war to Tailgate
So much more, I'm not mentioning but this is a hell of a series. Other comic series take years to have that many memorable moments these days with the deconstructed form of storytelling.
So, the trades are being rereleased with new covers, along with RiD? or is this just a volume one thing?
Only volume 1 so far
I'm really new to this. I haven't bought a Transformers comic for nearly 20 years. I found myself not knowing what was going on with all these new figures that I was buying who had back stories that made no sense to me.
Then they had a sale on 62 issues of MTMTE and the other one, so I got them to read on my iPad.
The comments above have been good to read, but I find myself a bit stuck on some things. I am up to Issue 5 (I think) of MTMTE and so far I like the story but I'm a bit unsure about the attitude to death of fellow bots. Rodimus keeps saying "Not on my watch" etc, but they keep dying and he doesn't seem to care. I first thought there was a real Star Trek Original Series vibe to the story (Rodimus = Kirk, Ultra Magnus = Spock, Ratchet = McCoy, Drift = Sulu(?)) but Kirk was always hurt by the loss of a crewman.
Then in the plague episode where Drift cuts up the patient who was looking for help - there was just no reaction to the cold-blooded murder of Dent. No shock at the killing, no attempt to justify it as euthanasia, nothing. I don't know if Drift is punished for this later, but I suspect not.
Is this just a normal part of IDW? I'm afraid reading the comics might be a mistake for me, rather than just learning the gloss of the characters from the biographies, etc.
MTMTE has been going for 30 issues so far, including one annual.
Just keep reading it, MTMTE is one of the best Transformers comics ever made, and there is a lot of stuff seeded at the start of this series which starts making sense around issue 17 onwards.
The writer of this series, James Roberts, does spend a few issues just getting the characters, especially unused TF characters, fleshed out at the start, but as I said, you will be rewarded.
Rodimus is no Kirk. He's pretty bad at his job and this is an ongoing plot point. We see funerals as the series goes on. If there's any concern about death is that it's really hard to kill a TF (and that becomes a plot point too).
As for the Dent scene, that's played as a typical zombie horror type scene, and mostly to show that Drift is a ridiculous sword wielding show off. Ratchet instantly has a go at him for the overreaction. And then the story goes on to show how far Ratchet will go to save life. If Drift doesn't get punished enough well that goes to the pile of evidence that Rodimus is a pretty bad captain.
Anyone have any idea how often the comixology TF sales come up? I know I just missed one (my luck) – is it quarterly etc? Thanks again.
