Recently picked up Wild At Heart on blu ray for really cheap. Forgot how bizarre that film is. It is a David Lynch film after all though.
Makes me want to track down Lost Highway too. And rewatch all Twin Peaks.

Saw The Winter Soldier on the weekend.
I was impressed. Cap does a fair bit of arse kicking in this one :)
Just came back from watching 'The Dark Crystal' at the Astor.
Well worth watching on the big screen after all these years.
Check out Jim Hensons Creature Shop Challenge if you have not yet seen it. Its an American reality show were the winner gets a contract with the Henson Creature Shop. Its got the usual bitchiness and drama that all reality shows have. They team up and complete different challenges each week, usually making something within a few days.
In episode 2 they had to invent a new Skeksi from The Dark Crystal. They had 3 days to design and build, and then a puppeteer performed inside the creature for each team on a sound stage. Great episode.
Just watched a Bollywood scary movie called A Flat. It's so weird... despite being this dark and serious scary film, it manages to put in no less than two Bollywood style musical scenes... the first one is rather sensual, but the second is really upbeat with music and dancing etc. And it goes on for a while, which really makes the spooky feel of the film feel disjointed. But I've been told that this is what sells in India, and that movies without a musical number tend to not do well, so I guess from a marketing POV it's understandable, but from a story-telling POV it's really quite campy and just stalls the plot during the whole scene like most of the supposedly funny scenes in a Michael Bay film. :p There's a third musical moment, but it's done better and fits in reasonably well with the scene of the movie (it works more like a musical narrative rather and goes with the flow of the story rather than stalling it).
The soundtrack also sometimes goes over the top in some places, and I think that for a movie of this genre, less would've been more. This movie would've been scarier if the damn soundtrack didn't give away every scary moment. Scary movies are spookier when you've got dead silence and suddenly something freakin' horrifying just jumps at you! The orchestra just does all this build up, so by time you see the scary thing, you've already braced yourself and it's just... well... not as scary. And some of the scary elements weren't terribly original either, but the story does have some nice surprises (particularly with the roles of the protagonist and antagonist) and builds well to its final conclusion.
Trailer
The Winter Soldier.
<Spoilers>
I was blown away by this movie! It was everything I hoped for and more.
I enjoyed how it showcased more of Caps abilities than the previous First Avenger and Avengers, such as when they he gets aboard the pirate ship at the beginning and simply takes down almost everyone whilst running past them, it looked brutal and elegant at the same time.
The espionage and intrigue was also great, and I couldn't help but think of Civil War when SHIELD/HYDRA came after him. The cinema I saw it in was full of people who obviously didn't know who The Winter Soldier was, so when his mask came off it was revealed to be Bucky it was met with a unified 'Gasp!' and whisperings of 'OMG! It's his friend! It's Bucky!' something I haven't experienced at the movies in some time.
I also loved Sam and Steve's relationship, it felt great and natural to me, and Anthony Mackie looked fantastic as The Falcon!
4 Stars from, it would be 5 but, for reasons unknown to me, I found Black Widow to be kinda annoying in this one :(
Sure have been :D
Captain America 2 was great. Really enjoyed it. Amazing Spider-Man 2 wasn't.
I saw the new Spidey flick this morning and the more I think about it the more I don't like it. There's all sorts of parallels that should be addressed and could be interesting but aren't because other random things come up. It's like the writers kept coming up with ideas but didn't follow them through and instead you get padding. And multiple super-villain origin stories in your film don't help.
My three favourite superhero movies are all second sequels - X-2, Dark Knight, Spider-Man 2(!) - and Thor 2 and Capt 2 were both really enjoyable so I guess my hopes/expectations were too high for Amazing 2 and they weren't met.
I watched it last night on Channel 99, for a second time, just because it is so bad... but that was the point of the movie. It was almost a parody of the "disaster" genre, by thinking up a disaster that is absurd. And that's why it is so funny. You keep laughing at each stupid thing that they throw in there, and then hate yourself for watching it. :p
The movie intentionally did "bad" so well, that it actually had more viewers on the second screening, and even more on the third in America.
It is so unique, that it has spawned a sequel... and even the title plays up on it too - "Sharknado 2: The Second One". :D
Still trying to forget that Sharknado movie :(
Saw Amazing Spider-Man 2 (or Spader-Man if you frequent any of the local flea markets ;)) on the weekend just passed; I give it a solid 6.5 / 10. Better than the first, but still a bit of a disappointment. Should've checked out Captain America based on the opinions above.
Watched Walter Mitty and World War Z -- ho hum.... ;)
Cap 2: Great action scenes but lacking in story. Could have expanded more on relationships between characters. Great popcorn watch the action movie. 8/10
Lego movie. Great. Suburb. The ending threw me off but by the time it had finished I could not think of a better way to end. The ending may throw you out of the story but then it all wraps up nicely. Will watch it again on dvd. 10/10.
I never thought I'd see a bad marvel movie. Please give me back Toby's Spiderman. Rise of Electro was terrible. The movie was in a constant boring tangent. Spoilers don't read if you don't want to know some things... : There was no real main antagonist, all horrible death scenes. The movie ends in a fight scene. Chemistry between Peter and Gwen was lost compared to the first one. Green Goblin when he speaks, just makes you crack up at how bad the voice is. The voice was like a 5 year old pretending to talk evil as a joke. I'm not even going to go further, it just makes me angry. Especially after how good the first one was.
The graphics and costume designs were fantastic though.
3/10 for me. I went in with no hopes, after hearing what everyone said. I came out with even less hopes. Role on Guardians of the Galaxy to give me a real marvel fix!
Watched the Lego Movie on the weekend with my wife and kids. Probably the most fun movie I have seen in a long while. It was fantastic and cannot recommend it highly enough.
Amazing Spiderman 2. 7/10. Enjoyable. They show the very last scene in the trailers.
Godzilla. 7/10. Enjoyable. Reminiscent of Pacific Rim in terms of monster fight scenes.
Lately its all been good vs bad action scenes, I wonder how long this will go until we, the viewing public, get sick of watching good battle bad and triumph.
Whats next? X-men, TFs AOE, Guardians of galaxy, Avengers 2, kinda needing something new besides fighting to win/survive good and bad...
Is there anything after credits in Godzilla or Amazing Spiderman 2?
No for Godzilla, a preview scene from X-Men (straight from that film, not a unique thing like the Marvel Studio movies have) during the Amazing Spider-Man 2 credits.
The X-Men clip is probably the best thing about Amazing 2. Really disliked it: overlong, too many go nowhere subplots, stereotypes straight out of the 1980s, disservice to the best character.
Godzilla was disappointing too, it had its moments but I probably wouldn't watch it again. It's an unpopular opinion, but I like the 1998 Godzilla and I did see that twice at the cinema.
Pleasantly surprised to see Garry Chalk make an appearance in Godzilla. Making me feel mighty old is realising that the actress for the protagonist's wife (and mother of their child) is the younger sister of the Olsen twins!
Enjoyed Godzilla, good to see he actually looks like Godzilla, unlike the supersized T-Rex from the 98 movie.
I really enjoyed Godzilla. It was not what I was expecting and had the same issues as the transformers films, too much human, not enough focus on the monsters.
Godzilla looked great, moved well and the decisions the humans made were plausible. At the least I can see them being discussed!
It won't be everyone's cup of tea but it was a more emotional and smarter movie than I anticipated.
I enjoyed it, but with regards to the human factor, my problem was that I wish they had just settled on one protagonist. I found the human element in this film to be completely unfocused, as it jumped from character to character not one of which had any big impact on the overall story, basically all the human characters seemed to be cruising along so there was no real tension there. Good excuse for some great scenes though.
Pretty awesome monster fights too, even though Godzilla kinda Man of Steel'd the first Muto. Good to see the real Godzilla back too, not that terrible Zilla guy. :D
I still prefer Pacific Rim though, it was just as silly but there was more kaiju fightin!
I didn;t mind the flitting of "main" human characters as much. There were too many of them, and some of them were very wooden, but keeping the father as the link during the 15 year gap was a good idea to tie it together.
I must say that the lead military man must've been exceptionally well trained to be able to do everything that he did.
Watanbe just seemed to be gawking/in awe for most of the film and he had nothing but gut instinct to base his theories on!
I'm sure Watanabe will redeem himself in Age of Extinction as the ever-lovable and totally non-cliché Drift. :p ;)
The new xmen was a great film, I really enjoyed it. It is not as well written as first class, but it runs along nicely and didn't confuse my missus with the time travel stuff, so bonus points for that.
Some won't enjoy it due to the changes from the source material or the heavy use of wolverine, but I think he is the best actor and character to carry us through these stories.
There are some lovely scenes and great effects in this movie, but it is stolen by Quicksilver, he owns his scenes.
Saw Godzilla earlier in the week and was completely enthralled by it; perfectly paced with solid enjoyment throughout and man did the King of Monsters have a presence! :D:cool:
I'm really glad to see that a 2nd film has been Green-lit for production, with a possible 3rd on the way afterward - Gareth Edwards (Director) has also been named as the director of the 1st Star Wars spin-off movie!:D
They did what they needed to do to get themselves a clean slate for future movies without rebooting. Don't know how many films they'll get with their ageing roster, but they can now set the next however many films whenever they want.
Jennifer Lawrence is the central character for events that occur, and she carries it with aplomb. Thankfully they got a bodysuit made for her to reduce makeup time!
Damn you guys are making this X-Men sound awesome!
