Gonna be a sweet year
Holy hot butter!
And for those that are going I think this will be a great year to see new stuff at Botcon. With an earlier convention (less time for leaks) and possible news about a new Masterpiece figure, this^^^ sort of Fall of Cybertron info, TF:Prime info and a baseformer! WOW!
This is what makes me nervous and why I am reluctant to jump in the 'Better than FP' bandwagon. I will wait for detailed pictures before I make up my mind on which is better but I think it is safe to say that it will be better than PCC since at least the individual components can transform.
What worries me is Hasbro has an atrocious history with combiners since the Armada era. Their latest 'proper' combiners were the Energon ones and those sucked horribly. It is a wonder and a show of inventiveness that FP managed to make such an awesome toy out of that garbage with the upgrades.
Anyways, as it has been said, these are the 'Cybertronian' version of Bruticus which is still very different to that of FP's. One really doesn't supplant the other in the least, they actually complement one another...assuming Hasbro's ends up good.
It is good to see that we have something from Hasbro to get excited about and wait in anticipation for, I had totally given up on them. I hope to see more as it would finally show that Hasbro 'gets it'.
I think for some that couldn't afford/purchase or didn't want to buy the FP set for various reasons, these figs while off in terms of aesthetic, could be shoehorned in as a classics replacement which is all good. Ill be getting it since it is just awesome, regardless of the fact that I own the upgrade set.
One of the initial interviews that I read/watched on FOC stated that they chose Bruticus because out of all the gestalts, it was the best to suit Hasbro's policies of no similar vehicles in case assortments- i.e. being a tank, jeep, helicopter, etc they are different enough then a bunch of construction vehicles on the pegs.
Id say that these may be individual releases but there maybe special packs to accommodate- I wonder if onslaught is of a larger scale voyager perhaps? Or perhaps they have a new strategy- will definitely be interesting to see.
and also what combiner port tech they will be using....:D
It is a possibility that Hasbro may be using this to test out for potential future combiners if ever there was a suitable push for them. Maybe PCC did do well enough for Hasbro to head in this direction?
Another thing that people have stated is that this is a response by Hasbro in seeing what the 3rd parties have done... it could be, but could also be just coincidence. However if this is true, then 3rd party has done its job in pushing Hasbro towards recognizing and catering more to collectors where their previous policies prevented this.
Well given Hasbro's previous stance on combiners and how popular the 3rd party ones have been, it is certainly possible. Perhaps the 3rd parties did give Hasbro that much needed 'kick in the butt' to snap them back in gear.
If this is the case then I am very proud to have been a 3rd party supporter :D
More official stuff like this please!
This pic just in...

Very funny
But it does illustrate how there has been a total re-thinking on how they have been designing things.
Brawl's picture has what looks to be an Energon port on his butt. The Energon method of combination wasn't bad so I am glad they are using it instead of PCC.
Yeah, I don't think this makes FP Colossus redundant, as Sutton stated.
This is a cybertronian-mode take on the character(s) anyway, and we've only seen teaser shots.
Not that I don't wish for it, but I doubt that FOC Bruticus will have ankle tilt or articulated fingers. 50/50 on Onslaught's cannons having some kind of mobility. Plus Colossus has the two shotguns, giant knife and the anti-tank sniper rifle going for him. That's tough to best, if you want to make comparisons that is.....
I'm still getting this because Bruticus is my favorite combiner, but yeah, it won't be a replacement.
Swindle looks great.
Brawl looks meh - the non rotating turret kills it for me.
If the unrevealed 5 are the combaticons and they form into Bruticus I am ALL over this.
EDIT: Just read that this is touted as 5 deluxe molds being "One of the biggest combiners Hasbro has ever produced"
WOW. Take my money Hasbro, take it all.
I figured we'd get one of the Combaticons in this line but all of them? and they combine?! Plus we're getting Shockwave?! Holy god damn mother of etc.
The other interesting factor here is that it's a lot of bad guys to have in a product run. 6 Cons vs 2 Bots for FOC? That's also against Hasbro's usual way of doing things. And not even a repaint/remold of WFC Bumblebee in sight!
Did they get a new CEO and didn't tell anyone?
Remember how there was an announcement of a new CEO (or someone high up the chain) taking charge? Since they say that there is a 2 year cycle for the development of new products before release, perhaps we are only beginning to see his 'contribution' now.
However I advise caution, we don't want to get our hopes up and then Hasbro announces something ridiculous like what happened with the TF Prime figures.
Also interesting is that from the looks of things the other 3 Combaticons would have to be new moulds.
If they were going to do what they did in Energon and have only 3 moulds per combiner then the normal thing for them to do would be to have Brawl and Swindle sharing a mould, but they have separate mould. Logically the other 2 limb Combaticons would be different too.
Yep, the First Edition mess with the Prime toys is a big black mark against them for this year. I don't understand the logic in designing and molding the same characters slightly differently in such a short space of time? Really annoyed with myself for not picking up some of the FE figures now that we've seen how bad the mainline releases are. Can't believe they made Bumblebee worse.
Swindle looks fairly mistransformed in those pics too. So it's a safe bet that the Bruticus' torso isn't quite right either. Hasbro has a long proud history of using mistransformed figures for it's promotional pics :D
Was it 8 new toys or 8 new moulds?
We so far have 8 don't we - Optimus, Jazz, Shockwave, Brawl, Swindle, and the expected Vortex, Onslaught and Blast Off.
If we are also supposed to have Grimlock, and hopefully other Dinobots, some of those would have to be redecos just to give us 8 new moulds.
And having Decepticons outnumbering Autobots would probably be a first, but will make up for the lack of Decepticons in RtS, and outnumbering in Generations so far.
I edited my post above, as I had a quick look at what is so far known, speculated, and expected for the FOC toys.
I counted 9 so far... more if we get other Dinobots.
Apparently these will be coming out in August/September... with the game out in December.
Why exactly did they change Prime's look? This thing is uuuuugly. :(
I agree.
They're trying to visually tell a story with his changing aesthetic. But Hasbro seems hell bent on shoehorning the WFC/FOC into their Prime continuity (despite WFC's 5,492 nods and references to the G1 cartoon and comics) so why they'd head into boxier G1 territory is a mystery. Megatron's design has been revised also, but seems even more spiky and Bayified than before.
Honestly, I'd prefer if it didn't lead into either G1 or Prime, and instead led into it's own new version of a G1 continuity. If they did an eventual game that led to the Autobots and Cons awakening on earth, that'd be awesome. Even better if they used the existing Classics designs for characters where applicable - an easy win for Hasbro with toy tie-ins while giving a second chance to anyone who missed out on crucial Classics characters first time around. But that's just me wishing out loud.
Off the top of my head, one of the earlier screen shots for Fall of Cybertron featured Cliffjumper, using Bumblebee's body, but Prime Cliffjumper's head, and the concept art for what is presumed to be the Nemesis in FOC looks exactly the same as the Prime Nemesis design.
Look at his head! LOOK AT HIS HEAD:

Meanwhile, the Prime tv show has taken some basic visual elements from the WFC video game to represent Cybertron and Primus (or as the game vaguely refers to him, as the "Core of Cybertron"), with the backstory based upon Hasbro's own story bible for the Aligned continuity (Dark Energon, corruption of the planet's core, the bestowing of the Matrix of Leadership onto Optimus).
It doesn't really matter what High Moon thinks or what G1 references they have inserted into WFC/FOC. They're marketing their game towards a gaming audience who vaguely know Transformers, and quite frankly, there's not that many G1 references in WFC anyway that can't simply be repurposed to be something that also happened in the Aligned continuity. No, I do not count lines cribbed from Transformers The Movie as continuity reference.
This is what the wiki refers to as a Continuity Family. You know how the G1 Marvel Comics, the G1 Cartoon and various other G1 continuities can in no way work together, yet are still considered to be G1? Same thing. Aligned (the Prime universe) is a Continuity Family, under which many different continuities, often with some commonality but otherwise might be difficult to reconcile with each other, can exist under one umbrella.
I don't know why people are so offended by the notion of WFC/FOC being part of Prime.
Mmm not bad, these look like pretty cool additions to the War For Cybertron style subline. And it seems like Hasbro may have attempted to make a new combiner too.
So yeah nice, but I'm not about to jump on this new era of Hasbro bandwagon thing, not at least until we see more. They pretty cool, but personally I'd still prefer to see new Generations moulds. The original War for Cybertron toys were nice but they weren't nearly as good as the G1 style Generations toys that accompanied them.
Still it looks like I will now be buying some Hasbro products this year other than GI Joe.
Don't forget to burn that shelf warmer Generations Warpath too, clearly no one likes him either.:p
I cannot agree that WFC fits in the 'Prime/aligned continuity' as Sunbow, Marvel, DW and IDW G1 fit in the 'G1 continuity'.
What the TFwiki has dubbed the 'G1 continuity family' encompasses different continuities but they are all undeniably using G1 characters.
Transformers Prime and the WFC continuity may be different continuities like in the G1 family but they are both considerably different to one another without the same similarities that the G1 continuities share, particularly when it comes to the characters. When you break it all down, WFC and Prime have as much in common as G1 and Armada - Yeah there are several similarities which could be used to shoe horn things together but that doesn't change that both franchises are drastically different and have been placed as such by your own 'continuity family' category system.
I am pretty sure that if Hasbro had not come forth with their 'WFC is TF Prime' policy, you would have placed WFC within the G1 continuity family as logically, it has more in common with G1 than any other franchise. Several of the other references that supposedly 'link them' such as Dark energon have been used drastically different for each and other similarities seem borrowed or incidental at best such as the similarities that G1, RID, Armada and even the Movie verse share.
Obviously Hasbro is still sticking to this 'WFC is Prime' policy and Cliffjumper has been changed aesthetically to match (this could have easily been done to sell the TF Prime toy too) but I am still yet to see something fundamental outside of the marketing dribble and the wiki's own doctrine that tells me that WFC is TF Prime.
I just hope things don't get spoiled as a result of this as I am not particularly fond of what TF Prime has done with their story (particularly Unicron) and I would hate to see that sort of thing sip into other franchises such as this one.
I'll never understand why Hasbro release one wave in massive quantities while restocking with subsequent waves with comparatively tiny quantities. I mean seriously who does these guys numbers? They do it all the time to, again and again.
That said I did notice Toys R Us Miranda actually had no Deluxe TF's at all, while Big W stocked only Prime and Bumblebee.
I think that is local Hasbro only. Overseas by the sound of it seem much more evenly done.
Glad to see that Miranda has begun to clear them, the stores around my area are still saturated but they have begun to amass them all into one corner to make room for other non TF lines.
I'm with Quickstrike on the distribution - there's basically nothing on shelves here.
Maybe a few jetwing Primes hanging around for $150 in Targets and K Marts but that's it.
And I'd still like to get a Deluxe movie Soundwave, but looks like buckley's chance of that locally.
But getting back to these toys, I'd still like to see more of this Bruiticus toy before I start handing out any congratulations to Hasbro. Head and Shoulders could mean anything. Mind you a proper Onslaught would be great, not a fan of any of his previous incarnations since the original.
I believe that's retailers ordering stuff in through Hasbro AU, then sitting on a pile of unsold, overstocked wave 1/1.5/2 guys and not ordering again.
I believe Griffin mentioned once that Hasbro AU told him that Kmart AU ordered lots of Wave 1 yellow box TF2010, which is why they took a long time to get other waves in.
What I'm hoping for it a nice Bruticus. Upgraded by FP to an AWESOME Bruticus
I'm hoping for an awesome bruticus that doesn't need the help of any 3rd party to make it better
I'm so tired of all this 3rd party nonsense. Why can't these companies differentiate themselves like the Transformers & Gobots did back in the day? Make your own show and/or comic, create your own damn characters and stop stealing others intellectual property! /rant
their bot modes seem a bit iffy but swindle's weird body shape is in the concept art. not a fan of how scrawny their arms are but their vehicle modes are pretty swell.
Close. Every Toyfair (in around March), Hasbro (all toy companies really) pressure retailers to pre-order as much as they can convince them toy buy, and using the success of the second movie, Hasbro were able to fool the Retailers into thinking that the third movie toys would be even more successful. Retailers bought up big, and they got burnt.
Now the kids, fans and collectors suffer because retailers cancel any future stock orders they signed up to at Toyfair, and lose money on the brand by clearing stock out at a loss... making it less likely to order new stock of that brand when they finally do clear their shelves.
"fool me once, shame on you... fool me twice, shame on me"
