If you don't like the launchers on the side, can't you move them to the front of the trailer, or am I missing something?

I think you've just explained it there. The blandness is a direct result of show-accuracy. Other MP cars probably have more detailed vehicle modes because of the licensing w/ the vehicle companies, but since Ultra Magnus' trailer is a fictitious design, there's no real-life template for them to base it off. All they have to work off is the simple cartoon design. The cab unit is reasonably detailed as a Freightliner FL86 though. :o
I like Magnus simply because it is a different design.
They tried, while not everyone is happy, a lot are very contented.
I see it the other way, the lack of adherence required to any particular real world design should have given them more freedom to create something cool, or at least complete (gappy thighs for the bottom car carrier deck anyone?). Instead they kind of took the opportunity to be lazy. Besides it isn't like the trailer is super accurate to either toy or show so they didn't really hit the mark there.
I guess I was expecting something more on par with MP Rodimus. With him we got the toy we all wished G1 roddy was back in the day. With Magnus, while there are one or two cool features, I don't think they've done enough with the design to really wow me. That said, I suppose I should just be grateful that they didn't resort to making him a partsformer:)
Real world car carriers are gappy as all hell though, even on the bottom deck. They have a massive gap running the entire underside inbetween where the cars wheels run. All the gaps are a weight saving exercise. So the gaps in Magnus are actually correct. In fact he doesn't have enough of them :)
To those who voted only if cheap. Just curious,
How cheap were you expecting? I mean, I gotten mine at $165 delievered, this is a huge figure in mp class. Sure I bought Metroplex at $124, but how cheap were you willing to pay being the release here is going to be $300.
My only wish was TT should have left it in truck mode in the box. lol
This forces me to transform it like all the mp cars I have. I havent gotten the time to play Magnus and have not transformed him yet.
Yeah but the rails that the car wheels sit on don't look like giant robot thighs do they :p
Also they are generally level ;)
One new thing I do appreciate about Magnus is the solidity of his hands. I sincerely hope this is a sign that the age of fingerfall is well and truly over.
To me the hands are okay, feels like KFC will just keep making them the all perfect fingers like what is done on soundwave and mp10
Being white makes it even easier. The thumb can be made movable without popping off IMO .
Why is UM's gun purple? The toy is white and I only ever remember it being white in the cartoon. And if it was white it would better blend in when attached in alt mode.

I think I read somewhere. but thats why. I am not debating about it. If you ask me personaly, I prefered white black or silver but is based on the cartoon accuracy.
Like has been mentioned, the purple gun is a bit odd. That animation cel Drifand shared is clearly what it's based on but I suspect the animators were trying to make the gun look metallic. It's an art trick, to get certain effects by using colour, rather than an intention to give him a purple gun. The lack of detail in the mould that Lint mentioned is a bit of an issue, and Reprolabels are certain to add a good amount of missing detail, like they did with their MP-10 set. But, as with the MP-10 set, I'm likely to need to shell out a fair bit on money to improve an already expensive toy.
I'm not as concerned about the lack of detail as Lint is, because UM more than makes up for it with his awesome size and genius engineering. It manages to be a solid and gorgeous robot and alt mode*, and the transformation is oh-so-clever - no white Optimus, can entirely transform while cab and trailer are attached while retaining the ability to detatch the cab from the trailer in alt. mode. No way did I imagine the designers would be able to pull that off. Kudos.
The only design flaw I was a bit too disappointed in was some particularly obvious and ugly bits of mould flash, mostly on the front of the firearms and the top of the body around the head. Should be better on a figure that carries the Masterpiece tag.
*The visible "robot thighs" that Lint mentioned are a bit of an issue, but I just imagined someone using this as a selling point for a real car carrier - "It's got visible robot thighs! Cool, hey?";):p
To be frank, if I know nothing about Transformers and I am looking at my display for masterpieces now, Magnus looks to be more like the supreme leader over optimus.
The riffle is again a bit short, but I am used to it.
I just made a collage of about 10 screen shot images of Ultra Magnus from TFTM and the G1 cartoon series showing him holding a lavender rifle... then just as I was about to hit save, my computer crashed. (T-T) Take my word for it (or you can scrawl through TFTM/S3 yourself :p), it's purple in the 'toon. :o
I think if Hasbro USA were to ever release this toy, they should definitely go for a more toy-accurate deco w/ chrome bumper, white gun, lighter blue, shin panels coloured in red etc. :)
Mind you, I do agree that the purple was meant to simulate grey or silver.
Sometimes people go over board being toon accurate rather than follow logic.
Well thats what I actually found out in these forums.
Question is, Hasbro has been toon accurate most of the time, so why would they suddenly do TT's job? Had to ask.
If its anything, this is made Tokyo exclusive and made to G1 Toy colours. As TT does want to have alternate colours to sell anyway?
oh gawd, please don't make a new FIRRIB-like UMRIWUMRIP (Ultra Magnus' Rifle is white Ultra Magnus' rifle is purple) debate! :p </cheek>
Both Hasbro and Takara Tomy switch between different canonical fidelities or even hybridise, depending on the toy. But MP22 is clearly going for toon accuracy.
example of someone who'd prefer a hybrid between show and toon likeness. ;) what colour would you like the eyes to be? Blue like the cartoon & comics, yellow like the G1 box art, or holed or white like the G1 toy? I'd go for yellow.
Come on, who really likes a purple gun? lol
I didn't make a debate on it, as far as I am concerned, you don't like it because of a purple gun then don't buy it, or just show magnus fight bare hands.
As far as debating, its over, the toy is made, don't think a string of arguements will change TT minds at this point.
It becoming quite obvious and maybe a poll should be made,
Do you want your mp
in toon accuracy
in G1 Toy accuracy
Or compromised best of either, up to the designer not what fans think or toon looked.
I would still go with blue, although a face gimmick wouldn't be a bad (or difficult) compromise to make for those who want to choose their preferred.
Different strokes for different folks!
When it comes to non-toy or toon accuracy I generally don't mind the Hasbro design team's choice of decos. I find they have pretty good taste. Problem is the budget constraints often don't really give them much to work with. This is improving in the recent Generations line.
I do. I goes well with the rest of the toon-accurate colours on MP22, and I'm someone who actually prefers toy accuracy over show-accuracy^likeness. But if a toy is going to be show-accurate, then make it as show-accurate as possible. Half-half toy/show accurate toys kinda bug me; I'd much rather it be one or the other.
And hey - it's ULTRA MAGNUS! His motto is "Consistency is victory!" It would be somewhat out of character for him to walk around with a cartoon-accurate body, while wielding a toy-accurate coloured rifle! :D ;) He'd probably have to end up arresting himself for violating the Canonical Cosmetic Adherence Act, and while locking the bars, declare that it was "fully deserved." :p

Or paint it white. ;)
If only TakaraTOMY would make such a poll -- oh wait, they HAVE! Okay, granted it's now geoblocked, but we've had 10 years to submit feedback via these surveys about stuff like this. I'm more miffed over not being able to submit more direct feedback about the more recent MPs, and also not being able to continue voting on and nominating for future characters. But as far as toy/show accuracy? We've had a long time to tell TakTOM about what we think about that.
I'm just posting my MP wishes on TakaraTOMY's FB page now; but no idea if they pay any attention to that. :o
Either way, is beginning to frustrate people wish for either accuracy and I am a bit shocked that there isn't a standard. This way is easy for everyone to collect rather than one wait for the other to happen.
Takara has not bother to add paint apps to the mp-10,
Don't they know that the ko version is looking better?
I know, it is what it is, I am just surprised there isn't a fight for improvements.
Curious...
Great question. You should ask them.
Masterpiece MP-22 Ultra Magnus
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKO-eMIuol4
It's Mother F'N ULTRA MAGNUS! Whoa! Takara have hit this release way out of the park, with an awesomely accurate and badass Masterpiece of the City commander himself; Ultra Magnus.
As I write this, I have just received both Masterpiece Ultra Magnus and Masterpiece Bumblebee (Bumble). Both releases are incredible (more coverage on bumble soon). Magnus is a massive beefcake of beefynus, he hits the animation model perfectly with many improvements of course.
With both complex and quite simple engineering incorporated, magnus is quite intuitive to transform to and from both modes, the cab transformation may give you a little grief initially but then its a piece of cake. The biggest things to watch whilst transforming are to be careful when rotating the smoke stacks. But the biggest thing to be very careful and mindful is transforming the pelvis plate back and forth as it easily is stressed and in some instances it has broken on copies of the toy. My advice is applying even and gradual pressure whiles rotating the joint as close to the hinge as possible. Stress marks may still appear but it should help in the long run. One tip is leave the plate in its robot mode position permanently as it doesn't overly affect the overall aesthetics. See the tutorial video below:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6o7-K1Rd9w
Overall articulation is great considering how big and blocky Magnus is, the only thing he is really 'missing' is a waist rotation but that is really nit picking. Also with big slabs or diecast for his feet, Magnus is ULTRA stable. See what I did there haha. In truck mode, the car carrier is fully functional just the its G1 predecessor as well as a detachable cab with spots for Spike and Daniel to ride along. The carrier mode is capable of carrying four masterpiece cars (with the exception of hotrod/rodimus) or similar sized transformers.
One let down of a figure of this kind and price is the visible sprue marks in various place of Magnus body, most egregious being on his forearms. It may have been unavoidable but I wish more care was taken in removing them from the injection moulded sprue.
Overall Ultra Magnus is an A1 release and well worth picking up. I personally thing at a sub $200 price tag, he is great value for your dollars.

Believe it or not, I enjoyed transforming him over mp-10 prime.
I got mine today and I love it :) I never owned an old Ultra Magnus, the only one I have is the Fall Of Cybertron version and I haven't even taken it off the card yet.
I haven't had much time to play with it much, just transformed it once from robot to car carrier which was enjoyable but slightly fiddly at the same time. nothing too bad though.
I'm not sure where people are getting the 'bland' from, he's got sculpted detail all along the sides and back?
I will agree on a couple of perhaps 'missed opportunities' in that the arms don't quite get down to the lower level of the trailer and that the cab/trailer aren't interact-able with the MP-10 cab/trailer.
other than that though I love it, he's huge! :)
This figure is fantastic and is a awesome masterpiece addition to the line.
thank you for the detailed pictures :D
I really hope Takara/Tomy produce Galvatron and Cyclonus.
cheers to all
As predicted, Reprolabels has released a rather large add-on set which enhances UM substantially. At $22USD a pop, it is a fairly high price for a set of stickers for what is an already expensive toy, but well worth it in my view.

nice figure, will have to pick one up, cheers for the review
Finally got this guy at TrU. Looks amazing on the shelf. As with all my MP's he'll probably never get transformed as I just find the experience too stressful!
My only small gripe (apart from the sprue marks) are the white shin panels. They are meant to sit in front of the blue tabs on the lower legs but in that position they are quite loose. I'd prefer to tuck them behind the tabs as a few others have demonstrated in photos. Any downside to doing this? It makes them super tight but I don't wanna stress the panels by tucking them behind the blue tabs.
Cheers.
