It depends. Original G1 characters like Ramjet, Thrust and Dirge should be regular releases whereas more obscure characters like Road Rage should've been a limited exclusive.

Exactly. As it happens, I believe Road Rage is shelf warming and massively discounted. And for Thrust who is a significant character (selling at a high price too!) who appears in the cartoons and movie, we're getting a limited run. There just seems to be limited consistency in their business model.
The Hasbro HK units are never known but seems to be much larger than the Japanese production run.
Ah ok then. In that case, anyone know how Ramjet ended up in terms of availability / production numbers, notwithstanding product recalls? He was also a 2000 piece TT mall exclusive and if it wasn't for OTCA members I would have been unlikely to have nabbed him without paying something exorbitant.
I completely understand most of those points you make, except for this one:
"Now consider the fact that Ramjet is a limited exclusive, with a small production run of only 2000 figures made. Economies of scale drives the price up."
Now I can only go on my own thinking but that is a choice made by TT to limit production. I absolutely think he should be a regular non-limited release, especially compared to others like Road Rage and Loud Pedal. This hurts TT because they miss out on more sales and they don't get a cent from overpriced ebay/secondary market sales due to the 'rarity' they caused and hurts fans/collectors at the same time.
bbts has a preorder up also... I have ordered just incase I miss PC tonight
It seems to me that the grey on the wings of the toy is actually a bit darker than in that screencap, but it seems so much lighter because it contrasts against the black on the fuselage/torso. The animation model was a dark grey, not really black, so the contrast between the wings and the torso wasn't as great. The grey background for the toy could have something to do with the way we see it, as well.
Those of us who are pre-ordering these exclusive toys and paying premium prices are gonna feel miffed if HasTak ever releases them as regular mass retail store releases. The same thing happened previously with:
- Classicsverse Thundercracker, Thrust and Dirge. Many fans got the BotCon exclusives or exclusive Gentei figures for about $50 a figure. Since then they've all been released at regular retail for as cheap as $20 here.
- MP Sunstorm. I paid 13650JPY ($175) when I initially pre-ordered it. It shelf warmed and was later severely reduced in price, then Hasbro released their own mass retail version here for about $130 IIRC
I would be happy for the majority of fans as it makes these characters more accessible, and they SHOULD be done as mass retail figures in the first place. I even bought a Generations Thrust despite having Gentei Thrust just to show my support to Hasbro for making the decision to release that toy as a mass retail figure (which I then gave away in a competition (Sky Shadow won it)). I'm not rich enough to be so generous with MPs though. :p
Hasbro quality doesn't match TT for me.
And TT is not fantastic lately for seekers
Ordered from RK!
Yeah, the contrast of the the two colours in the 'toon shot isn't as jarring as the toy one, that said, the colours in this shot don't look too bad (but it does seem photoshopped though):

PC's listing is up:

AU$195.
Wow, so quick for Pre-orders. Should I click in enough time I may use my PC loyalty points, if I work out how to do that...
yeah i know...it seems strange, but i guess there is a finite number of these and you can never be sure that hasbro will do it or that TT will do it again in a wider release. My MP Ramjet cost $260 AU so assuming if premium collectables will have it cheaper it may make it easier for me to decide.
I totally agree that Takara should be making these season 2 Seekers mass releases. But given they are not, how long must one wait for these to be released by Hasbro? And if they don't issue them? Better to pre order now than buy at double or triple the price.
Hasbro still hasn't released MP Sideswipe. I don't think they are super committed to the Masterpiece line, they just seem to be picking and choosing. And I doubt that these second tier Seeker characters are going to be at the top of their list to release.
Sunstorm isn't the best example. The Hasbro release is very different to the Takara one. Collectors seem to greatly prefer the Takara deco.
Woohoo... ordered :D

Just pre-ordered via PC w/ Energon points spent for a little discount. :)
Managed to score one too.
I may have missed Ramjet pre-orders but i certainly didn't make that mistake again.. He locked in.. Woo hoo
Like with Ramjet, the way they coloured the top of jet completely wrecks it for me. I hope for a Hasbro Asia release but sho knows if it will look better or worse. :o
I was 48 points short of 1000, now I have them I guess I will use them for Inferno when he comes out.
I am too drunk to redeem energon points... just bought him outright
I like it because G1 Ramjet always had some black on the canopy (depending on continuity/artist). G1 cartoon Ramjet had the most amount of black and we know that TakaraTOMY's MPs tend to favour cartoon accuracy. I suppose you could always paint over it with white paint if it really bugs you that much. :p

And ofcourse I missed out.
It was sold out in 10 minutes... I tried at 840pm and couldn't snap one up.
