How could I forget about Seven Samurai from the director that made a big impact on George Lucas.
So I saw Magnificent Seven yesterday evening.
WINS
+ Film is at its best when it focuses on the witty interplay between the characters. It should have done this more.
+ Intense kinetic action sequences.
ON THE FENCE/YOUR MILEAGE MAY VARY
> Chris Pratt plays Chris Pratt. Again.
> Some of the Seven don't get that much screen time. Best comparison is to Ocean's Eleven, and how some of the Eleven characters didn't get many minutes.
LOSSES
- The film isn't very good when it strays off the path of 'ensemble cast/action film'. There are bits where it tries to show dramatic depth, like the opening few scenes, and it just doesn't work.
- In following the above point, the film sets up and then squanders, doesn't develop or entirely forgets and drops potentially interesting character arcs for several characters, notably those played by Ethan Hawke and Chris Pratt.
It was average good. More or less what you'd expect. Solid six and a half out of ten. Popcorn fun. A basic action shooter where Chris Pratt tells jokes and Denzel is a badass.
Just watched X-Men Apocalypse, can't say it was their best effort. Was very slow for the first hour or so and I also wasn't a big fan of the Apocalypse characterisation. Still nice to see the main X-Men characters like Cyclops and Jean develop their powers. I would give it a 6/10.
Someone that deserves a mention for his part in The Magnificent 7 is Peter Sarsgaard as Bartholomew Bogue. He showed in Ant Man that he knows how to play the vile capitalist psychopath and he does it again for a wild west setting.
Just watched Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders. Great stuff. I really hope that Hoyts plays more and more special screenings like this. I saw Killing Joke at the cinema, now this. It's fantastic.
Also saw new trailer for Lego Batman and holy hole in a donut it looks like it will be great
Don't forget the Star Wars Clone Wars episode "Bounty Hunters," which is basically the story of the Seven Samurai compacted into a 25 min cartoon episode. It's actually a really nice (if not heavily abridged) version of the story that gets across the main gist of the tale. :) The episode was dedicated to the memory of Kurosawa Akira too.

I recently rented a movie from a DVD vending machine ("kiosk") last week and the film was a new release. It was the first time that I'd ever done that, as my previous suburb has (had?) a Blockbuster that we still rented from, but my current residence doesn't have one. It was significantly cheaper than renting from a rental store (less than half the price!).
The film that I rented was a new release - it was actually something that my wife wanted to watch so I just selected that movie and rented it and didn't do any other browsing. But here's my question to those of you who may be more experienced at renting from automated kiosks -- do they also rent out old weekly titles or are they all overnight new releases? Cos uh, yeah... I do occasionally like to watch old titles that I don't own (nor do I want to purchase).
I've used the Hoyts Kiosks a lot. There's no "weekly" titles at the Hoyts one, they are all overnight, but the older titles can be cheaper. Hoyts do a $1 deal on older ones. Browse the Genre "$1 rentals" here.
The age of DVDs will vary but there's usually not a very long history past 12 months. Sometimes older movies are added when there's something new out, like I saw the first Avengers DVD added back around the time Avengers 2 was in cinemas.
The last time I went to a DVD rental place, I was looking for some good old 80s action movie. IN particular The Running Man. I went to the same store that when it had VHS had pretty much every movie in existence. It was truly a great place.
Then the DVDs came and their selection dropped dramatically. They didn't have the Running man, nor did any of the other stores in he area. That made me very sad and slightly annoyed.
The Running Man is great. I own it on blu ray. Some great one liners
Shin Godzilla tho
Shin Godzilla, easily one of the best. Glad to see it in cinemas!
Nope. That American Godzilla is getting a sequel in 2019, and will appear again the following year to battle King Kong.
This one, Shin Godzilla, is a Japanese production, and a reboot.
There is also an upcoming Japanese animated Godzilla film in the works; not sure whether it's in continuity with any existing Godzilla fiction.
I had no idea Shin Godzilla is now screening locally; might go watch it on the weekend after positive reviews here and elsewhere.
Watched a film called Time Lapse (2014) recently, it's refreshing to watch a decent thriller sci-fi and moreso something that isn't a sequel, remake or have terrible big budget studio influences (like incessant product placement).
To be fair, it's not completely original (what is these days?) and is inspired by an episode of the Twilight Zone.
The "Let Them Fight" Godzilla film did have at least two Transformers voice actors in it though (unless there were more that I didn't notice). ;)
Doctor Strange. Great movie though maybe a bit too magical for some?
Just finished watching Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders and give the makers a cigar for effort but nothing beats the 60's series.:)
Anyway, today I'll be off to watch Dr. Strange.:D
The current season of Agents of SHIELD focuses on the magical theme that shows up in the current movies like Doctor Strange, to better explain it, and introducing the Ghost Rider as an example to explore... which I'm finding more interesting than the last season.
Then again, Mystical is similar to Magical, and the Infinity Stones are very mystical, in that they are powerful, god-like elements, that shouldn't physically exist.
Watched the 2016 Ghostbusters movie yesterday.
Wasn't bad. Wasn't good, but was nowhere near as bad as I thought it was going to be. However, it didn't quite have the same level of nerdiness the first one had and some of the feeling was lost a little. It's kinda hard to put a finger on.
It was silly, but the wrong type of silly I think.
I actually didn't like Doctor Strange at all. It was a bit slow, all the medical scenes were just gross (as opposed to Deadpool that was gruesome funny) and an inanimate object stole the show as best supporting role in the film.
It also seemed very rushed to wrap itself up at the end.
I didn't have high expectations to start with but it struggle to reach that for me.
Interestingly my husband (who isn't a fan of magical movies) quite liked it for the humour aspect (again stolen by the supporting role of an inanimate object).
Cumberbun, sorry- Cumberbatch's American accent made me think of House. Also if you've watched Venture Bros you kind of expect Doctor Strange to sound like Doctor Orpheus...
Fantastical Beasts, great movie though to me it felt they rushed from point to point at times. And the ending I didnt like with a charatcer
Cap Murrica 3: Disagreement into scuffle
Superbland, very poorly executed narrative.
Couple of good things like that one ant-man bit and black panther. But anything to do with the core of the conflict wasn't very good.
Spider-man was ok but really loses some of his personality when almost every marvel hero is a quip machine. GCI Spidey suit looked horrible, better get a real suit for his movie :/
5/10
Fantastic Beasts
Another dud, I'm not on a roll with the big releases right now. Anytime the movie focused on the actual beasts the film ground to a halt for a boring set-piece. Anything that was interesting, like the new Salem stuff was sorely lacking and made the villain/s very flat. 3rd act was terrible in the most generic blockbuster way, mindless spectacle destruction from a plume of smoke. Bah
5/10
Fantastic Beasts - What an utter delight! I enjoyed most apsects, all I could've asked for was a little more about Newt himself, a little more of history, which is upsetting as he wont be the sole focus moving forward.
The scene's inside his suitcase with all the differing habitats was beautiful and shows that Yates has great understanding of the Wizarding Worlds, and showed 1920's New York a bit more polished than it should be, but still looked good.
The whole death sentence thing I felt was Yates and Rowling showing a contrast between just how different the worlds are, and Newt's little comments on slavery were great!
