To be honest, I don't know why they are there, and do agree that they look intentional (but never noticed it before now). It'd be interesting if they were meant to plug into something, but later dropped during the design stages.

Wiki/wikias/wikipeadia can be an objective, reliable source if it references its content (most do at the bottom of the page). You just have to check its sources, like you would with any printed publication. As for reissues, two sites I would recommend would be Autobase Aichi (only lists Takara(TOMY) reissues but is very comprehensive) and TFArchive (lists both Hasbro and Takara reissues but not quite as comprehensive as Autobase Aichi).

alright so i want to buy a mp prime soon, but after reading all the QC problems i was wondering if:
a) its better to get a mp01 and the unliscenced trailer
b)get an mp04 from overseas
c)find an mp04 here somwhere...
any other suggestions?

The unlicensed trailer doesn't transform so while it looks fine in truck mode, it doesn't have that extra G1 touch that the MP04 trailer does.
However Demonac is selling Optimus Prime and the unlicensed trailer (although in that case Prime is the Hasbro version not the Takara Masterpiece one)

classic/henkei/universe megs don't look like a real/replica of any weapon... so there should be no problems with customs
Mate, they're not gonna seize your Classics/Henkei Megs :) (It's a freakin' nerfgun... :D)
And it's packaged in robot mode, making it easier to get through, even if it was classed as being close enough to looking like a weapon for Hasbro US to give it bright colours...

Henkei Megatron - risky. It's technically classified as a prohibited replica like MP05, Encore etc.
