Loved GotG2, arguably better than the first. Has tons of heart and knew not to pull its punches when it mattered.
I dread the day GotG is dragged into the mire of the mainline Marvel flicks.

Speaking of which, I finally got around to seeing Dr Strange the other day.
Not terrible by any means, but not all that great either. I must admit, for a relatively unknown character to be given a film, it was quite daring and I did like the way they did it. I guess, I was most disappointed because it ended up being exactly like I though it would be.
Standard movie.
I liked Dr. Strange. It wasn't the best but it didn't suck like the Fantastic Four Movies or Green Lantern. ;) I think a lot of times studios make these movies simply to maintain their legal ownership of these properties. But at least Marvel Studios keeps them in continuity, whereas some other studios reboot properties like Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four just to keep the rights. Although Fox did at least handle their rebooting of X-Men pretty well in terms of using time travel. It may be cheesy but it works. :)
And it's cool that Sony finally joined the party and have agreed to share the cinematic rights to Spider-Man (and kudos to Universal Pictures for being the first to do this back when they chose to share the rights to the Hulk). And it's nice that Fox have shared Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, but with greater restrictions than Universal or Sony seem to have placed on Marvel (MCU cannot use their mutant names or even the word "mutant") - their origin stories were also completely changed. While the MCU couldn't make direct references to Universal's Hulk movies or Sony's Spider-Man films, they were still able to use their names and didn't have to change their origins. Hulk isn't an alien and Spider-Man isn'ta mutant^an enhanced.
I would love to see Fox sharing their rights to the X-Men with the MCU. It would also allow Fox-Marvel Studios to make a "clean start" for a new actor as Wolverine since:
a/ Hugh Jackman has announced that he has retired from playing Wolverine
b/ Cinema audiences are already used to actors changing when characters are absorbed into the MCU - e.g. Quicksilver, Colossus, Bruce Banner, Peter Parker, Aunt May etc. - heck, they even changed the actor for War Machine and he never even changed studios! :p James Rhodes was played by Terrence Howard in the first Iron Man, but replaced by Don Cheadle from Iron Man 2 onwards. People will initially whinge but eventually shut up and get used to it. ;)
Saw Alien Covenant on the weekend and it is definitely a better and more disturbing affair than Prometheus.
Why did Director Krennic land his ship 800 kms away from the Erso farmstead and decide to walk over?
I think that Krennic was initially playing Good Cop. He wanted to invite Erso and his family back into the service of the Empire. He wanted to give them the chance to come along willingly, and understandably so because a willing ally is always preferable. The conversation between Krennic and Erso was fairly civil until Mrs. Erso pulled a blaster on Krennic, then all niceties were dropped.
Women, eh? :p
Still doesn't explain why he landed where he did though.
For the incidental exercise? :p
Saw John Wick 2 not long ago. Mindless action but done so unbelievably well. It looks like all that training done for the Matrix trilogy is continuing to pay off for Keanu.
Ok so I have managed to drop in and watch a couple of flicks over the last couple of weeks and thought I might share a few thoughts on them
Ghost in the Shell
Never seen the Anime so basically went blind into this one. Was a cool flick, enjoyed the opening sequence, good visual effects. Didn’t think there was anything really ground breaking or mind bending story wise, though it was certainly entertaining and liked the atmosphere of it all. I’d watch it again and probably pick it up on Blu-Ray when it comes out.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2
I went into the first one blind and was completely surprised at what an awesome movie it turned out to be. Have to say this one follows in the same footsteps. I watched this one in 3D and from the get go I was blown away with the visuals, absolutely stunning looking movie. If you liked the first one you shouldn’t be disappointed with this one. An enjoyable ride.
Alien Covenant
I’m a fan of the Alien franchise, have been looking forward to seeing what Ridley would add after all the questions Prometheus raised. Before watching it I thought I might warm myself up by going over a bit of the back catalogue, watching Alien (what a movie!), Aliens (what a sequel!) and Prometheus again over the days leading up to its release. Story takes off from basically where Prometheus ended. Movie has a good pace and is more of a horror/thriller monster ride than anything else. If you’re expecting answers or mind bending twists, you won’t get much in that department and the scientific crew still comes from the same academy that those in Prometheus did, but I still think it was a good addition to the franchise, I enjoyed the thrills and visuals which Ridley obviously has a knack for and am keen to watch it again when it comes out on Blu-ray.
King Arthur Legend of the Sword
After seeing the trailers for this I can’t say I was overly enthusiastic about watching this one, but I was intrigued to see what Guy Ritchie could produce in this type of genre. I must admit I am more than surprised on how it turned out. If you’re a fan of Guy Ritchie’s story telling style, then this one delivers in that department. If you’re expecting a re-make of Excalibur, or like a historical take on the story, you will be disappointed, this is not that movie. Its at its core a medieval fantasy (knights and magicians/magic), which the story of King Arthur basically is, with it drawing a bit more from the fantasy side of things then what most are used to from the Arthur legend, with a bit of “Rock ‘n’ Roll” flavour added in there. It seems to be pretty different from the story I’m used to, but it still incorporates most of the main themes as well as a bit of historical context, so if you’re a traditionalist, you will likely be irked in that respect. Also I’d have to say the visual effects looked more video game inspired however the score was executed pretty good. Having said all that, personally, and quite surprisingly, I rather enjoyed it, I thought it was a good / fresh take on the story which was told in a unique way. It was definitely entertaining and I’d be keen to watch a sequel if one ever eventuates. I think the initial critic reviews have been unnecessarily harsh in this instance (taken form a view of comparisons instead of evaluating on its own merit) and for those who don’t mind the medieval fantasy genre (Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, etc) I would definitely recommend giving it a go. There’s more of a movie in there than what the trailers make out.
Thanks Meister for clearing up the bull$*%# surrounding King Arthur, caused by (as usual) jaded and desensitized reviewers. This weekend, I'll try to check it out.:)
Wonder Woman. Great. No stuff after credits start rolling
It's hard to argue about the historical accuracy of Arthurian legends considering that it's predominantly fictitious. :o At most one might scrutinise the historical period accuracy (e.g. fashion, technology, customs etc.), but not in terms of actual characters and events. And obviously one would suspend disbelief for all the sorcery and what not. ;)
It's true what they say. We all float down here, and you will, too.
I find that the expectations someone brings with them into a movie tends to influence their actual experience of it, and everyone's expectations can vary in a lot of ways, so basically just trying to cover off some possibly common expectations to provide anyone interested with a bit of perspective of what they could be in for (without really giving anything away). I personally think reviews that go into anything more than that should really be left for spoiler threads
I cant wait.
Going to surprise the mrs with tickets & not tell her what we're watching. I'll pretend it's some sappy rom-com :D
Saw Wonder Woman. Really enjoyed it. :)
SPOILERS AHEAD
I like how this movie had a blend of bright colours in the scenes on Themyscira, then switching the the darker tones of WWI.
Things that I particularly liked:
* The action sequences, especially the Amazons -- phwoar!
* The way that Wonder Woman's powers gradually develop
* The true identity of the core protagonist. Did not see that coming.
* Diana's innocence being used as a mirror to reflect our humanity, particularly in showcasing attitudes on gender and racial issues.
* Actually explaining why the hell the Amazons speak English! Nice!
Small gripes:
* "That conversation" on the boat was completely unnecessary. Still, nowhere near as creepy as "that scene" from Age of Extinction - importantly it didn't occupy an entire scene (and Diana isn't a freakin' minor!).
* The hotel room scene. Again, unnecessary and doesn't really advance the plot line. They already establish Steve and Diana's feelings in other scenes, especially in the scene when Steve gives Diana his watch. The Empire Strikes Back was able to establish the fact that Han and Leia loved each other without needing to resort to this. But again, at least it was a fairly short moment in the film and all very suggestive.
I watched one video which criticised Wonder Woman's costume for having a skirt and claiming that Wonder Woman should never wear a skirt. Either super-short tights or super-tight pants. It's not a freakin' skirt, it's a leather-strip armour that the Greeks and Romans wore known as Pteruges! I quite like how Wonder Woman's costume is actually meant to be a piece of Amazonian light armour.
Just like she does in the movie, Wonder Woman is kicking all kinds of arse at the box office
Wonder Woman has very easily kicked the arse of Batman vs Superman. Which bodes well for the upcoming Justice League movie in November.:D
...although Justice League is mostly directed by Zack Snyder, so I dunno. But on the other hand, Joss Whedon is now doing reshoots, post-production and final editing, so it'll be interesting to see what he brings. Also, Snyder's directing of Superman may be different in a film without Superman, as the main problem with his Superman directing is his lack of understanding of the character.
Although the circumstances as to why Snyder had to hand over the directing helm to Whedon is truly tragic. No matter what any of us think about him as a director, as a fellow human being my heart breaks for him and his family. :(
Superman will appear in Justice League I reckon anyway
Snyder's dark tone and characterisation might suit a newly resurrected Superman, as he wears that black suit and wouldn't be his usual chipper self. Problem is that Snyder's Superman has always been so dark and sullen that you'd barely be able to tell the difference. :p
Also enjoyed Wonder Woman, it felt like its own film separate in tone from the other DC universe movies and Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Overall I really enjoyed Wonder Woman. The only part I was fussed on was the ending. It felt kinda cheesy to me and the special effects with the lightning looked kinda dated to me.
Eh, no more cheesy than smiling at the camera as you fly off towards the Sun. :p
Watching Wonder Woman today in Gold Class (my first time) with my wife was truly a wonderous experience!
How good is it?!
Glad to read that you enjoyed it :)
Having a bar on site definitely adds to the experience. I'll give it a week from release & drag the Mrs along for TF5. At least there will be alcohol & a nice comfy recliner for her while I stuff my face :p
Went to see Wonder Woman a second time. A well made movie indeed.
Finally rented & watched The Great Wall.
Positives:
+ Visually stunning, especially in the vibrancy of colours (Zack Snyder could learn from this).
+ The "white saviour" role thing wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be.
Negatives:
- Story ranges between being average to absurd.
- Visual effects and action scenes are underwhelming.
Overall: "Meh."
The visual effects had me thinking "Seen it all before." But one thing I'd never seen before was the impressive battle involving the two towers at the end.
P.S. I like the oriental scroll work on the creatures hides. It reminds me of certain monsters from the Final Fantasy games.
