Yeah, I'd much rather a DVD release (besides, I kinda find it funky watching the German dubs :p). Still, having it on disc is better than nothing at all. :(
I'll have to find out who the equivalent AUS company is for the TFs DVD license, if Paramount AUS no longer has it as well as Paramount US.
Even if Paramount AUS is still allowed to release DVDs in the absence of a new license holder, I can't see them getting all the way through the Animated series. I think they got up to episode 24 (six volumes so far released), leaving about 20 more to go (another 5 volumes).
It is better from a technical point of view and flexibility.
They are DVD quality yet you can fit the whole series in less than a disc and a half with like 20+ episodes on a single disc due to more optimized formating. The DVD format (VOB) is bloated and would only be able to fit a few episodes per disc.
Secondly, it can play on anything since the format is pretty universal. It can play on your DVD player, on your PC, Ipod, mobile phone, DS, whatever.
Unlike VOBs (DVDs) I can start playing the episode I want in a second without having to go through menus, notices and other crap.
If I want to make a copy of just an episode for a friend, it's just a simple 'copy & Paste' to any device than going through transcoding, disc copying, ripping, etc.
They can easily be uploaded onlile (like Youtube).
For me DVDs are not only very inflexible but cumbersome and prone to scratching, skipping and other related crap while the AVI can last forever with theoretically infinite views. If you burn it to a disc and then scratch it - Who cares, just burn another.
I would be assuming that an AVI file version would have been taken off the TV though, which would affect the quality, whereas a DVD version would be the best possible picture quality from the start.
I would like the DVD, just to complete my set personally. Its nice to have official version IMO. Even though I guess, since there is no distributor, then no-one can really complain about dling episodes can they?
That is correct to some extent as it also depends on how much compression was used to create the .avi file format.
I have all the episodes from season 3 which I recorded straight from the CN when it was aired in Australia last year.
As I wanted to create my own DVD boxset (keeping them as .vob files), I had to use slight compression in order to fit them onto 2 discs. I also kept the original recordings as the 'master'. The difference between the compressed copy and the original is not noticeable.
My only gripe with .avi files is the inability to create chapters meaning to get to a certain point in the show, you have to skip ahead manually.
As Kup said, it does come in handy when you want to keep all your shows on one disc (data disc).
Yeah they are taken off TV but if it's from an HD digital receiver (as most are now) there isn't any real loss to picture quality.
5FDP is correct that the picture quality does get impacted by the compression used. However most compressions are now very well optimized with almost no loss whatsoever making the AVI of comparable quality to a DVD but with much less space taken and other drawbacks of the *.VOB format.
Which is why I'd prefer an official DVD version of TFA season three as well. It'd be sourced straight from the episodes' masters, allowing for the best possible picture quality.
Any presence of English subtitles for the deaf and hearing impaired would also be another reason for me to prefer an official DVD release over .AVIs. Paramount AU provided such subtitles on their TFA (and Beast Machines) DVDs, which I found very helpful.
