Gentlemen & a Scholar, thanks Hursty!!
 at how bad the movie really is!
Anyone seen Prometheus yet? I was really looking forward to this one and I came away quite disappointed. :( I seriously didn't like the direction they took with the (briefly masterful) Alien series.
I can't really go into it without entering spoiler territory but rather than focus on the good stuff, I felt we got a cringe-worthy story about the origins of mankind with the Alien universe seemingly tacked on. Seriously, why did they have to even bring the Alien universe into it? It could have been a movie that stood on its own legs ala Event Horizon, Sunshine or District 9 but no! As is, the whole concept feels incredibly forced and things I adored about the first couple of films (especially the Alien pilot, one of my favourite HR Giger pieces) now feel somewhat cheapened.
I think the biggest problem is definitely with the script though. The movie could have actually been quite amazing. For starters, did anyone give a damn about any of the characters bar David? Personally I couldn't wait for them to all perish! Aside from the totally undeveloped, cannon-fodder generics (one is particularly laughable and made me think of Benjamin Button), the amount of things that go unexplained, the stupid things the characters do, the totally unrealistic things that happen (the best scene in the movie is also the most laughable), the cliche scares with zero suspense...It's so frustrating!!
There were a number of viral videos which were really quite amazing and setup the story quite well. None of these were featured in the film which is fair enough (I suppose?) but for those that hadn't seen them, the film will lack even more coherence. Why didn't they at least put the freakin' Weyland speech in there??
When it comes down to it, Prometheus is a Jurassic Park ripoff with the dinosaurs replaced by the Borg from Star Trek. If that floats your boat then you'll no doubt love it. :p
There is not an emoticon that can justify how poor this movie is... and it's getting a sequel:eek:
Yeah it's not just the special effects the acting is some of the worst I have ever seen. My year 10 high school production had better acting. I played Benvolio... I still think we should of sued Baz Luhrmann as we did a modern adaption a 2years before his movie came out. He totally stole a copy of video made and copied it... I swear.
Went and saw Prometheus. I really liked the film. It is a "F**k You" movie though.
To sum it up (No spoilers) it is pretty much:
- These are some people.
- This is what they want to do.
- This is where they go.
- This is what happens.
- This is the end.
Don't like the ending? Well F**k you.
Wanted a happier ending? Well F**k you.
Wanted more or less closure? F**k you.
It leaves you sort of thinking what was the point of it all. But the point really ends up being that life is harsh, bad things do happen. But it really comes down to what you make of it all.
Just watched Prometheus. i've been looking forward to this movie for a while now. Anyone who is familiar with H.R. Giger's work will instantly recognize some more of his artworks brought to life.
I was under the impression this was meant to be the alien prequel . The way i see it is, its a pre prequel or a pre pre prequel.. looking forward to another or 2 to tie it all together.......hopefully
i still rate it. 5 stars. item arrived exactly as described!. *****
or 9.5. but i'm most likely biased
Just saw Prometheus and I thought it was interesting. I would probably watch it again only if I could listen to Ridley Scott's commentary in explaining what the hell was going on.
I watched Prometheus yesterday. The movie didn't meet my expectations, but I wasn't disappointed. How is that? I enjoy the sci fi genre and anything is good, and this one asked alot of questions but really dosen't answer them. But it works to the movies favor, to keep mystery and its fun to speculate. This movie is almost like a teaser, which should of covered more, and will lead into a sequel no doubt. It was planned like this.
My expectations, was suspense and terror. It has none. People die is an obvious predictable fashion.
I didn't really like the final scenes, gah! that could of been saved for a sequel, and we could of had something else instead.
maybe towards the end i would have done a few things differently (but i didn't come up with the trillion dollars to make it:p) for me it only had to answer one question that has annoyed me for fifteen years . and it did more or less. of coarse now i have more questions, but they're new questions so i can wait a bit..
If you are going to go and watch it i would recommend putting yourself through the original 1978 Alien movie 1st. and maybe aliens special edition:)
I loved Promethues, a really well-done movie but I hate Dr. Elizabeth Shaw, such an annoying character. I loved Vickers and David though as I could relate to them so much more than the others. The story was told in a respecting manner, not spoon-feeding the audience but leaving it up to the viewer and their own intellect to comprehend what was going on. Though I felt cheaped out at some points of the film, I always felt intrigued by what I saw on the screen from start-to-finish. Every scene was fascinating and had a purpose. Great film experience, highly worth recommending watching in cinemas.
I do understand some of the points of criticism against this film in previous posts, but my review of this film is based on whether I enjoyed what I saw in the cinemas today, not what I had expected from it due to its connections to the Alien series. The movie does has its flaws of course, but I was entertained by it. A solid 10/10 for me.
10/10? How can you say that about a movie that continually has stuff like this...
[spoilers]
-Staff spend 2 years asleep to use their skill set somewhere far away
-Geologist tells Biologist he's in it for the money, not to make friends
-As soon as the Geologist sees the purpose of them traveling so far (discovering life eg. a 2000 year old corpse) he bails out immedietly (what about the money?)
-The freaking Biologist of all people GOES WITH HIM. Discovery of a lifetime? Whatever dudes!
-Despite having tech that can fully map an interior in 3D, the geologist and biologist get lost. How the **** did this happen? Once again, it doesn't make sense.
-A plot device (sand storm) approaches trapping the two in the cave system.
-The two keep walking around (why would they? Aren't they scared shitless? Wouldn't they stay put until the storm is over and the captain/whoever can direct them out using the 3D map?)
-The two discover an alien species which stands upright in a cobra attack-like stance. Do they a) Take caution and back away b) come up close to give it a hug?[/spoilers]
Just got back from seeing it, I enjoyed the movie a lot. Took most you guys advice, went it with a clear mind, and that helped make the movie better for me.
That said, I'm just going with - it is an Alien prequel. I think.
Ridley Scott mentioned this was movie several movies away from Alien, and I can accept that. I don't think they would have included that last scene if it weren't.
SPOILER
I thought they were an earlier form of xenomorph, a bio-weapon not yet perfected by the Engineers/Space Jockeys. They could have returned to LV-223 to retrieve them, or something similar happened to another Space Jockey crew on terraforming mission on LV-426. David mentioned there were more ships (and took off in one with Elizabeth) , and you'd think perhaps the Engineers would be monitoring the planet.
I liked the explanation for the helmets they wore when in the Engineers pilot seat, though in Alien they appeared to be much larger in size /SPOLIER
Will be thinking about this for a while!

- 2 years asleep to then use skillset on unknown planet? Perhaps lots of money promised to workers? Maybe working with the unknown, making discovery?
- Don't see what's wrong with a geologist making money instead of friends?
- When people realize they made a stupid mistake or in a tight situation they bail out even on money, or simply yet do stupid-er things?
- Biologist was afraid too?
- The mapping and getting lost issue is a flaw. I won't deny that, but it was entertaining to watch them two die because of it.
- Plot device? Is it suddenly illegal to use plot devices in movies?
- The two keep walking around because maybe they didn't stop and think to stay still? Like previous statement how in panicked situations people can do really stupid things?
- The two, you should realize this by now, are just plain stupid?
As I said before, the movie does have its flaws. But so does every other movie, even those considered masterpieces of the cinema. A New Hope, Batman Begins, 12 Angry Men, Citizen Kane - these are some of the movies I gave 10/10 because when I saw them in cinemas I enjoyed the WHOLE experience from start to end. Not because they were 100% realistic and had followed every single logic and did not use plot devices. Again, as said before - I judge movies by whether I enjoyed the overall expereince. My review, my score. If you don't agree, I don't care. It's just my 2 cents on a Transformers forum.
My apologies, if it wasn't obvious my frustration mostly stems from those story aspects I mentioned (and others) when combined. Didn't mean to offend either by the way, was just curious as to why you thought it was a perfect movie but you've explained that by saying how much you enjoyed it.

- 2 years asleep to then use skillset on unknown planet? Perhaps lots of money promised to workers? Maybe working with the unknown, making discovery?
I don't have a problem with this, although if someone could explain to me why Weyland waited until after the 2 years before telling the cannon-fodder, er, I mean "people" why they were there I would be very happy. It's a multi billion dollar operation and they hire people they don't even know will be able to commit when push comes to shove?
- Don't see what's wrong with a geologist making money instead of friends?
I don't have a problem with this either. Although it would have been nice to have some followup. As is it's just a throwaway line.
- When people realize they made a stupid mistake or in a tight situation they bail out even on money, or simply yet do stupid-er things?
Correct. Not convinced in this case given the sacrifices they've made (4 years gone to and from Earth) but oh well. For a top tier intelligent Geologist (they're not idiots by nature) he's not exactly the brightest gem.
- Biologist was afraid too?
He sure was! I guess checking their staffs mental fortitude was outside of the multi billion dollar budget!
- The mapping and getting lost issue is a flaw. I won't deny that, but it was entertaining to watch them two die because of it.
At least those pup things (I think that's what they were called) were pretty cool. Probably my favourite part of the film was seeing those dart around and map the caves in 3D.
- Plot device? Is it suddenly illegal to use plot devices in movies?
No, this one was very convenient but eh. Like you say those two needed to die and ASAP.
- The two keep walking around because maybe they didn't stop and think to stay still? Like previous statement how in panicked situations people can do really stupid things?
Hey, they're not the only stupid ones. The moron captain and his goons on deck were all too happy to just let them wonder around and take in the sights.
- The two, you should realize this by now, are just plain stupid?
Yeah, unfortunately to the point where it became comedic and ultimately took me out of the experience.
[/SPOILERS]
I enjoyed Prometheus. Visual effects were sensational, atmosphere was deeply immersing and I felt the character portayals were quite good. The screenplay was lacking though, which some of the actors suffered on.
I wasn't satisfied with the whole (spoiler) "ah so that's the origin of the Aliens" thing though. Regardless, I give it a 4/5.
Vickers and David are portrayed as cold, calculating assholes. No offence, but I don't see how anyone could relate to those characters.
Doubledealer, you need to go and watch Alien Resurrection again then you'll appreciate the lighter characters in Prometheus!
and for goodness sake, if the giant alien donut spaceship is rolling toward you, why run in the same direction as it? This epic scene is in the trailer too. RUN SIDEWAYS!
LOL
*SPOILERS*
I didn't see them in that light, I saw Vickers as a character with a hard-skin raised by the truly cold Peter Weyland. She did what she was thought was the safest for her and her crew, even if it meant denying Shaw the opportunity to save Holloway who understandably could have been the carrier of a contagious threat. Yes she is cold, yes she may be a calculating a-hole but she has common sense and isn't so naive and let her emotions control her like Shaw. That's a trait that I admire with that character. As for David, there's the admirable loyalty that he has to Weyland. Sure he was antagonistic but he was programmed to be, how could he know better? I thought there was MUCH MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE to these characters.
OH YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
[SPOILERS]
Did we really learn anything about ye olde Xenomorphs at all? I was so confused about this at the end!
Someone step in and correct me if I'm wrong but this is what I can remember:
-We're on a totally different planet to the other Alien movies
-David infects Charlie with the black goop
-Charlie has sexy taime with Liz
-Liz "births" a squid thing
-Squid thing gets big and French kisses the remaining Engineer
-Engineer dies and gives birth to a poorly designed Xenomorph
Is that right? That's what I got from it anyway. Which is kind of confusing and retarded because I thought Xenomorphs were born from Facehuggers, not squids. :(
[/SPOILERS]
Kurdt, I had blocked that movie from my mind but maybe I should watch it again to see how it compares. :p
spoiler
Birthing a squid thing was a bit out of whack because it's ultimately a face hugger of sorts. It was a bio weapon that the engineers were making and it reminded me of a t-virus set up (where pretty much anything can happen through mutation)
I would've liked to see what charlie was turning into??
I thought the initial worms could be mutated mealy worms which were present at the start.
I couldn't get over actors that feature in the IT Crowd. Hot Fuzz and Green Wing (not a major)
i didn't think 3 needed to die in the collision scene. ( nice if they had a gun )
and vicars could have run sideways.
I thought it could be possible that vicars is actually a prototype robot and not know it..
i mean, daddy looks 250 years old
it makes sense that robots (especially some of the first) are programmed to serve their maker, whether it's for the good of mankind or not. (Ash was the same)
The main thing i learned from this movie is that i'm not equipped to deal with emergency C-sections..... Giving birth = don't call me..
still, i'll be buying a hard copy
[SHPOILA]

Yeah it's a bit confusing isn't it. I mean it does the exact same thing as a Facehugger (impregnates a host to birth a Xenomorph) but in this case, it's a continually growing squid monster.
I would've liked to see what charlie was turning into??
Poor bloke didn't get very far did he. Although damn he has a high pain threshold! *body starts to go black and convulse* "Ima okay Lizzy baby, it's just a flesh wound!" :p
i didn't think 3 needed to die in the collision scene. ( nice if they had a gun )
Hang on, which scene was this again? Is this the one where the Geo takes a thousand bullets while on his rampage?
I thought it could be possible that vicars is actually a prototype robot and not know it..
i mean, daddy looks 250 years old
Ugh, thanks for reminding me about Benjamin Button...*smart dude* "Let's get an old dood to play an old dood!" Riddley Scott: "No way man! Let's get a 45 year old to wear an old man suit!" Smart man: "Can I get a job as one of the people who dies but like can you kill me for real?"
*ahem*
I thought the same thing about Vikars, it would also explain why she seemingly loathes David (as he is quite obviously adored by old man emu). Maybe they'll explain this in the next, hopefully more coherent, pre-post-pre-prequel-sequel.
Spoi,oila!
the scene where they have to wright the ship off, (the best scene i've scene for a while although the wild fire explosion from GOT was f'ing epic)...
with the guy from the Countdown episode ( club 8+, teapot winners) in the IT crowd and the captain +1
As far as getting lost, my brother and GF can't read a map to save their lives.*
they still get lost, even with GPS ???
*(those guys couldn't either.. literally.... to save their lives)
mistakes often occur in these movies. (sunshine springs to mind) Can you imagine if everything went to plan.... Great job guys, Nobody died and the mission went without incident, lets go home.. the end:p ....= i want my money back
i was actually out of the cinema during the rampage.. i had to "get some air" after the operation scene. (getting soft in my old age):)
edit; o.k. maybe the map guy shouldn't have been the one to get lost
^get yer own Alien thread all.. please.
EDIT: i didn't notice the Prometheus discussion was a few days old and had probably already died a natural death by the time i created this post and sorry for sounding like a wannabe-mod.
This is a Movie Critics Thread , critics are free to debate their opinions even if it's about the same movie for x amount of pages.
Well, to change the topic I finally saw the first 2 Superman movies last week.
Superman (Extended Richard Donner Cut) - 1978
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...erman_ver1.jpg
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superman_%28film%29
Note this is the Richard Donner extended cut that was included in the complete DVD collection that I saw. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, all the characters felt real - maybe not Lex Luthor - don't know anyone who goes around claiming they're the world's greatest criminal but I do plenty of egomaniacs ;) The chemistry between Lois and Clark/Superman was naturally blissful, the action scenes still-inspiring despite the age and the soundtrack, is truly heroic. The only things I did not like about this movie, well this cut in particular was the dreamy scene where Lois is doing her poetic monologue as Superman flew her around and well, that was about it. That scene was well-intended I guess but came across as real, real cheesy. The inclusion of the incarceration of General Zod at the beginning of the film was an interesting insight into the life on Krypton. *SPOILERS* However, I am somewhat disturbed that Clark let hundreds of people die just to save Lois by using his time-travel technique. Don't know what I'm talking about ? Check this link: http://www.cracked.com/article_19435...diting_p2.html
Overall I pleasant enjoyed this movie, except for that odd flying scene. A good 9/10 from me.
Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...ddonnercut.jpg
Note that I haven't even seen the original theatrical release of this film yet, just the Richard Donner cut because I heard it was less campy and much darker and more familiar to the first movie. This movie, this cut I should say is good compared to the original. Not as inspiring but it did venture into interesting territory, like *SPOILERS* Lois finding out that Clark is Superman and having our hero face off against 3 villains with the same strength. Perhaps what I loved best was the acting done by the villains, particularly Terrance Stamp who played as General Zod. It was hilarious yet fascinating watching this supreme alien creature mock/pity human weapons and dispose of human resistance so easily and how *again spoilers* his arrogance was what ultimately caused his downfall in the ending of the movie. That was perhaps what I liked best about this movie, I was kind of dissapointed of how Superman was handled though. *Spoilers again* I understand that he wanted to become human so that he could live a normal life with Lois and thus had to give up his powers with red-kryptonite but the fact that Jor-El had a fail-safe to restore his powers in the event Jal-El did give them up did seem like a cheap cop-out. But it was funny seeing Clark get his butt kicked by the Truckie as a human, but then come back as Superman and do his revenge. What I hated most about this movie, and it was of this particular cut was the ending, was when to reverse the problems already caused all Superman does is reverse time AGAIN by spinning the Earth backwards. It just makes any problem on Earth that Superman faces useless as he literally could turn back time anytime anything went wrong.
A 6.5/10 for this sequel. Maybe I should watch the original theatrical release.
IIRC, the time-travel ending was going to be the original ending for Superman II but the powers that be wanted it used for the first movie.
The original theatrical release of Superman II had a different ending that didnt involve time travel.
Snaketales has it right.
They were filming the 2 films back-to-back, but started runing out of money. Originally, nothing bad happens to Lois, so there is no need to reverse time. I guess they wanted a 'big' finish, so they 'borrowed' the ending from part II, and reworked that film later on.
Kinda like how they blew up the Death Star in climax to Star Wars, and again in Return of the Jedi.
Well the spoiler tags stop working pretty quickly, veiled discussions then get elaborated on, and if its going to take x number of pages then why not have a discussion amongst those who have seen the movie?
It worked for The Avengers
Good point, but you gotta admit Avengers in itself is a whole topic worthy of starting another thread for because of the amount of characters of different franchises it has in it. Sure Prometheus could have its own thread as it is a big franchise itself but seeing as the talk about it has died down there is no point for it now, and I doubt there'd be a discussion that warrants much discussion on your average box-office flick like say.. ..er... Immortals? One for the money?
Drive (2011)
Saw this movie last night and WOW, it totally blew me away. It has such a wonderful slow motion dream-like quality to it, such amazing cinematography and the soundtrack!! So, so awesome. Just wish I'd seen this on the big screen, total masterpiece imo. :)
Have this on repeat at the moment.
Saw Ted last night.
Absolutely hilarious, and even sad in some parts. But overall a great film. A great cast of cameos as well.
Prometheus - Did not like it.
No Spoilers in what I have to say so feel free to read.
The movie was very well directed, had reasonably good actors and visually it was impressive but the plot was all over the place, lacked substance plus the character types seemed very 'out of place'.
Since the moment they landed on the planet, almost every scene added to a library of unanswerable questions. I did not understand why they had such 'diverse and colorful' characters in what is basically a scientific mission with a very crucial hidden agenda. I also did not understand how those two scientists got lost despite having two-way communication to base who have a detailed mapped of the terrain. That was a little too convenient and as a result, it predictably and badly sets up the introductory horror scene.
Overall, I did not understand why people who you assume to be at the top of their field and highly qualified given the importance of the mission(s) were so freaking stupid and childish - That alone took me out of the film.
I can go on and on about all the things that didn't make sense in this movie but the most frustrating unanswered question of all was the ending. There was no sense to it whatsoever from a logical point of view.
However, what I mentioned above are not the biggest detractors of this movie -The biggest issue is that it lacked identity. This movie did not know if it wanted to be a completely fresh Sci-Fi Thriller/adventure or an Alien prequel and as a result, it doesn't fit either very well. A lot of the Alien references seemed tacked on as they did not make much sense plot wise, specially when the overall story was so different to what you would expect from an Alien movie. I actually think that this lack of identity probably stems from the political conflict of the film maker wanting a whole new story and the studio demanding it to be an Alien prequel - Trying to amalgamate these two irreconcilable differences within the one film is probably what generated all the plot and character issues - Some of the stupid things the characters do in this movie are beyond ridiculous and killed believability.
On the up side, the movie is not boring and is visually impressive. The character of Dave was very well executed and performed masterfully (plot issues aside) and was the film's highlight. That is really all the good points about this movie as otherwise, it is very forgettable and disappointing if you are a fan of the Alien movies.
This movie could have been awesome but Hollywood politics made sure that it ended up being another forgettable franchise 'Cash-in'. This feels like Terminator: Salvation all over again, a fantastic premise horribly executed.
Prometheus.
Or as Ilike to call it, Ambivalence the movie! I've never been so torn after seeing a movie, I loved it as much as I hated it!
I loved how well it fleshed out the alien universe, loved seeing the Jockey's in action (even if they shrunk a few feet in height since alien), loved David and that scene of David faffing about the ship while everyone was in cryo? Marvellous! However...
I hated the entire human side of the story. Inconsistent characterisation with the biologist was infuriating! Biologist finds corpse of alien species, probably the creator of humanity "Oh noes I is scared! Me no want to see life changing discovery! RUN AWAY!" then later... "Oh some pissed of alien snake/worm? ME WANTS TO HUG YOU!" Urgh. WTF... And it's just not that, it's the tone of the film, this was meant to be a return to horror/thriller? Shame it lacked to specific antagonist so the movie flounders around and has zero tension.
The Squid baby was a good idea that was dealt with too quickly, that should have been a larger focus of the film, don't rush through it, slow down the gestation process, give a glimpse of it, BUILD SOME TENSION! But no, "You are preggers with monster! we want!" "No!" *Runs for emergency caesarian* Seems like a missed opportunity.
And finally, I would have prefered not seeing the deacon, the film had already done a perfect job explaining the Alien origin, it didn't need to be beaten over our heads. But I guess it was for the casual idiot who needed to see some sort of alien to be satisfied. Also, the design of the deacon looked like a bad fan design. But I'll concede that it's impossible to have a design that didn't look like a half-assed knock-off.
In short.
Awesome universe building. Anything to do with the Jockeys and design was spectacular. Magneto was an awesome robot!
Bland and uninteresting human element/story, inconsistent and annoying characters, Terrible old man makeup, and unsubtle Alien origin.
Oh and the best part? It completely voids the AvP films! For that alone Ridley deserves an award.
I liked The Amazing Spider-Man but I didn't love it.
Mild spoilers ahead, bigger ones hidden.
It felt like I was watching a movie based on Ultimate Spider-Man, while the other trilogy was based on Spider-Man. And I love Ultimate Spider-Man. (As an example in particular the Lizard's style and appearance, and his assault on the school, was very reminiscent of the Goblin's attack on the school in the first Ultimate SM arc.)
Some things I really liked:
*I thought there was a better sense of scale everytime Spidey was swinging in the city than I ever got in the previous trilogy.
*Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy was great
*The way that Peter developed his skill with his powers selfishly, by trying to hunt down one crook, taunting Flash etc, rather than suddenly becoming a crimefighter after one night. It seemed a more believable arc and different to all the other tellings of Spidey's origin.
*The cameo scene. You know the one.
Some things I didn't like
*I like Gwen Stacy, so I have a horrible thought that the third movie could be very sad (if the filmmakers are very game and take that risk).
*No Daily Bugle scenes. Even though they had that scene with Peter trying to take photographs of the Lizard, it doesn't quite feel like a Spider-Man story without the Bugle.
*The workers of New York lining up the cranes. I didn't think Spider-Man had done enough to earn the city's respect that all those people would want to help him. Sure the Dad would want to help him, but all the others? Similarly the Lizard didn't seem to have done enough to be the threat the city needed to rally around Spider-Man. Panic from a bio-terrorism scare, sure, but enough to suddenly be cheering for the vigilante? It seemed a bit rushed.
Oh and the 3D? Not really worth it.
Definitely agree with the 3D, at times I was even trying to convince myself that there was any and I just missed it.
Not showing much about the Bugle was alright to me because the movie never really showed that Peter's aunt with any money troubles; which will probably happen in a sequel.
My main gripe was only how the movie didn't really make me care about Gwen's Dad, which made his fate lose tension.
