Today I saw Skyscraper and it's alright. The movie doesn't spend as much time in a skyscraper as Die Hard does and why would it? Few action movies can stand up to the seminal Die Hard.

Saw The Equalizer 2 today and how underwhelming. It breaks the cardinal rule of making action movie sequels by taking a less equals more approach over a more equals more approach.:(
Jurassic World 2 Fallen Kingdom
Stupid/mindless but fun if you can turn your brain off. Plot and character development = nonexistent, pretty much nonstop over-the-top action. If you're after a good Jurassic Park movie then skip it, if you want an entertaining-enough dinosaur-themed monster flick it does the job.
The last Jurassic Park/World movie I've seen was 2, so I don't know how much this reflects the new typical tone.
It's basically the Jurassic Park equivalent of Pacific Rim - if you just accept it for what it is it's pretty entertaining.
JMO.
I use that same viewpoint for the TF movies.
I quite like JP 1 and 3. They both seem to have the Dinosaurs and wonder thing going on pretty well, as well as a good amount of dino danger.
Jurrassic World, I kind of enjoyed, but disliked all the characters. Especially the kids and love interest. Their relationship just felt stupid. Of course she doesn't care about the kids, she never has, why should she suddenly start with them coming to her job?
New trailer for Gunnm just dropped

I don’t understand all the negative reactions, I think this looks good for what it is and I’m looking forward to seeing it
Batman Ninja is pure genius.:D I saw figures of The Joker and his foot soldiers as well as the title character at Ozcomicon, so I hope the transforming castles are made into toys and from there we can have the combiner. If you haven't seen this movie yet, I highly recommend it because I don't know of any animated Batman movie that could equal this.
Mission impossible fallout. Easy to pick the bady. Action is good. Missing the twists that were in the previous movies, more straight forward. Not as good as earlier installments but enjoyable. They left the broken foot take in the movie. 6/10.
Anyone have ideas on what MCU films could potentially get a UHD Bluray release?
I stopped buying MCU films because I don't want to rebuy a bunch of them unnecessarily. I own everything up to Ant-Man and haven't bought anything since then out of fear that I'll have to rebuy them when Disney finally gets around to releasing UHD Blurays of everything before Disney finally gave up on 3D and joined the UHD bandwagon.
Nothing officially confirmed from Disney. Just store listings which apparently show Avengers 1 and 2 on 4K to be released either August or September. To be taken with a large pinch of salt of course.
But I feel your pain. My MCU collection goes from Blu Ray to 3D Blu Ray and now 4K. But despite all that I won’t be buying any re-releases. 4K upscaling works well enough and the quest for the best quality version would be neverending.
Edit: I stand corrected. Spotted 4K release of Avengers 1 and 2 at JB Hifi.
^Agreed :)
And the DVD does have a Japanese audio track (with English subtitle option) despite the case jacket not advertising it (not sure why they wouldn't display these options). There are two sets of subtitles - one for the original Japanese dialogue and the other for the English dub (dubtitles). Need a lot of suspending disbelief though as the premise of this story and many things throughout it is pretty ridiculous, but if you can accept it then it's a fun fantasy action story. :) One interesting thing was how Batman's grappling claw became useless in feudal Japan since there weren't any tall buildings for him to grapple onto. The movie doesn't explain the absence of any language barrier. I guess the characters must all be carrying Bat-Universal-Translators. :p
Bat-Universal-Translators? Sounds like tardis technology.;)
Went to see Mile 22 on the weekend and worth it for the massive twist at the end.
MINOR SPOILER ALERT
P.S. If you're not a fan of Ronda Rousey then you'll be happy to know she gets more mangled than she did in the Holly Holm fight.
Just watched Upgrade. It’s a low budget Aussie made sci-fi with a good dose of gore. I recommend watching Upgrade to anyone who has enjoyed flicks of a similar kind of combination
I saw an aussie indie movie called Cargo about a family trying to survive in the Aussie outback. Starring martin freeman. I recommend it.
It seems that Thanos has also taken out half of the DC universe with his finger snap.
#NoBatFleck #NoCavillMan
The movie started off as a short film:

I read about that recently.

Well, that sucks. I'll admit, even though BvS and Justice League weren't great movies (far from it), I still think Henry Cavill is the best Superman we've had in years since Christopher Reeve. They just haven't given this newer version of Superman time to develop, unlike RDJ's Iron Man (which has had 10 years to grow). Cavill's version of Superman in MoS and BvS was relatively dark and serious compared to previous Supermen, which I think is an appropriate way of introducing the character. It shows what Superman might have been like in his early days, and that his honorable and polite qualities were things he picked up later with experience. I think if he was portrayed as a noble and idealized person at the start, he'd come off as boring and unrealistic. Worst of all, he might be accused of being another Christopher Reeve clone. This newer version of Superman is different, but still looks and fits the part imo.
As for Batffleck, I'm not too fused about him going. He's too A-list for the role in my opinion. When he appeared in BvS, I couldn't think of him as Bruce Wayne because the fact that he's freaking Ben Affleck totally offset everything. Also, I think he might've taken the role too seriously, like he tried too hard.
Personally I loved Batfleck. Played an older Batman that I have been wanting to see on the big screen.
The fact that Christopher Reeve has played Superman is both good and bad. Good because his portrayal is so well loved, inspiring and subsequently iconic and therein lies the problem; his giant boots are too big to fill.
I love seeing a darker version of Superman as portrayed by Henry Cavill.
Sadly though, most people are not fans of dark introspection and existentialism as shown by how unpopular goth and metal happens to be.
P.S. I have no problem with Batfleck, after all he didn't taint Batman. Val Kilmer and George Clooney did.
I thought Henry Cavill played a great Superman and following his character development in Justice League (where he became reminiscent of the kind of Superman we were all familiar with at the end) I was really looking forward to seeing a proper sequel to Man of Steel.
With the dropping of Affleck as well (which surprisingly I thought he did a decent job of in BvS, but not so much in JL) I have to admit I will have little invested interest in this DC universe anymore.
Watched The Predator the other night, entertaining in a gory blood splattering way, with a little too much focus on cheap laughs in my opinion. Still enjoyed it but objectively would say that it is nothing ground breaking or anything we haven’t seen before. Introduces some more backstory to the Predators and the score draws from the one in the original movie (which is kind of awesome)
Looking forward to venom but expecting to be disappointed
Me too, AC. It looks like it has the right ingredients, but mmm.
Yeah I agree, although I would probably say I liked the concept of Predators better, to be honest this one felt more like a comedy to me
Yeah I saw him, I remember him from Starship Troopers (which is another cool flick btw - had no idea what it was about when I first saw it and was pleasantly surprised with it. Admittingly I have never looked into any of the sequels though)
The immortal wars. This is so Terrible. So bad its good? No. So bad its just bad. Poor cgi, poor acting and poor set design. The costumes are alright. Its a mix of mortal kombat and xmen with people that have powers forced to fight each other by the humans. I skipped to the end. 2/10
I went into Predators with low expectations and surprisingly found it enjoyable. Ok there were plot problems and I really hated the end scene but I didn't find the hot mess that everyone says it is. The comedy was a bit crass at times and sometimes inappropriate. The action was over the top and predator kills were bloody as expected. Decapitations, severed limbs and disembowelments are peppered throughout the film.
I saw a guy taking a bunch of kids on a trip to the theatre and to my surprise they filled up a row in the same screening. When the f-ing this and motherf-ing that started I thought this guy has really picked the wrong movie to bring them to.
Was rewatching Thor The Dark World which was on TV last night. Despite its flaws it's still a much better movie than BvS or Justice League. Because all of these movies suffer from the common flaw of having terribly forgettable villains - and it's true, Malakai... Malakith... I've already forgotten his name. That Dark Elf dude... he is a pretty lame villain, but he's loads better than any of the villains churned out from DCCU! Heck, as much as I really enjoyed Wonder Woman, I gotta admit that Ares is still a pretty cardboard villain. He's nothing more than a walking/talking plot complication for the protagonist to overcome. Okay, every villain is basically a complication for the protagonist(s), but a good villain is more than that. And as Stan Lee has often said, a hero(ine) is only ever as good as his/her villain.
And while the characterisation of Thor wasn't as strong as in Thor Ragnarok or Avengers Infinity War - he still had more character growth than the entire Justice League put together, and that's pretty sad. Although I think one very valid criticism of Thor 2 is how Loki had more character development than Thor. Watching it again this was abundantly obvious.
Then I switched channels and watched the late night movie - 新ゴジラ (Godzilla Resurgence). Yyyyaaaaaaaaaaawwwwnnn OMG... most of the movie is just a series of meetings where people talk about how they're going to deal with Godzilla. Yeah, I get the political statement that the movie's making, but uh... seriously... not nearly enough to make the movie remotely entertaining. The actual scenes with Godzilla in it were really super well done. You can tell that it's the same director as Neon Genesis Evangelion as the way that Godzilla tears up Tokyo is reminiscent of an Angel attack, and it visually has that rather apocalyptic theme to its action. And that ending was pretty brilliant.
Being late at night I was literally falling asleep on the couch watching this. And the story/plot is almost identical to the original 50s movie, only with the use of online social media and the political commentary added in. Basically the same story as the original but updated for today -- nothing terribly new or fresh though aside from Godzilla's ability to rapidly mutate and reproduce. Oh, and the scenes involving foreign dignitaries... cos whenever foreigners appear in Japanese movies they're often really, really terrible actors. Sometimes I wonder if they just approach random White people on the streets of Japan and ask if they wouldn't mind making a cameo appearance in a film or TV series. :p But to Godzilla Resurgence's credit, the White people in this film actually did an okay job of acting. They didn't sound like they were performing in an excruciatingly bad school play. ;) But the really terrible parts were when the Japanese actors were trying to act in English. Make it staaaahp!
To be fair, most actors really suck when acting in a language that they don't actually speak. And at least she's trying to string sentences together and is delivering them with attempted speed as if she's fluent. It's better than say Tom Cruise's horrific attempt at speaking Japanese in The Last Samurai where he would take forever just to speak a few words (but the subtitles would have you believe that he's saying much more!). Don't these people have dialogue coaches? Peter Jackson had dialogue coaches on the set of Lord of the Rings for the fictitious languages of Middle Earth! (although I wonder if - hypothetically speaking - native Middle Earth speakers existed, would they similarly shudder at the way that their languages were spoken in the films). I wonder if it would've been easier/better to have a fluent or native speaker just dub over these actors/actresses? Meanwhile, Vin Diesel dubbed himself as Groot in Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese and French! :D
Rented and watched Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom last night. Ummm... yeah. The producers have said that this is meant to be the second part in a trilogy and boy does it show. This movie feels like the ignored middle child.
Took the kids to see Teen Titans GO to the Movies... absolutely hilarious
The whole family enjoyed the movie, I will say that I wasn't a fan of the cartoon series until I sat down and watched it with the kids and found myself actually enjoying how funny it is.
In my opinion, besides WW and Bale Batman it is the best DC movie.
I found Teen Titans Go was... okay. It's definitely a children's movie and as an adult I didn't get a whole lot out of it (yeah. there were some neat jokes but nothing that engaged me as an audience member). Although my daughter was happy that I didn't fall asleep in the movie because whenever my dad takes her to watch kids films, he dozes off. :p I told her that he did the same thing when he took me to movies when I was a kid, including when I watched Transformers The Movie in cinemas. Dad was fast asleep. :p
Audience members on the other hand were terrible. Lots of talking, mobile phone use etc. - parents either did nothing to control their children or they themselves were also misbehaving. Seriously... if you cannot sit still and watch a movie from beginning to end without needing to talk then you're not old enough to watch a movie in a cinema. I made damn sure that my daughter was emotionally ready before I took her to the cinema (she would've been in Kindy) and explained to her that she can't talk during the film.
The mobile phone use thing is just ridiculous. There's no excuse for that level of bum-hattery.
I watched Ocean's Eight last week.
I enjoy a heist film, and I quite liked the 2000s Ocean's trilogy.
This wasn't as good. It just didn't have the same level of jauntiness. No one looked like they were having a good time, Sandra Bullock got through the whole movie with a scowl on her face, and the various elements of the heist didn't seem particularly well connected.
I would rate it as don't bother.
I just find it to be a cheap thrill of a movie that will never stack up to the original Ocean's movies.
Sandra Bullock is awesome when she's a quirky, happy or down to earth kind of character but the constant scowling and being overly serious just doesn't suit her.
Oceans 8 i found to be missing any great twists. There was one but wasnt surprising or shocking. It was pretty straight forward with the heist. It was a good movie just no big bang moment.
I went to see Venom yesterday and it's a slow movie to start with then picks up some steam but nothing special until you reach the end and then the price of admission is worth it.:)
P.S. To see two alien symbiotes fighting each other takes fight choreography to a whole new level I've never seen before and no I'm not referring to Venom vs. Carnage (the latter is not featured in this movie).
