Well officially they do belong together that's how Habro have released them as a team with a helicopter and a 4wd. I think I read somewhere that Wildrider had been killed and Off-Road is his replacement.
As others have said they are not altering history this is what is happening in the IDW stotryline not in the Sunbow original G1 cartoon.
Some more images have been found here... showing us more of the Japanese versions of the individual modes.
Japanese Drag Strip is a bit bland in robot mode isn't he. It's more G1 accurate but maybe I won't discard my Hasbro Drag Strip too soon.

Also, the idea of gestalt teams having spare members isn't entirely new. 1988's Targetmaster Seacons have 6 members with only 5 of them forming Piranacon or King Poseidon. In 1989's Transformers Victory cartoon, the Decepticon Breast Force had Death Cobra... who was killed by Hellbat after a botched attempt at eliciting Death Cobra to not replace him on the team. And currently Prowl has replaced Scrapper in the IDW comics to allow the Constructicons to form Devastator. It makes sense to have reserve members of a team, because if one member becomes incapacitated, then they cannot form a gestalt. There's a skit from Robot Chicken where half the Constructicons have chucked a sickie, and they form half of Devastator... which Optimus Prime just kicks into then horizon. :p
Furthermore, they're expanding the G1 universe, and what's wrong with that? That's precisely what G1 did in the 1980s; when the Aerialbots first appeared in 1986 we had no idea who they were. The idea of flying Autobots was still a relative novelty, but we accepted them as part of the Transformers universe. It was a bit frustrating at first seeing Slingshot being excluded, but now that we know that Slingshot will be released later on, I don't see the issue with guys like Alpha Bravo. He's not taking anything away from the team. Ultimately, if you don't like him, just don't buy him and wait for Slingshot. ;) But adding new characters to G1 isn't new either, just look at Drift and Windblade. :) Arguably toys like Arcee, Jhiaxus, Darkmount/Straxus etc. are also 'add-ons' becuse they never appeared in the original G1 toy line (and thus never part of the toy continuity proper); these were added in characters who originated from peripheral sources such as the cartoon and comics, but we've since accepted or included them as being part of the G1 universe.
My main complaints about Alpha Bravo would be:
+ The name (it's literally just the first 2 letters of the radio alphabet)
+ Sporting Slingshot's colours
But otherwise I don't mind the toy nor the concept of the character. And it does seem that Hasbro's getting better at it, because Off-Road and Rook have better names and aren't sporting Wildrider's and Groove's colours respectively.
As I said my problem is that Superion is an all air plane team.
that's how I identify him and always will.
But ya I know that they are trying to expand the universe.
Do you have a problem with every Megatron that isn't a pistol? I don't quite understand that mindset, why is every other character allowed changes except for combiners? Why are they one of the few things that must be G1 above all else?

Every iteration of these guys had some sort of similarity, used the same formula if you will. Color, weapon, what have you. Tell me when did Prime ever not have a gun or Megs not have a canon on his arm or by his side? I can't think of any. I'm sure people would be upset if they changed the formula. Would an orange and pink Optimus Prime be okay with you? Serious question.
This is how I feel. Seeing at Superion is MY favorite character of all the TFs, I think its justified (to me at least) to not want huge changes to him. I hope you can see where I am coming from.
