When phones get wet...it's the worst situation of all. it's best you consider getting a new phone as repair costs are not fixed and it could even be worth getting a new one fast and quick.

okay.... this is abit tricky
old phones used to read memories from simcard direct
as newer phones evolved with memory cards of their own, the memory by default will be stored in the phone and no longer the sim card.

there are settings in the phone to which you can twig to have your new/old contacts saved and backed up to the simcard for future use.
the reason why you are seeing your friend's contact and messages is because it's not accessing your simcard directly.... you'll find a few of your old contacts still stored safely if you had it for quite awhile now. *mine did, trust me* :D

i went to the shop today, and after waiting 20 minutes to be served. They just kept trying to flog me a new phone, and the sales man just made vague remarks on why mine wasn't working.

This looks the best place to ask this, although it's more a software than hardware issue.

On Facebook when you remove a friend I know they don't get a message. But what if you decide that deleting the friend was a rather rash decision made in the heat of anger and want to add them back. Do they get a new Friend Request or not because they already once accepted your request?

If they also deleted me as a friend I'd imagine that a request would be required, but I'm wondering if the other person didn't actively knock back my friendship (the way I did :o ) they might not even know I deleted them...

To answer your question, they'll get a new friend request. At least it's not like that Hungry Jack's campaign with an application where if you deleted ten friends you'd get a free burger, however the friend would get an automated message on their page saying they had been deleted and why.

I'm assuming you mean your wireless network at home? Depending on the brand of your wireless modem/router, you need to find your router login details (usually its n ip address, eg 192.168.x.x) You then need to find the default login and password. normaly its written on the bottom of the router/ modem. and will be something like,
username: admin
password 123456 or just password.

Once your in, you need to navigate to the security settings (again where these settings are located will vary by brand) and firstly change your router logon password, then find your wireless settings and set the kind of key you want to use. WEP WPPA etc, it should generate you a alpha numerical key which is what will grant wireless devices (such as laptops, iphones, psp) access to your wireless connection =]

I'd like to watch some of my DVDs on my iPhone, but I need some software to help me convert them. I've got HandBrake (for PC) but the video is badly distorted after conversion. Any tips for what I should use?

I have a 61cm LCD monitor and up till yesterday everything was fine with it. But then I unplugged it because I got a new computer desk -- ya know, switched everything off, put everything aside, put the new desk into place, then put everything else back in place and switched it back on.

Anyway, when I switched my computer back on I found that the display was blurry and looks too stretched. I've mucked around with various kinds of settings, and I've managed to make the blurriness go away, but I can't find a way to make everything not look too stretched out. I've tried changing it to various different screen resolutions too and nothing seems to help. I've got it set on the highest resolution it seems to be offering me which is 1600x1200.

Have you got the latest drivers for both your video card and monitor installed Goki? - That always helps. ;)

What are the actual dimensions of your monitor? (i.e. x by y?)

Does the monitor have an auto settings button you can try?

Do you mean you tried reinstalling the drivers that came on the disc? or that you went to the video card manufacturer's website and obtained the latest drivers?

Have you tried 1280 x 768?

My whole screen went blank with a small dialogue box that said "Input Not Supported."

Sorry for the late reply mate,

If you haven't already done so, find out the name of the video card manufacturer and the name and type of your video card (for example, I run a Nvidia Geforce 9600GT) you have and then go to the relevant webiste and download the latest drivers for your card. ;):)

Basic computer maintenance dictates that one should always do the following:

1. De-fragment your Harddrive/s regularly.
2. Ensure that the latest drivers for all internal and peripheral devices are installed regularly.
3. Ensure that a current Anti-Malware program is installed and regularly updated and that it's subscription is renewed at the end of it's life.

This will ensure that your computer has the best it can have to work with and that as many basic functional issues are mitigated. :)

Gok, what's the brand (don't think it's important) and the model of the LCD you have there? Is it a non-wide screen?

It's an Acer wide screen.

Basically i'd like something I can load a couple of programs onto and then copy files onto so I can sit in bed and have a read.

It doesn't need to be able to access the internet, I just want a plain and simple reader I can copy files to.

The green means you're on a site with a secure connection, the red i assume means you're on a site with what has been identified as a non-secure connection?\. Maybe someone else can confirm this too

it was the same site, hotmail. One minute green and another red

Getting intermittent bursts of performance on my ADSL2+ connection since Monday. Basically I get 5-30 seconds of good data volume, then 1 minute+ of zero and then it picks up again. This is very apparent when streaming from youtube and direct downloads. Torrents provide a very steady stream of data but they seem capped at around 100kB/s

Did you check to see what other programs are running in the background of Windows? - Certain programs can definitely eat into your bandwidth. ;)

My sister's modem has a broken power cord. It's an older Netgear modem from Telstra.

I've looked on ebay and found a few sellers selling the same model rather cheaply and figure I could get one of those and just use the cord.

But I was wondering if there's other ways to get replacement powercords (with the right amp/voltage etc requirements). We tried a DSE store and the salesman said none of the power adapators they had were the right fit; they were either too high or too low.

Or a better way to get a new cable modem? I can only find ADSL ones for sale and the Telstra site is full of 'must use a Telstra supplied cable modem' warnings.

Anyway, any tips or advice appreciated.

Paul, if its an old modem...it's time to get a new one; it's as cheap as it gets now and it'll benefit you/your sister.

You can try calling telstra and see what offers they can give you first.. then decide; maybe trick them saying you might opt to transfer your contract to other telco if you do not get a good deal?

So I've got a technician who was supposed to install our NBN box this morning, but he's saying that the ideal place to install it is our garage, because our external NBN box is just outside of our garage. I wanted the internal NBN box to be in our lounge room which is where the PC is (currently connected via cable to modem (DSL)), but the tech guy is saying that it's not possible due to the distance, at least not without drilling through walls.

The easiest option atm is to put the box inside the garage, but it also means that our telephone will need to be connected to that box in the garage. Also, I'm not sure how the NBN box will connect to the PC in the lounge room.

I'm a very, very non-tech savvy person, so please excuse me if this seems like a silly question, but I would very much appreciate any advice on this matter. :o

I don't have the NBN, but it sounds like the technician is looking out for his own interests and not yours. However I'm not sure if he's contractually obligated to locate the connection box where you want. He may refer you to a local cabling technician that can run a cable to your lounge the painful way.

However if you have a free power outlet at both your garage and lounge you can use a set of powerline adaptors to exploit the existing electrical wiring in your home for data transmission to your lounge. I currently do this for my cable TV service.

Alternatively depending on your house design would you consider going wireless? You can base a wireless router in the garage to provide internet via wifi. All you'd need to do is install a wireless card in your PC in order to receive the signal. Only problem is that areas furthest from your garage may not have the best wireless signal. This can be solved by installing additional transmitters around the house but that is another additional cost.

Yep, that's total BS. All houses have the ability to reconnect cables though the ceiling/walls. I had an Optus Technician come in earlier in the month and he connected the modem in the living room (front of house) and through the ceiling, pulled the telephone cable to the kitchen (back of house).

He is just telling you BS so he doesn't have to make the effort.

As Lint mentioned, perhaps wireless would most likely be the best option for you. You don't really game or anything of the sort to require a 100% stable internet connection. Given how you have described your internet usage in the past, WiFi would be perfectly good for you and a much richer experience with the NBN.

I called my ISP... was on hold for 2h and their techie division had closed by time we got connected. :rolleyes: :mad: So I've told the operator to get hold of a techie first and then call me back tomorrow evening.

Then the initial NBN technician called me back and told me that because our place is two-storeys, he cannot run wires under the house. And apparently there's a danger with running the wiring through walls. Anyway... awaiting a second opinion tomorrow. :rolleyes:

It's possible that since this is government ran, they want to avoid any possibility of mishaps by restricting what the technicians can do. They probably don't want to risk tradies getting injured or killed doing stuff like it happened with the insulation scandal.

To add some logic - If the wall has powerpoints then you can run cables through.
