I new Bandai would do this eventually. The regular VF-171 has always been the Frontier toy I really want.
And that Varja looks really nice to.
Wow, this market is brutal. Figures sold out one month after release; confusing designations; and a million versions of the VF-1. Makes you wish for a tfwiki-style guide to Macross toys.
Still, I wish Takara/Hasbro would take some cues from Bandai/Yamato when it comes to designing sleek jetformers. Compare the VF-4G Lightning III to ROTF robot-under-plane Jetfire. The YF-29 Durandal's underside profile puts all the Transformers masterpieces to shame (and so too does the price, sadly).
There's anymoon for reviews and categories. It is rather confusing tho.
For Yamato's side of things you can also check their product listing here which is in announced order i think, albeit in Japanese.
I was fretting Tober's post was gonna be about a delay to the VF-4G, but thankfully not! I have mine coming with MP Soundwave (and was going to get them sent in January anyway, to avoid christmas mail blunders), so i hope it makes the original date still!
Thanks for the pointers, guys. That helps in picking out a VF-1S (just go with the latest release or two).
I'm so jealous. The VF-4G looks quite sweet, but it's going for over $400 now, which is 80% of the way towards a TFC Hercules. I'm still hopeful that the limited release means Yamato will later release the mould in OVA colours with wider availability so that us mere mortals can possess it too.
If you're just starting out, rule of thumb is to stay away from eBay - that's where people will try to offload lemons or scalp at ridiculous mark-ups.
It doesn't help that we get revisions every few years either. Yamato is expected to announce the Ver 2 of the 1/60 YF-19 soon.
As far as Yamato goes we only get one new mold a year currently, with plenty of warning. So I find it easier to save and justify the cost. Bandai released the VF-171 mold this year, the Renewal VF-25 mold at the end of last year, the YF-29 mid 2011. So it's mostly slight remolds/repaints and add-on packs - if you can order them.
I wouldn't get your hopes up for the Flashback 2012 VF-4. Yamato don't have the license, apparently.
Finally got this bad boy delivered yesterday:

Awesome figure. I chose the YF-29 because the forward-swept wings looked cool, I liked the battroid mode more than the YF-19, and I wasn't a fan of how the swing-wing Macross airplanes look unbalanced without their rear horizontal stabilisers.
The figure does have some issues:
- The sizable wings make Battroid mode back-heavy.
The canards end up just behind the hips in battroid mode, limiting hip movement. You move the hips forward as part of the transformation, but it's still a challenge to get him to crouch forward.EDIT: After playing with it some more, I realised I hadn't correctly transformed the hips. When done correctly, they clear the canards so posing is no problem.- The stand would look cooler if it was coloured.
Overall, I love it in all its white-tampoed-on-white glory. :)

Now I just have to wait for HLJ to re-stock the VF-1S in Fokker colours so I can have a "then and now" side-by-side.
In other news, HLJ have re-opened orders for the VF-4G Lightning III.
Yamato has updated their development blog with new images and information for their upcoming 1/60 VF4G Lightning III.
And apparently they are re-opening pre-orders as they have extra demand. So the VF-4G is a success! :)
