It is simply a nod to the fans.

It's not the first time that fan terms have entered official currency. The term "Generation 1" was originally a fan term. I remember the day G2 first aired... watched it in the morning, then went to school, and everyone was saying, "Did you notice how it was pretty much the same as Generation 1?" -- so the fan term was pretty instant. But "Generation 1" wasn't officially used until 2000.
so who has the answer to the eternal question??
to open or not to open

as they are they take up alot of space and really dont display to well in my cabinets in my opinion
so do i leave them as they are or take a knife to them? decisions decisions
For those smaller sets of figures, I think they look nice displayed sealed... but if space is a factor...

If you're not going to regret doing so later, then open them. Personally, i'd keep them sealed.
I'd open them. Machine Wars were terrible shelfwarmers here anyway...
do you want to see how they transform? would you consider selling them later. Resale value on a sealed complete set of figures would have to be pretty good.
If you want to transform them, see how they work, then crack them open. if you have been planning on opening them while you collected them all MISB then I'd set aside an afternoon or at least an evening and soak it up and enjoy it. take lots of photos and let them out of their cages.
I collected a lot of the Animated series after the fact and I still have most of them MISB. one of these days i'm going to sit down and crack them all open. it's a case for me of having display space at the time since I only have the one cabinet.
