How is that compared to 'The Blackening' dude? +/-?
(The Blackening was friggin' Awesome! :D)

Very similar in that most songs are 6+ minutes in length ala old-school Metallica. I love that because for me, some of the best songs should have you going through a range of emotions when listening to it... kinda like a good book or movie, rather than just playing the same riffs and cords from start to finish.
There are of course some stand-out tracks (the title track included) but what you'll find is that the album finishes very differently to the way it starts off.
Quite a few older MH fans don't like this, however I have been there since the beginning and appreciate the musical evolution.
I would give The Blackening an 8.5 out of 10; Unto the Locust would rate as a 9 using the same scale. Highly recommended.
Excellent, I'll have to get a hold of it and give it a listen - The thing I liked about The Blackening is that it's a record you can whack on and enjoy all the way through and I too like the longer length of the songs, a very Sabbath approach also. ;)
If 'Unto The Locust' is better than that I'll be very pleased. :D
I do like Pantera, but wasn't impressed by Sepultura. I'll try out Devin Townsend.
Thanks for the post Hursti, I actually do have Static X, Disturbed, Rammstein and Drowning Pool albums (and a Fear Factory album too, how sick is their cover of Cars?!). Just forgot to list them in my original post :)
I got Unto the Locust because I loved MH's 'Now I lay Thee Down' but didn't have any of their albums. Still haven't listened to the Blackening but like you I'm stuck listening to Unto the Locust because it's so damn good. All the songs I can listen to and are done with so much energy and heart, many rock albums I hear only have the 1 or 2 songs I like with 6-9 other filler songs. My fav from this album is 'This is the End'.
I also checked out Nothingface, Ether's probably my fav song on their album Skeletons but I actually enjoyed the Violence album because of the heavier riffs, though their vocals aren't as strong as Machine Head. Still gotta listen to more metal folks, once I get tired (don't know if I ever will) or Unto the Locust!
I have been listening to a fair bit of John 5 lately. A virtuoso on a stringed instrument & has played with everyone & anyone from Marilyn Manson to KD Lang.
Like 5FDP, your taste in music impresses and pleases me greatly; with regards to Fear Factory's cover of Cars? - F@#$ Yeah Son! :D:cool:
I'm not too privy to anything from Dream Theatre, but I know that this one from Dream Evil is incredibly epic and Metal to the core! :D;)
The blokes been around the block huh? :p - I love his work with Rob Zombie in Sick Bubblegum. :D:cool:
Dream Evil is awesome! And hilarious.
True that. The humor in that song, quite funny.
They have had some great albums, but I must admit I haven't bought any after United :o Their albums with Snowy are my favs, that guy is just too damn talented. I really gotta grab his live dvd when I see it, Live Showreel In The Wunderwurld, where he plays music from all the bands he has been in.
Love all his stuff when he was in Notre Dame, you guys should def check them out.
Why is it I always discover bands after one of the member dies?
Quite a great piece of Doom Metal right here and here
And for those that like folk metal (and for those that are going to go see them at Soundwave in a few months time) Turisas - Supernaut
These guys are amazing, cannot wait to finally see them.
After sifting through a shit-tone of .wma's courtesy of 1AZRAEL1 (Horrible, horrible things :p) and .mp3's courtesy of another mate, I spent quite a bit of time yesterday listening to Judas Priest (More than I have ever had) which is basically "The 1st time" I've listened to them and I've got to say: I'm a fan.;)
I'm, hence, currently listening to them via 'The Essential - Judas Priest' of which I purchased for $13.00 at JB-Hifi earlier this morning and I'm absolutely digging it!
2 Discs covering 30 years of Hella Metal, from a band I basically knew nothing about up until yesterday - F*** I love this genre! :D
(Subsequently; I've also identified that my tastes lie with bands that formed prior to 2000, specifically 1995 and earlier :p)
Priest are the founders of that dual guitar speed metal sound that influensed so many of the earlier thrash bands.
That twin CD is a great way to be introduced to the might & power of the Priest.
Pretty much everything of Judas Priest from 'Sad Wings of Destiny' to 'Defenders of the Faith' is well worth it.
After you are done with Priest, you can jump across to Mercyful Fate.
@Prowl & Demonac: They certainly are in many ways just as definitive as Sabbath were for the genre and I'm thoroughly loving the 34 Tracks tracks that I have in front of me! :D
As for Mercyful Fate, and by extension King Diamond, I do have a bit of their/his stuff as 1AZRAEL1 is a big proponent of 'em. :D:cool:
Indeed I shall have to give them a little more "Air Time" once I've finished gorging myself on Judas Priest. ;):p
Also, has anyone been viewing Metal Evolution by Sam Dunn? - Man he does an excellent job!
To reiterate what I've said in another place, with regards to Tony Iommi's recent diagnosis of (Early Stage) Lymphatic Cancer:
Quote:
I'd like to send the best possible vibes to Iommi, his family and those by extension, so that he might conquer this persistent scourge of humanity.
"Praise be to the Pantheon of Fallen Metal Gods; please aid this giant in his hour of need so as to prevent the world from losing yet another of it's most treasured beacons of light".
I have a bunch of Priest as well, and my fav album would have to be Painkiller, though they are all fantastic.
One of the greats, even made leather metal :p
MF is another greatly underrated band, incidentally I have all their stuff, including the stuff King did before MF. Purely awesome stuff from them and King Diamond. One very unique vocalist.
Dani from 'Cradle of Filth' would get a lot of his inspiration from King.
A quick correction: MF released 2 albums before splitting up and letting King go his own way. They reformed again many years later. I think they are no more again, as King seems to release albums under 'King Diamond' only nowadays.
Ever heard COF cover of Devil Woman? King does guest vocals on it. Quite an awesome cover.
Talking about covers, Lita Ford singing Only Women Bleed. She does it well.
And a classic from a great Aussie Metal band Vanishing Point and the song that first got me into them when I saw it on Rage many many a year ago when they played good stuff. I bring this up, because after 8 years of searching (not very hard :p) I finally bought their debut album with those 2 songs on it. Fantastic band, I seen them on a few occasions. And a newer song of theirs.
Another Aussie Classic Dungeon
This is just awesome and adorable; Metal is definitely in safe hands. :D:cool:
Aside from it being Hardcore :p
I just love what Oderus Urungus of GWAR had to say about it.
"I found myself imagining the little girl being torn apart by a Manticore. But I mean, hell, it got like 8 million hits the second it came out, so there must be something cool about it."
I have to say, what could be better than a classical heavy metal album? Having Christopher Lee doing vocals :D
The dude is amazing, such a unique singing voice.
If you can get your hands on it, Charlemagne:By Blood and the Cross, is a fantastic album. Some great riffs, with Ol Drac singing is worth the money I spent getting it. So far I have only found it on Amazon, but sure you could find it on other sites online. Doubt you will ever see it locally.
New Fear Factory Album - The Industrialist, due later 2012! :D
Me too; I was lucky enough to see them for the first time in January of 2010, they had a Sideways Show when they were out here supporting "Mechanize" at Soundwave.
(That was the last time they were out here I believe )
Even managed to get my shirt signed by both Dino & Burton, needless to say that shirt has never been worn nor seen the light of day since! :D
Nice! I've seen them twice - once at Selina's Coogee Bay Hotel and then again at the Enmore. Both tours were early 2000's (I have the tix stubs at home).
At the Selina's gig, Dino threw his pick into the crowd and somehow I managed to snatch it out of the air in almost complete darkness. I have it framed at home  You may recall that that was the show that Fear Factory was 'ambushed' by fans after the show because they stopped a few doors down from the venue to pick up pizzas. I wasn't one of those fans, but I remember the police rushing in and the van with the band inside speeding off.
I've heard mention of that happening but I can't say I know the full details but that sounds more or less like the sort of thing that'd happen. :D
You're a lucky bugger for having seen them twice dude (Waits for Azrael to start rubbing things in :p), but bloody well done on scoring that pick! - damn thing must've of been guided to your hand by the Metal Gods or something!
Framing it is an awesome idea too, I want to get that done for my shirt but I haven't the wall space as is.:o
Hehe, they make mention of that on their 'Digital Connectivity' DVD - Sandra Sully reporting and all! :p:D
The passing of another musician from bands I like.
Tonmi Lillman, who's played in TO/DIE/FOR, SINERGY and AJATTARA, and now revealed was the new drummer for LORDI. Sad sad sad.
Went to Soundwave yesterday. It was AWESOME  So many bands over the space of 11 hours. The highlight surprisingly was Limp Bizkit () with the biggest disappointment being the sound during Slipknot (waaaaay too distorted). All in all, I'm very tried and very sunburnt but it was worth it :D
Limp was a big surprise, I only watched em coz I wanted a seat lol. And I am knackered coz I'd been up for 48 hours haha. Had to work day before, and basically 3 hours after the finish :p
Wish I grabbed your number beforehand, coulda found you somewhere.
But the band that blew me away (and knew they would lol) was Turisas. Those guys are just awesome.
Soundwave isn't until next Monday for us here. but I will be avoiding Slipknot. every time I see them live the sound quality is dreadful
I'm so envious of the lot of you, I really wanted to see Coal Chamber but will have to resign to YouTube videos... :o
Glad to hear everyone enjoyed themselves, my younger Brother sure did but he said that Manson fell really flat and is a shadow of his former 'Live' self. :(
is Manson still a chunky guy?
it always takes me ages to find the best threads! i'm not gonna read back over 30 pages to see what has or hasn't been discussed already so don't dogpile me if i f#@k up.
Does anyway watch Metalocalypse?
