Ok I'm going to read it again and if I don't tear up or feel any emotion I'm either a soulless monster or you guys are over-emotional girlyboys.Quote:

Oh sorry bitch! We didn't realise cutting edge, brilliant writing would offend your delicate sensibilities.Quote:

The grape scene. That's where it hits.
It was particularly hard for me because I'd read the entire series over the course of a couple of days, so everything was still fresh in my mind. You travel with the characters (and in this case a pivotal character), you become a part of their group, so when something happens you feel it's happened to a close friend. Vaughn did an excellent job with the character development and building this sense of vicarious osmosis. He's a truly phenomenal writer.
Crap, it's been forever (okay August 2009) since I've visited OTCA.
I'm glad to see the comic book thread I created is still going strong.
So to kick off my return, what's everybody's favourite ongoing title at the moment?
Heroic Age Thunderbolts has knocked Secret Warriors off the top spot for me. Love the new team, love Kev Walker's art, though it looks like he won't be covering the Shadowland tie ins though.
Nick Spencers Morning Glories (runaways meets lost) amazing book, and only 2 issues in.
OK, so I thought I was reading Secret Warriors, not Nick Fury and the howling friggin' commandos, as much as I love them, it was not what the book was meant to be about! Bring on #20
Thunderbolts looks great at the moment, def picking up the trade!
What I am currently reading:
Uncanny X-Men/Legacy
Avengers/New/Secret
Deadpool
Uncanny X-Force
X-23
Secret Warriors
Nemesis
Hack/Slash
Velocity
and the HC Hellspawn, by BMB, Steve Niles and art by Ashley Wood.
That might be the difference. I read everything as it was released but had a 6 month break before I read the last tpb. I will try again.

There's not a lot I'm buying at the moment:
Uncanny X-Men
X-Men Legacy
New Mutants
X-Factor
Runaways
Buffy Season 8
Fables
I look forward to the Fables books the most (as I read all these in the trades).
Poor runaways, cancelled with no explanation other than 'On hiatus due to re-tooling'
Thanks Joe Q
With the movie beginning production, hopefully Marvel pulls 'em back.
On that, WOW marvel studios is gonna have a hard time explaining who Molly Hayes is lol
Paulbot, what're your thoughts about Buffy Season 8? The 'super' powers?
My gf reads it, and I flick through the occasional issue, but found the characters not really relfecting who they really are.
Like Willow swearing, things like that. Now a lot of people say the show obivously had parametres in place, so now being in a comic they can, well I strongly disagree, as those 'parametres' are what I believe truly defined the characters.
I didn't know Runaways was cancelled, I only ordered the latest digest last night.
Buffy the comic doesn't compare that well with Buffy the TV series. There's only two more books of this "season" so I want to see how it ends up, and then re-read it all. As I read when the Trades come out I've not got to see the "super" powers be explored yet.
Yeah, so dissapointing, but no one knows why
Sales on it were always huge, and a very large fan base, I guess thats why the movie was green lit.
So sorry, I shouldve checked what you were up to in Season 8 before talking about it.
Ill just say this, it really gets good after #32
I'm having more time these days and am getting back into actively consuming issues rather than have them accumulating dust.
Some news here that is not new but I don't think anyone's paying attention to:
http://www.comicbookresources.com/?p...ticle&id=28466
Known fact for a long time now but the rapid attrition of titles is a feature these days that I'm not sure how the large companies will retain in the long run.
Have any of you read comics on the ipad? Incredible experience. Can't recommend it enough. It's also really sparked a lot of my interest again back into comics. I got the ipad mainly for books originally. Save money and no storage space. But the same principle has come to apply to comics and the comixology apps are amazing in the way they offer a brand new reading experience. I've re-read comics I've owned and read many times and I still can't help but marvel at the quality of the experience. The only thing that doesn't have the same punch at times is the massive double splashes. But even that's easily compensated by the new way you consume the comics. Not to mention its cheaper. Perhaps this is contributing to the decline in the direct market. But given it's relative new-ness, I don't think so.
That's not to say I won't by print but definitely am only going to buy HCs or premium formats for my favourite comics now. No longer will I accumulate a whole of physical comics I have to go to the trouble of storing unless its the best stuff I must have.
Courtesy of the ipad, my current favourite series is Y the Last Man. I'm reading each issue as it gets released in the DC store. Though I have to admit I've had to resist the temptation of just going and buying the darn hardcovers and reading the whole story in one go. But I'm trying to restrain myself b/c this is the first time in a long time that I'm waitng and waiting for every single issue to come out. That's a feeling I've long forgotten; that excitement on release day. It's great to feel it again every Wednesday.
Which pales to a lot of others stuff that I get from my LCS which just accumulates and then I pick up every few months.
But yes, Y the Last Man is so far a great series. Will chase it down in HC too eventually but will read it first in single issue format.
What else I'm reading:
- Green Lantern
- Green Lantern Corps
- Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors
- Birds of Prey
- Captain America
- Secret Six
- Transformers: Drift
... whoa! I just realised how heavily DC skewed that is. I grew up on Marvel but geez have things changed. I still get the Marvel HCs, mind you, but I also do that for the above (or TPB form) when it's released.
EW! GROSS! WRONG!
I will never read a comic digitally, unless that be a few preview pics from a site. but thats just me, I understand others get what they want through other mediums.
Although absolutley Fantastic that it has gotten you back into comics :)
I too bought an iPad for the purpose of comic books. I never wanted one, but when I bought one for my girlfriend and actually saw the potential of it, I couldn't resist. Sure I use it for other things like social networking and playing 'Monkey Island', but the comics, that's where it's at.
I use Comixology and the Marvel, DC and Transformers apps, but Comixology pretty much makes the other three redundant. And I'm not going to lie, I also use ComicZeal with the comics I've required through other means.
I was always 'only' a Marvel Ultimate and Transformers reader, then I started reading 'Invincible' and 'Fables', but it was Geoff Johns that got me reading DC with 'Green Lantern'. That was the catalyst because after that I got the iPad and I'm now reading books I never thought I'd give a go or would have otherwise not even known about. It's also helping me keep on top of all the books I'd normally wait months for trades, because I don't buy single issues. Even though in a few months I'll pick up the 'Rose Red' trade of 'Fables' to add to the bookcase, I'm reading it right now without having to deal with ads on every second page and a stack of issues taking up room that I do not have. I'd also given up on Marvel after the Ultimate line finished and did not continue to the new series' for because for a number of reasons, but now I'm giving it a go again.
One of the other major problems for me is there's no comic store on the Sunshine Coast, and despite there being a fair few in Brisbane, I still deal with my friend who owns the store in Toowoomba. Given how rarely I get to Toowoomba these days, we've always worked on a system where he orders in all the books I want, over time (months on months) I pay him off, then when I'm there next I have a haul waiting for me. I'm still doing that to a smaller extent, but now I can read new issues every Wednesday/Thursday like everyone else.
This is what I've got on the iPad right now:
- The Authority
- Batman (Hush and Dark Knight Returns)
- Chew
- Fables
- Green Lantern (also Corps, Emerald Warriors, Brightest Day)
- Haunt
- Invinicible (and all the spin off mini series')
- Jack of Fables
- Kick-Ass
- Kingdom Come
- Locke & Key
- Nemesis
- Powers
- Scott Pilgrim
- Superman-Batman
- Tech Jacket
- The Flash
- The Amory Wars
- The Walking Dead
- Transformers
- Ultimate comics
- Y-The Last Man
The Boys - all in TPB
Fables - all in TPB, still waiting for the next serving :D:D
so I picked up Cinderella TPB as well - very nice read:D:D
Jack of Fables - TPB
Brightest Day - single issues
Ive also started on Drift miniseries so I might as well continue it as its only 4 issues anyways.
JLA - per issue - but not so much these days. The current line -up sucks IMO
favourite on going title is Invincible, I am far behind the eight ball with this one but have been collecting the trades and love it. Can't say enough good things about this book!!
Also collecting
X factor
Wolverine
Tick New Series
Red Robin
Hawkeye & Mockingbird
I am going to drop Hawkeye though, just not doing it for me and thinking of doing the same with Wolverine even though that title started off my collecting when I was 12, I think even I can get too much of Logan lol.
Over the weekend I re-read a lot of Wildcats as I was feeling nostalgic and dissapointed about the news re wildstorm. Sure that early Jim Lee wildcats stuff is very heavily inspired by the Xmen but it was really good stuff, I have the mini series and issues 1 -34 as well as a lot of spin off stuff and variant covers, I loved it so much that I will be tracking down trades of the stuff I don't have, mostly Wildcats 3.0 and the new series.
More interesting news from DC

im a long time punisher fan (is there anyone out there that actually likes this frankencastle crapola???)
this was released not so long ago
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...cement__sm.jpg
not to mention him running around in shadowlands all alive and stuff, i hope this means he will be going back to normal and i can file frankencastle out with the dead angel stuff
this book reminds me of marvel knghts
otherwise Punisher Max is the best stuff ever....
Yeah that would be me!! Love the Frankencastle arc so much, and knew it was only a matter of time before it ended.
And it was awesome to see Frank get revenge on Daken, something he could never have done otherwise.
Read FrankenCastle issue 21, and you will learn more.
Marvel Universe VS The Punisher is fantastic.
wow im starting to like this forum more and more.
good to see a comics thread!
after going through the last dozen or so pages i see you all have pretty good taste in comics!
ive been collecting comics for years, its my "main" hobby along with transformers, figurines and arcade etc
everyone seen the walking dead tv trailer?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yg46DWI_fCE
sorry if its already been posted
Hi Ostybeef
Love The Maxx avatar, I really need to find a figure!
Havent read much of The Walking Dead, does it stick close to the source material?
judging by the trailer its looking very close but its not out yet. think it comes out on halloween.
i would suggest checking walking dead out. especially if you like zombies. i just did an order from an ebay seller and got the last 8 trades for around 10 bucks each! i did an order and got 18 trades for $230 delivered. just waiting for the box to arrive now!
yeah i love the maxx/sam kieth. im also on the search for the maxx figures. i have the mcfarlane one but i opened it like most of my figs so want to get another one misb and also the other one that was released
I'm a big Chris Yost fan so I decided to check out this interview.... then I looked at the piccy to the right......is it just me or does it look like Ironman and Spidey are having a wicked perv?
http://www.comicbookresources.com/?p...ticle&id=28584
hahah sure does. looks like ironmans having a sniff of frosts panties haha
Minds outta the gutter fellas hahaha
but honestly, you'd be looking too :D
Just finished X-force: Sex & Violence, one word summary: WOW!
is that the one in which domino gives logan road head or is my mind still in the gutter?
They have sex multiple times, but I believe the felatio you speak only ever happened in your mind, unless I missed a page.
Hmmmmm Domino, I have intriguing thoughts as to what she would look like under......
Best not to post what I think :o
hahah. i thought it was that one sorry i flicked through it and laughed.
never really got into domino or the latest x-force, got the first few issues but it didn't grab me. i think x23 is pretty cool.....better than daken anyway.
you read deadpool - wade willsons war? domino wasn't too bad in that....
at what stage did she become such a nympho anyway?
X-23 is an all time fav of mine, love her :D
Really dug the new X-Force, it was good seeing the x-men spill some blood.
I only read Daniel Ways Deadpool (and previoulsy Cabel & Deadpool) each other writer just doesnt seem to capture the essesnce of who wade is, and the human touches he places on the character I believe are amazing.
Like in the recent issue with Ghost Rider, after the Penance stare is done to Wade, he asks Johnny
"Do you believe I should die?'
"Based on what I know of you: Yeah!'
And with a beautiful gazing stare into the distance, simply replies with:
'Thanks man.'
Do plan on getting Deadpool Pulp and Deadpool Max!
Yeah Domino is like She-Hulk, all of a sudden have become trashy as and sleeping with a whole bunch of people.
Lol Im pretty sure there is a line in the M.U. for girls that wanna sleep with Logan, he has that whole animal attraction, powers of seduction thing going on.
I HATE DAKEN! There I said it, read The Punisher crossover, Frank f*cks him up :D
Earth-A? Are you sure? I remeber Logan saying to Jen he has no desire to "chase after Juggernaut's sloppy seconds."
Wait you're right, alternate She-Hulk, apologies :o
yeah i loved that scene with ghost rider. was perfect.
ive been a massive fan of deadpool since then mini series came out and have to say deadpool hasn't been quite the same since he was canceled/renamed to agentx.
cable deadpool was good but wasn't as good as the original but the new ongoing is getting back on track.
i'm a bit pissed off because i collect any appearance of deadpool......and since hes big again hes in everybook and has 4 minis plus the occasional one shot. the bastards at marvel sure know how to sell units.....
just read deadpool pulp on the crapper this morning actually.....really enjoyed what they have done with it. cant wait to get the next issues
hahahah the best x-men comics for a very long time.......morrisons run was amazing. did you happen to check out we3 the unofficial "weapon plus" series from morrison?
which version of she hulk used to break the fourth wall in the 80s? the slutty one or the other one hahah
we3 is excellent, no doubt about it
The real She-Hulks the fourth wall breaker. ;) The recent Dan Slott series was a favourite series (particularly at the beginning)
I loved Cable vs Deadpool and was sorry to see that end. The current overdose of Deadpool is too much though.
i was unhappy that it ended but at the same time i prefer my deadpool with out the bro-mance and was happy once they started up his new series.
i agree with the too much deadpool. most of its trash. deadpool corps is one of the worst things i own....but cos its deadpool i still get it :/
still dont know how liefield gets work these days.....20 years and he still cant draw fucking feet.....or guns for that matter. his art hurts my brain
merc with a mouth was alright but most of the rest is crap
The current ongoing is a bit hit or miss.
I like Wade Wilson's War until the very end.
Given up on Team-Up. Didn't even bother with Corps.
I think the problem with Deadpool at the moment is no one really knows how to "write" him. Writers tend to forget that he's also a deadly mercenary and not just the butt of all jokes/meta/fourth wall breaking clown he's made out to be now.
But I have to admit I look forward to him being in the new Uncanny X-Force.
I haven't read any of the deadpool stuff, he wasn't the bandwagon type of character he is now just before I stopped collecting comics (about 4 years ago). He is a cool character but I am not going down that road just yet.
Walking Dead is Awesome! Robert Kirkman has to be my favourite writer at the moment. I don't have any of the Walking dead trades yet but have read some and it is on my to get list.
Just finished reading the 4th Invincible trade and loved it. Definitely my favourite title atm and I am just playing catch up. Can't wait to buy the rest of the trades and see where the story goes.
I've just read Captain America Reborn and am considering whether to keep going. The run from "Winter Solider" through to "Reborn" feels like a nice clear beginning/middle/end story. Is "Two Americas" a good epilogue?
