That's awesome. Hadn't seen that yet, trying to avoid spoilers

I called them today and they said that it should be in within a week or two.
This isn't as bad as 1991 when they got G1 US#78, then missed #79 and got in #80. I was so used to always getting my comics in order I didn't even bother checking the issue number and proceeded to read #80 without having read #79! Then it was months later until they finally got #79... I remember making up my own comic as a school art project essentially filling in the events between #78 and #80, which turned out to be entirely different from #79 (and ultimately I had to make the ending splinter away from #80). I did get top marks for that assignment as well as an award. :) But geez... so sucked having the end of G1 spoiled for me because I read the last two issues in reverse order. :(
Then there was 2003 where they came close to missing a few issues of Armada due to distribution issues w/ Diamond... gah. So I don't mind a slight delay, as long as we get the comics in!
Now I just want him to die even more! :p
Haha! :D
Sadly my LCS didn't receive #22 from Diamond this week.
*Shakes fist at Diamond Distributors*
Did anyone get an "Ace Rimmer" vibe from Thunderclash? :)
That was my thought when I read that this was the pack-in for Generations Skids. He doesn't even seem to be in the group shot on the last page. I thought maybe it was before he was picked up but First Aid's in shot, and Swerve has a drinks tray which definitely puts it sometime after #5.
I've always loved the Turbomaster/Predator line and was really excited to see Alex Milne's rendition of Thunderclash on the A cover (wish I could get a print of it!) - sadly the interior art is a major departure from the established style with lots of detail, heavy lines and shadowing and dirt/damage spots everywhere. I've never been a fan of the 'humanised' faces either, they just look wrong on transforming robots. :)
The story, while probably the weakest so far, is still enjoyable and fills in some gaps while providing a nice change of pace between Remain in Light and Dark Cybertron.
Yes! I couldn't place it until I read your post but that's definitely it, and it's perfect for Thunderclash. :D I'm only sorry that we're unlikely to see him again/very often due to his incredibly one-dimensional characterisation.Quote:

There ya go, I learnt something today :D
Alpha Trion's alt-mode in the recent Pax Spotlight also reminded me of the Tumbler.
No one slap me but I'm finally catching up on mtmte up to issue 9 :) good stuff.
*SPOILERS*
Yeah I didn 't like this issue that much. It wasn't terrible like a Costa issue or brain dead like a McCarthy's 'writing' but it just seemed very below par with the rest of the MTMTE series.
After reading the James Roberts post, I can see why. It was basically something that Hasbro imposed and forced rather than something that organically grew from the story. Unfortunately this decision also prevented the far more interesting text story we saw last to become a full issue on it's own which sucks. As mentioned, the story there is much more relevant to the overall plot with a lot of important points than what we got in this 'filler' story.
This filler story was still enjoyable enough, it had it's comedic moments but I was a bit turned off by Rung's 'alt mode'. I was wanting him to be a scooter. If they add some mystery to his 'club' mode then maybe but right now its kind of dull and it seems to have been purely done for comedic reasons dictated by the story's situation.
The 'other warring race' also seemed a bit strange and out of the blue.
The art - I really disliked it and thought it too gritty and unsuitable for a more 'light hearted' issue. Another oddity, possibly also forced by Hasbro as it doesn't make sense to have such a 'dark and gritty' art work for a story which is largely comedic.
My least favourite MTMTE issue for sure but not so tragic that it damages the rest of the series. I hope Hasbro keeps its paws away from Roberts and co's work but unwanted 'suggestions' is the reality that all toy comic book writers had to endure in the past. A reality that Bob Budiansky, Simon Furman and now James Roberts know too well.
Yeah maybe not. The reason why I mentioned it was that it so happened that during the height of the 'movie era' when Hasbro was putting all their cookies in one pot, they decided to have that god awful movie inspired art in Costa's IDW. I saw that as too coincidental.
I always felt that was forced by Hasbro since they like to force what they think 'it's the next big thing' on everything else even if it has nothing to do with it. Kind of like how Hasbro forced to make WFC/FOC 'Transformers Prime' when there was little to nothing to do with it.
I have a theory:
What if Rung is actually a 'load bearer' and that is why he has such an 'odd' alt mode? Maybe he is meant to be augmented with armor for his alt mode to have any sense.
I thought of it given that Minimus Ambus kind of has a 'humanoid' type body which is not dissimilar to Rung's without the backwheel.
Maybe they will eventually find the 'Powered Convoy' armor and get Rung to wear it ;)
That style was purely Don's choice. He was pretty upset at the reaction to it.
James Raiz used to do some TF stuff for DW, and did covers really early on for IDW (Infiltration 0 he did one, can't remember what others, if any).
What you're seeing is James' style. It IS a bit of an odd fit for MTMTE, but overall, it worked for me. But I can understand why it didn't connect for others.
I wouldn't mind seeing Raiz do more Transformers, just not this book, or not an entire issue (using a different artist for flashbacks worked well recently in RID). As I commented before, my view is that this is "real world" since it's all "actual" footage of Transformers, but I'm happy with the regular comical but still very detailed, regular style. Except page 20 ruins this a bit.
Makes sense combined with the fact that he also has the brightest spark on board the ship.
I think that also possibly his alt mode has something to do with the Titans. Not sure what exactly, but I just got this feeling.
I was thinking that with his design and super spark that perhaps his was a jump starter for a Titan or a "sparkplug" or somesuch. But very similar vein of thought.
As for MtMtE #22 being mandated by Hasbro, in a way it was, so giving the art duties to an occasional artist and give the regular team worked out alright. Raiz would not be too bad on RiD, he just does not quite fit the more cartoony style of MtMtE.
Perhaps he will get more work on the third ongoing, whatever that turns out to be (movie? Aligned?)
It's G1 universe.
I'd love for it to be for one of the Special Ops teams we've seen: The Wreckers, Prowl's unit, even the past stories of the super-powered group. So much potential for the first two. It'd be awesome.
But I reckon it'll be Earth-based.
In the past I would have said I'd enjoy an ongoing done in a War Within/Chaos Theory style, but I really feel that IDW has been over-mining the past recently, and they've got to the stage of over-explaining everything and everyone. IMO, and I know not everyone will agree, we're starting to get close to the stage of seeing Darth Vader as a 10 year old kid shouting 'Wizard!' and finding out he built C3PO.
Not Mtmte related (which I'm quickly catching up since discovering it just a few weeks ago) but wasnt the dark energon series due out last week? I should probably catch up with everything before hitting that though right..?
Dark Cybertron #1 is out this week.
Apparently you'll be able to go into this cold, but it wouldn't hurt to catch up.
There's been Dark Cybertron Prelude issues, but they really haven't been of much importance, it seems, other than being ready made for repackaging with upcoming toys.
I think if you know the basics of the situation of the two books, you should be fine.
But obviously, that's speculation until I can say I've read it.
To the second question, actually, despite some potential cast-related spoilers that would be revealed, it doesn't really look like the events of MTMTE are that important to the story of Dark Cybertron. The events of RID on the other hand are essential.
Right. And I probably should wait.
..I guess.
On a side note a friend I'm working with at the moment coloured the All Hail Megatron series. I am So crossing my fingers he ends up back on a Transformers book again ;)
Well thats disapointing. His super detailed art would work really nicely here.
Picked up the latest issue today - so naturally spoilers ahead.
Rung's alt mode... SUCKS :( Yeah, I know it's meant to be funny and witty about the whole functionalist thing yada yada yada... bollocks! It's CRAP! As if I didn't dislike this character enough before, now I hate him even more! Gggguuuuuuhhh... I was hoping he'd transform into a little scooter or something... something that Hasbro can make a product of. But this?!? :~( Well... I suppose Hasbro could just ignore his canonical alt mode and just make him into a scooter bike or something anyway. I can't stand seeing this recurring character that I don't have a toy of!!!
A few of us have already discussed the theory that Rungs alt mode may have something to do with upcoming events and that he function may be far more important than it would be lead on. As far as I am concerned, we have been given a big clue to Rungs importance in the last issue, we just don't know why yet. :D
I just got it. What his alt mode might be. It's a long shot. It's speculation. It's a picture. Should I share? A guess is only a spoiler if it turns out to be true...
Edit: I'm going to start a different thread on the topic
New issue out today, and for the first time in a long while I haven't rushed to get it as soon as possible. Although I'm interesting the crossover in general, it's a new issue of "Dark Cybertron" and that's not the same as getting a new issue of MTMTE.
It's a build up issue with lots of art problems. It does not flow well, it does not read as well and it feels like an event comic. It certainly should not be called MtMtE (what IDW do with the TPBs I do not know) as it features only a few panels on board the Lost Light and bar 3, they focus on Rodimus, Magnus and Brainstorm. The other 3 have some good Swerve and Hardhead/Cyclonus/Whirl stuff.
While I am normally a fan of Livio's art style, it does not work well here in the Dead Universe, it is too hard to tell what is going on, to me, half of his panels looked like black blobs. Raiz's art style would suit other transformers comics, but his designs for prime and a few other main characters just do not sit right, and his overuse of ink ruins otherwise nice art. His framing is top notch though.
I think this will be the issue packed in with Scoop, he got a lot of page time and info dump about the covenant of Primus and Starscream's connection. I am not enjoying Rattrap's portrayal as more or less a New York/Bronx/Jersey mafia grunt. The small item I think will be the most ineteresting was the reaction from Nova when he was told that he could not yet return to Cyberton. Surely Galvatron won't take those kinds of actions well for long. Why don't they just use the same portal Pax and co used to get into the Dead Universe?
And what ever happened to explain why Hardhead (and Jhiaxus) can survive easily outside the dead universe now/ for a while now?
i didnt enjoy the changes in art and some of it looked overdone with the shadowy inks, there is a panel of brainstorm that could be awesome if it wasnt for the colouring/inking
i laughed at the Hardhead Cyclonus whirl Panel..Whirl as a charactr has been fleshed out remarkably well..
and one other word to sum up the issue
Curious
Things really started moving in this issue.
Good to know Shockers has his own machinations (no link to Maximum Dinobots!), though the Metalhawk panels were confusing, I am still not sure if he is still Metalhawk, is under control/posessed etc.
Once again, the characters and scenes on the Lost Light are full of one liners, information and filling in of information, while the Cybertron based scenes are slow, plodding and repetitious of themes we have been bombarded with over and over again in RiD. Rattrap is devolving into some "gangsta" sterotype as each issue goes on. It was cool to see that losing half of your body just makes some NAILS angry; Skybyte for example!
The Dead Universe stuff is intruiging, I think it has been wise to only give us snippets of what id going on there. Good to see an old friend, and personally I wonder if Cyclonus is dying in the Dead Universe as he no longer feels aligned to Nova and co.
Lost Light is the highlight here, the Rodpod was more or less what I expected, Magnus is becoming a character again, instead of a caricature (which I found amusing, but its nice to have more than one aspect of him obsevered). The reveal at the end was all the better for the Roche-tacular art.
It is sad, but the art here is either wonderful or pitiful. Lost Light scenes are brilliantly drawn, inks are not too heavy, the colours give off a good sense of "this is somewhere different -alien even" and the Rung splash page is a favourite, I need to try and get that as one image to use as a desktop image.
The Cybertron pages are awful. Prowl's crest shrinks with every issue, is it a physical manifestation of his demasculinity? The characters lack any detail, their expression is almost back to the DW "dull surprise" levels of inanity. Starscream is unsure if he wants to be in an IDW designed Amarda head or more of a Marvel G1 head. It is too simplistic and devoid of interest for what is going on, it makes the Cybertron pages feel rushed and incomplete. Compared to the other two art styles, it feels as though the RiD portion is truly letting the team down, and I wonder how long the other two can drag the half dead mangled carcass of it along before they tire of it and dump it into a river.
The Livio pages are ok, easy to tell who is who, and the style really works, but Hardhead needs to pick a design and stick with it.
Overall a fine issue, lots of pieces being setup. However it is done in a way that does not feel too fabricated, you know in the back of your mind this is still a setup issue, moving characters into place for alter on, but it is done in an enjoyable way, with enough new stuff and hints dropped to keep you engaged throughout.
...the space bridge inside Megatron feels a bit deus ex machinaish to me... :o
I'm glad I wasn't the one who felt that Metalhawk was acting out of character! Maybe he's just heaps mad cos he can't applaud no more. :p
That's an interesting point. Hadn't thought of that. :o
^Agreed. Soundwave's head is also missing the side parts. It kinda feels like a "Neo-Delbo" style of art. :p
Also agreed, though it's not as bad as when IDW kept flipping between Neo G1 (e.g. Guidi, Su), Old Skool G1 (Chee) and hybrid G1-Bayformers (Figueroa). And I totally agree with what you said about Hardhead's model... also the colours for Frenzy/Rumble! So currently it's back to RIRFIB (which I personally prefer), but it could easily flip back to FIRRIB by the next issue! Reminds me of Evil Betty's magic trick ("I am a great magician!") from Kung Pow: Enter The Fist - "Your shirt is red!" "Your shirt is blue!". :p ;) NYEH-HAR!
It hasn't happened yet, but the spacebridge inside Megatron could give him the ability to draw antimatter from a black hole....
So far the crossover continues to show MTMTE is the better series, with the MTMTE bits the best part of each issue so far. I'm not yet convinced the crossover needs to be so intertwined yet. (Five months of this?). If there'd been an issue solely with the Lost Light meeting up with Orion and the crew splitting up; and an issue of RID with the bots finally investigating the early Sunrise and Shockwave working with the dead universe... Would that have been so bad? Maybe fewer cliffhanger points but the stories could so far act independently (until things really heat up).
Now that act one is done (first third) I think it's ready to ramp up quite a bit
Before I read the next chapter, I did wonder if anyone else saw the last page reveal in the latest MTMTE and thought Unicron? It had to do with him the last time somebody stole Metroplex's eyes. It would be a bit unoriginal but it could be a homage.
I can't really see IDW using Unicron outside of ex-Marvel G1 stuff
