Paint apps/colours do a lot. The one on the shelves at the moment has some atrocious colour choices. I can think of many toys where a superior colour scheme/apps has done a lot for my enjoyment of a figure. For instance, C-01 Henkei Prime is superior in my eyes to the Hasbro release. I like the Hasbro release but it wasn't that spectacular. The life in the Henkei though makes it vastly superior in my opinion despite the base mold being the same.
Of course though if as you suggest you prefer simply the mold, then go for the cheaper one but I think there's still just cause for the Japanese one to attract value. Whether or not that is value to each individual collector is another matter.
