I may be the minority here...
Not keen on the AOE stuff I've seen so far.
From the past couple of movie toy releases here, they're sure to drop the ridiculous higher prices after the movie.
So if you're not in a hurry, just wait a little :)
I think the quality is just the same as any other Transformer from the same year. Why should it be different? As for price, like anything 'new' and fresh, you pay a premium for it. But there is no way I would pay $89 for those Leader class ones.
The figures don't seem to be much smaller than recent lines (Generations, Beast Hunters, Prime, DOTM ). Some of the vehicle bots are a bit too simple and look quite clunky though.
The gimmicky lines are like older lines too, there's basically new Animated Activators and movie Fast Action Battlers on the shelf.
So far at least it seems most of the toys are in the movie so that's a good thing too. Unclear about the Dinobots but that's a set I want to complete, and I'm looking at the rest of the movie cast when I can get then on sale.
More of a concern than size/price are the quality control issues people have been noting. These are a huge production run so I guess more chance for error? Although it's not an entirely new thing over the recent years either.
As far as the first wave deluxe Dinobots are concerned, yes. I'm not sure that they're noticeably smaller, but you are getting a bit more bang for your buck. There seem to be more paint apps on them, the materials used (e.g. Scorn's hard rubber tail) seem higher quality, the engineering is top-notch, and they aren't actually all that much smaller. They are very good and very good-looking toys.
I can't speak to the others, but the Dinobots are the standouts for me.
Just got Leader Prime and Grimlock. Prime im liking way more than the First edition (the bot so bad I returned him) Grimlock looks awesome in his own way. IM SELLING MY VOYAGER GRIMLOCK $40 :D
It looks like a mixed bag. There are some figs that look like absolute gems (Evasion Optimus, Strafe, Scorn and Drift all look awesome) and some not so good-looking toys (Voyager Grimlock, Leader Grimlock and Leader FE Optimus). You also have some average-looking toys (Slug, Crosshairs). As much as I'd like to have a full cast, I think I'll pick and choose quite a bit.
For me so far, I want:
-Voyager Evasion Optimus
-Deluxe Drift
-Deluxe Strafe
-Deluxe Slug (though I might wait for a redeco)
-Deluxe Snarl
-Voyager Slog (if he is indeed a voyager)
-Deluxe Scorn (he looks good and is getting good reviews, so maybe)
Of course, I may hold out on all the dinobots until they get G1 redecos (except for maybe Strafe, he looks freaking awesome).

I struggle a bit to get excited over the hasbro releases with all the 3P stuff coming out. I think that's a sign of me getting old and a little set in my ways ;)
As an example, The two headed AOE monstrosity that is suppose to be swoop does nothing for me. The foc swoop and soar releases are awesome. Again, it's because I'm in my late 30s married with kids I think; Im stuck in my ways and have a specific collecting sensibility now.
As most AOE toys don't fall into my collecting rules I won't be getting many. The Prime's, Bee's, Takara's Soundwave and Galvatron fall into my "character rule", but nothing else falls into that rule and obviously don't fit into my CHUG/MP rule.
Most of the paint jobs are very luck lustre on the Hasbro side. If you do get any I'd recommend the hard to get Takara versions as they really look nice.
My best advice mate: Check out 'Ratbat's Transformer Reviews". There are at least a half-dozen of us with enough time on our hands to have written reviews of the various figures that have come out so far :p And lots of other members have chimed in with their opinions of the figures as well :)
If it's a figure that no-one has bothered to review - that might be an indication that the figure isn't worth it. But in the end it's up to you - one persons crappy figure is another persons pride and joy :D
I personally haven't found any of the AoE toys worth paying full retail for (thankfully I've managed to acquire all my AoE TFs at below full RRP). But sticking purely to 2014 toy standards (which IMHO is somewhat reduced from pre-2011 standards), I would say:
+ Gen Dlx High Octane Bumblebee <--- yes
+ Gen Dlx Crosshairs <--- no
+ Gen Dlx Slug <--- no
+ Gen Dlx Scorn <--- maybe
+ Gen Voy Evasion Mode Optimus Prime <--- yes
+ Gen Voy Grimlock <--- no
+ 1st Ed Ldr Optimus Prime <--- no
Check out reviews or possibly even examine someone else's (try before you buy).
