Among the current live action TF movies, which do you consider the best (or least worst)? ;)
I'm having trouble deciding between 1 and 4.
1 had the wow factor for the first live-action transformation, but 4 has the advantage of no annoying Shia LaBeouf constantly stuttering "no-no-no-no-no-no-no-no-no-no-no-no!!".
I guess I'll go with 4 as a better movie because it does't have all those distracting semi-protagonist human characters that plagued the first (e.g Lennox, Epps and that inexplicably Australian hacker girl). It's a slightly more focused story.
... also because GUN-FACE!!!:D
In order for me 1,4,3,2.
I don't mind Revenge of the Fallen, especially taking into consideration the fact that it was made on a 40 page script as opposed to a normal 160 page script due to the writers strike but I just can't stand Sams room mate. If I was there I would punched his face in within 30 seconds of meeting him.
TFTM gets worse for me every time I view it.
ROTF is by far the worst of them. Watch the directors commentary and special features on the Blu-ray to find out why.
DOTM works OK for me as a "turn off my brain and just enjoy the action" movie. It's still terrible but it is my favourite of them because of that.
AOE I really hate, its a train wreck because of the human parts. The Transformer parts are far better than anything in the other movies, they actually get a tiny bit of character development. I'm getting the Blu-ray mostly because it's a Transformers item, not because I like it.
My order would be 1, 3, 4, then 2. Why... probably because of the opening scene where Blackout destroys the army base and we get to see a Transformer in a live action movie for the first time. I had goosebumps!
AoE does have the 2nd most coherent story of the films. TF1 is more coherent, but also more simple/straightforward. AoE is surprisingly quite coherent for a more complex attempt at a scifi epic. AoE is plagued by the whole "overbearing father" thing, as well as that completely unnecessary "Romeo & Juliet" scene. I'll be skipping that part every time on the DVD (I cringed each time I saw it in the cinema).
As forinsignificant fleshlings^humans, AoE had that really annoying/useless Lucas Flannery*. As annoying as Wang was, at least he contributed to the story. Joshua Joyce** was like that too; totally annoying, but contributed to the plot.

Keep Calm and release iPhone 7
Leo and Lucas suffered more from the "Jar Jar" or "Daniel Witwicky" thing where most of their screen time was pretty useless, and they pretty much just do one thing to justify their existence in the story (but we have to suffer the rest of their useless time-wasting screen appearances just to get there). Wang's moment in the toilet was needlessly stupid, but it was important to advance the story (i.e. passing on information to Sam about the moon thing). Of course the blatant innuendo was completely needless. At least Jerry Wang and Lucas Flannery had the decency to die. :p When I first saw Lockdown incinerate Lucas, my inside voice went, "YES!", and I mentally reached out to give Lockdown a high five. ;) Shane was also pretty useless after rescuing the others from the cornfields. Still, they could've just completely omitted him and just replaced him with a helpful/kind stranger who saw a family being pushed around by suits and offered to help. Or Rollbar. ;)
Optimus Prime was the only Transformer in AoE (or the entire film franchise) who saw character development in that film, as I recall. The other Transformers were all pretty much one-dimensional caricatures or zero-dimensional set pieces who didn't see any character development at all. Bumblebee, Drift, Bulkhound, Crosshairs, the Dinoknights, Galvatron etc. were all the same people at the end of the film as they were when we first see them. None of them experienced any change, other than Prime, who had to let go of his hate, forgive humanity, and learn how to give a truck again. ;)
I could apply this same rationale towards my entire interest towards the Transformers live action films in general. I wouldn't enjoy them half as much as I do if they weren't about Transformers. Having said that, the Transformers action in these films is pretty damn awesome. I feel that the Bay films and IDW comics are on the two extreme ends of what I would like to see in Transformers. Bay films have great TF action, but bugger all story. IDW comics have fantastic stories, but not enough TF action. :o IMHO the G1 Marvel Comics and Beast Wars were a lot better at striking that balance between great TF action + character-driven stories. :)
I agree with Bartrim's order; best to worst for me would be TF1, AOE, DOTM, ROTF. It seems that ROTF is at the bottom of everyone's preference list, which is interesting because ROTF is arguably the most visually spectacular (they crashed ILM's computers!). Proof that visual effects can't beat story-telling. ;)
--------------------------------
* Even having seen the film 3 times, I had to Google his name -- my brain just remembers him as "try-hard Texan hippie with Californian accent" or "wannabe Ninja Turtle" :p)
** Again, I just remember him as "Steve Jobs." That's how forgettable these human characters are.
Easily the first. ;)
Having not yet seen AOE, I'm still confident that I can vote for 1 as my favourite. I completely agree with 5FDP in that the first scene with Blackout is still the single greatest scene in the movie franchise.
I don't collect movie figs but because of that scene I truly wish for a leader class Blackout :(
2 and 3 are just pure tripe. After 2 I decided not to ask anyone to go with me to see anymore because they are that bad and cringeworthy. After 3, I decided not to bother with them at the movies at all. Because of this, AOE will be a torrent job for me. I refuse to support such bad filmmaking.
^
100% agree.
I actually got into collecting in the first place with movie toys when DoTM was already out. My girlfriend got me a Deluxe Space case (forward swept wings reminded me of a TF I had as a kid), so of course I needed an Autobot to stand up to him (DoTM deluxe Specialist Ratchet). It was a slippery slope from there.
Blackout was such a huge character and he opens the whole movie, yet he never got a leader class figure! I do love my little cyberverse Blackout with Scorponok:p, but I'd give my left nut for a good leader-class Blackout!
My order would be 4,1,3,2.
So yeah, Age of Extinction is my favourite.
Pacific Rim
1, 3, 2, 4.
Although the order might change after a couple of AoE rewatches. Hard to rank having seen first 3 multiple times and number 4 only once.
First one is still the best - largely for the initial "wow" factor. The first Blackout scene is still the best scene of the whole franchise. Puts a smile on my dial everytime.
(My second fav scene is OP VS Meggs/Screamer/Grindor in ROTF).
I know this for the live action flicks, but I'd be interested to know where people would rank the '86 cartoon movie in comparison.
(Me: 1, 3, (86TFM), 2, 4.
I just couldn't wait for the 4th movie to end while watching in the cinemas. I hated it. I doubt I'll even "torrent" it.
While I hated RotF and was bashing the movie (especially Devastator) for the next few hours after watching it - I don't ever recall wanting it to hurry up and end during the movie.
That being said - and with previous statements of Blackout getting a special mention, I will say 1, 3, 2, 4.
I've only seen 1, 2 and 3, and rate them in that order.
So... if Age of Extinction were a better film, you'd 'reward' the people who made it by downloading it rather than purchasing a copy? Unless you meant downloading as a temporary means until the movie becomes commercially available. :)
Disclaimer: I am not endorsing downloading films even for temporary ownership, but I do feel that there's an ethical difference between downloading content with the intention of it being your only copy, and doing it as a temporary means until you can get it legitimately. FWIW I personally do not own any copy of Age of Extinction, only ever seen it 3 times in cinemas, and I have every intention of purchasing the DVD when it comes out. :o
1,3,4,2
I voted 1 but it was quite close for me as I enjoyed 3. 1 takes it for me mainly due to being the first and like many have mentioned the opening Blackout scene rules. But I may be in the minority but I thought DOTM was decent
Ouch :(
:p
Gok, let's not bother going into ethical differences. The simple fact is that there are people out there who download movies and music illegally every minute of the day. If you were going to give your 2 cents to every person you came across who downloaded music and movies trying to win an ethics battle, then good luck to you.
By the way, why doesn't Trent cop anything??
Sorry to drag you into this, Trent! :p:p:p
i think the the Movie Companies and the industry in general should wear alot of the blame for this oh and lets not forget the poor actors in the movies and the tiny wages they get.... Firstly the movies these days are over priced even digital only copies, and not to mention months or weeks delays in release to us here in Aus compared to the rest of the world..
if these companies were really bothered about illegal downloads you would see worldwide similtaneous releases for affordable prices and if you saw it at the cinema you should get a discount when purchasing a home copy.
anyway,
1st movies all the way. then i dont know what is next i really..
ROTF was ok some great fight scenes and some terrible terrible characters
DOTM i liked the story they were trying to tell but not sure if it really worked, RHW annoyed me as tid Shia..
and AOE i really didnt like the whole Knights angle and dinoponies but then i am also stuggling to remeber what i actually liked about it...
That's ok :) . But I made my point crystal clear. I will not support the joke that the TF movie franchise has become by parting with my money. Now, I don't necessarily have to download AOE, I'm just as happy to wait until it is on TV. My life will not dramatically change if I have to wait a year to see a mediocre movie with ads.
I download for the simple fact that a hard drive takes up less space than a shelf full of DVD's ;)
Because Trent's standards makes sense to me. He's saying that a movie won't get his money if he doesn't like it, thus implying that he would pay for it if he did like it. You've said that if you don't like a movie, you won't even watch it (let alone pay for it), so does this mean that if you did like a movie you would download it (and still not pay for it)?
I can understand people not wanting to pay money for something they don't like. I'm just wondering what your standards are when it comes to films that you do like. :) In other words, what would your position be if Age of Extinction were a movie that you liked?
Then you have suckers like me who, despite not loving Age of Extinction, am still going to buy it at full price as soon as it comes out... just because it's 'Transformers'. :p
The Blackout scene in the first movie was awesome but my favourite scene out all 4 movies was the arrival of the autobots in the first one. That made me feel like a kid again :o :D
^Agree. :)
I think the strength of the first movie is how it captures the spirit of the first season of the G1 cartoon quite well. The story is simple and straightforward, but it works as a basic popcorn action roller-coaster flick. The sequels try and expand this scope and make things more complex, but just make a big mess in trying to do so.

1,4,2,3
In no 4, I still don't like the idea how Joshua becomes a good person suddenly. it felt really crap in some ways. How the new decpticon are revived are bad in the way they transform now.
No,3 is the worst because of that English girl who cant act and doesn't fit at all in the picture, no thanks to Spielberg decision to kick Fox out.
Yeah, but can you blame him? She compared Michael Bay with Adolf Hitler... which is just juvenile (not to mention unprofessional), but considering that:
* Steven Spielberg is Jewish
* Michael Bay was adopted and raised by Jewish parents
* Co-star Shia LaBeouf is also of Jewish descent
...it comes as little surprise that Spielberg took offence to that comment and ordered Bay to sack her. Fox has since apologised.
I neither download nor buy Bay Transformers movies on DVD. Instead, I make up a bunch of signs and have a day trip sticking them in the movie section of JB Hi-Fis around the city. Like so...

not sure about best. but lets go with least worst probably 4 if only for the g1 nod
But i would put transformers age of extinction as number 1. Just my opinion
4,1,3,2
I like 4 more because it was probably the less dorky of the films and the transformers actually had CHARACTER
