Finally some news! Even if it is only a render...
Hopefully they shrink down those forearm hinges to make them less bulky though.
Ooo, yeah. Ooooooooo, yeah!
Looking at that image, it looks like the only difference from the 10th Anniversary figure is the addition of (some) articulation in the hands. A bit disappointing to be honest.
Yeah, i'm feeling the same way, I was expecting a nice clean beast mode and some voodoo magic transformation to robot that would blow me away!
I do like, but Takara better fix those damn arm hinges, because even the original toy did it better!:

Bloody G1 fans with your bricks and their square panels that fold away neatly. We Beast Wars fans accept that some compromises have to be made. The laws of physics apply to these toys, and so if portions of the robot-mode have to show in beast-mode despite the best efforts of the designers, then so be it.
I'm a massive Beast Wars fan -- moreso than G1, which is why it's riding my ass so much!
You mean its just the same toy?!
I am not a G1 fan by any stretch of the imagination. I like interesting and innovative Transformers toys, however, and it's starting to look like that's something the Masterpiece line is allergic to. I'll be sticking with my perfectly lovely 10th Anniversary Primal, thank you very much.
And what's this one that fellow member Krayt purchased overseas a month ago?

EDIT: Found out this one has his bum behind his head.
As Seibertron is pointing out, these are CG renders. I think this is the first time we have gotten a MP shown to us at this stage of development, he's probably still a long way off.
Well, tbh, if they don't want negative reactions to early CG renders, they shouldn't be advertising the product with early CG renders. I'm all for positivity but at the moment there's no evidence that this is any improvement over the existing toy. I WANT MY MP OPTIMUS PRIMAL WITH REAL GORILLA FUR, DAMMIT!!!!
yeah real fur that i can brush together with my daugther's barbie, bratz dolls , and little ponies :D
anyway tentative release is summer 2016 which may be around August
I also agree with others in thinking that this toy looks too similar to the original to make it feel worth getting. I also skipped the 10th anniversary version for the same reason.
And honestly, I think that this is a compliment to the original Beast Wars line, because it was such a well made line that toy engineering some 15~20 years later still hasn't sufficient surpassed it. BW was just that ahead of its time. As you all know, I personally don't find any of the Classicsverse BW figures to be better than their originals; I find them to be either inferior or on par, but I've yet to come across a modern version of a BW toy that I felt surpasses the original.
And as much as I love Beast Wars, this is why I prefer to see G1 characters being updated as Classicsverse and MP toys, because the "bricktastic" G1 toys need updating. Not so much for BW toys, because today's standards in toy design/engineering basically stems from BW anyway. But yeah, judging from what are admittedly still early conceptual pics, it doesn't look substantially different or better enough to convince me to pre-order it just yet.
Having said that, I hope that this toy does include:
* Alternate face with the faceplate closed. More toy-accurate, and there a few moments in the cartoon when Primal used the faceplate.
* Arm cannons that can deploy from both forearms without the hands flipping back (similar to RM Beast Convoy)
* Prime Jets that can fold out from the back. Again, similar to RM but done better.
* Swords with blue handles and silver/chrome blades.
* Amazon/Hasbro Asia exclusive toy-accurate mutant face
* Chest able to open and project his Matrix
* Have the shoulder cannons flip out without having unsightly back panels hanging underneath (as on the original) or exposed grooves on the back (as on the RM toy). It will be interesting to see how they might achieve this
I think it'll be tricky for Primal to be made as weell as the G1 toys. If they go for a show accurate look for example, ther's not that much they can do without altering him too much IMO. The show used scanned toys for the general shape and design of the characters didn't it? That doesn't allow THAT much for proportion changing and whatnot that we saw heavily in the G1 cartoon.
Imagine if the G1 cartoon had used some time-travel scanning tech and used the original toys in it. Would we be so impressed with Masterpieces based solely off the look of the toy?
I am still very eager to see how this pans out. Although I wasn't a big fan of the BW toys until Transmetals got in on the action, I was a fan of the show (eventually).
Really looking forward to this release! I hope we get a few other characters along the way.

Disagree here, as I think many is already skipping this.

Personally I think if they did that using the G1 toys for the toons.... it would lead to a whole lot of bricky issues, also another would be the size/scale would end up ridiculous .... e.g. Blaster vs Soundwave... Devastator vs Ultramagnus plus articulating such bricks would really be hard and time consuming for the animators, at least the beasties have articulation so they get an idea how they can make em move or pose....
To the haters, words from the bot himself:
Bemused Optimus Primal
Challenge of the Gobots was more toy-accurate than Transformers (except for the goofy faces), and yeah, it was all just animated bricks on screen.
Dude, I don't think anyone here hates this toy. I don't think anyone here even dislikes it. I think the general consensus is more of just pensive reservation, because this toy doesn't seem - for now - to be leaps and bounds ahead of the original Ultra Class toy. When you look at MP toys based on G1 TFs, they're often significantly massive improvements over the original G1 toys, both in terms of engineering and show likeness. Just look at Ironhide and Ratchet. :)
MP Optimus Primal doesn't appear to have achieved this similar sort of "leaps and bounds" level of improvement over the original toy. Yes, it does look better, but not as improved over the original BW figure than G1 MPs are over the original G1 toys. And honestly, there's no need to be upset over this, because this is really a compliment to Beast Wars, as it just goes to show just how freaking awesome the original BW toys were, that even modern Classicsverse or MP level of engineering still cannot significantly trump the originals. This should serve to remind everyone of just how revolutionary Beast Wars toys were when they first hit the scene in 1996-97. This is why Beast Wars is often referred to as the "Transformers Renaissance," and it set the standard for toy engineering ever since. Even today I still encounter certain design features in current Generations and MP toys that I first encountered during Beast Wars.
I love Beast Wars and I love Optimus Primal, but this is going to be a relatively expensive MP toy. Ultra Class Optimus Primal remains one of my all time favourite Transformers toys which cost me less than forty bucks. If I didn't already own the original toy, I'd be all over this MP like a rash. I'm currently really undecided about this toy, TBH. I'm also waiting to see what the advertised RRP for this toy will be too.
But really, each time you hear someone say that a modern day "update" of a BW toy doesn't seem to be much better than the original, take it as a compliment to that original toy. It shows that Beast Wars has withstood the test of time, whereas G1 toys are badly outclassed by modern standards. The original Ultra Optimus Primal toy still holds his own today, whereas G1 Ironhide is just laughable.
Essentially, Gok, your argument boils down to Beast Wars toys not needing updates because the original toys are still comparatively good.
But this isn't a matter of need. This is a matter of deserving. You spout the importance of Beast Wars in the history of Transformers, but would rob it of an opportunity for it to be shown. "The toy isn't a good enough improvement over the original so it shouldn't be done at all..." Well I'm sorry. Beast Wars deserves every bit of attention it can get.
I don't think Gok is saying it shouldn't be getting a look in, I think he's saying it's going to have to do something special to take the place of the ultra Primal in his heart.
I can see the point he's making, the wow factor comparing a G1 toy to an MP is a big step. where comparing a generations G1 toy to an MP g1 toy isn't quite so impressive.
I'm very happy for lovers of Beast wars, I don't think the toy should have flocking, it will rub and wear and then there will be bald spots. I have the impression that Takara are going for the screen accuracy of a smooth finish which I think is a lot more achievable. Might dip into the uncanny valley for some though.
Hopefully down the road there will be more Beast wars Masterpiece toys and for fans of other series, Masterpiece toys from those lines as well. As a lover of the G1 line myself, I will be happy if they make 2 or 3 Moulds of G1 Characters as masterpiece per year for the foreseeable future. sharing the production space around other series suits me just fine.
Hell yeah, Beast Wars deserves acknowledgement as one of the most important aspects of the franchise. But what it deserves isn't a simple remake of an already stellar toy. It deserves a full line of Generations figures, or a new cartoon series based on it (like AEC, Animated, and Aligned have been for G1) with accompanying toy line, or a video game, or something, anything, new. This isn't what BW deserves. It's nostalgia, pure and simple, like everything in the Masterpiece line, and Beast Wars deserves better than that. It deserves something that acknowledges how innovative, fresh, and controversial it was when first released by being just as innovative, fresh, and controversial. Transformers as a line is trading way too much on nostalgia these days, and ultimately that will harm the line. Beast Wars doesn't deserve this, it deserves better.
I didn't say I wanted a new BW cartoon series per se. I want something that does for Beast Wars what the cartoon series this century have done for G1, so based on that but with new ideas and refinements. Beast Wars was innovative and shocking when it was released. It's time the franchise got back to ideas like that rather than plumbing the same well all the time.
I love beast wars and will get this Primal no matter what. But even I have to admit. It doesn't really seem all that different to the original. At least it makes me less depressed that I couldn't get that Japanese legends re,release
Hopefully as development progresses this will look more impressive
Size/scale wouldn't have been any more of a problem than it already was, but I think you're missing my point.
Which was this
If we consider MPs to be a combination of G1 toys goodness as well as including the media representation of a character, then it will be harder for that to be accomplished for Beast Wars as the CG models were made from the toys, with minor teaks to adjust proportions.
Sure there were exceptions, but in the case of Primal, the CG model and toy are already both fairly similar. Therefore, providing an MP quality Primal figure produces more of challenge than providing an MP quality Prime.
Things are getting pretty heated in here already...
Meh.
This is not for me but I think beast wars DESERVES the recognition in the MP line and especially in an anniversary year.
I have noted before I have never watched the show so can't offer an opinion but the legacy it has left says it all. I won't be buying them personally but surely they could produce 2 or 3 MPs for the legion of fans
Yeah, ya never know unless ya try, and good on TakaraTOMY for at least having a go. :) At the end of the day we all vote with our wallets, and if enough people buy this toy it will encourage TakaraTOMY to make more. :D While the majority of BW toys were fantastic, there are a select handful of figures that were more questionable and are probably in dire need of an improved update.
Bring on MP Powerhug/Retrax! ;)
This is kind of like me wanting an MP Galaxy Convoy... the original is so generally received as a good figure its hard to improve, in Galaxy Convoy/s case the only thing I can see them doing is maybe make him a bit bigger, ankle tilts, wrist articulation and more balance in Super Mode. Optimus Primal all they need to do is make him bigger, more accurate weapons and a non-faceplated head.
I think it looks awesome and will deff be adding to my Masterpiece collection
What's the best place to import MPs from for us Aussie fans?
I'm a huge BW fan it's what brought me back to TFs. But I'm rather a little disappointed with this even if it's only a render.
The upper arms still look like the original toy.
The butt flap is silly and those feet. Looks like his feet have grown extra limbs or something. It just looks off to me.
I'm going to wait for shots of the prototype cause this render is not really doing Primal justice.
This is still early stage of the CGI and it looks like to mainly work out the engineering and transformation (to test if it will physically work as a toy, like what you have in Solidworks). Details are too be added and aesthetic tweaks can still be made. And that glossy surface render doesn't do the design any good because this is not meant to look good anyway.
I think if you're complaining about this being not much of an update from the original toy, you're missing the whole point of this being a Masterpiece altogether. Like some people would even say, MP Star Saber wasn't much of the update to the G1 toy either. If you've owned G1 Star Saber you know they're right. But does it stop the Japanese fans from loving this Masterpiece figure to death?
Just my 2 cents.:D
