We got my son a set of Kiss figures. They are the same size as Star Wars figures. They all have instruments but the drum kit was just a papercraft thing you fold.

I didn't think they looked that good so I decided to make some drums.
I did some scale measurements and tried wrapping thin black chopping board around wood to get the circle. It was too hard to bend small enough and make a circle.
I cut drums out of polystyrene and wrapped black card paper around it. I then painted the card with gloss black paint.

I then used the thin plastic chopping board to make the cymbals. I then painted them gold.
I made the skins out of thick paper.

I then cut small squares of the black card and painted them silver and glued them to the drums to look like the hardware that holds the skins on.

I did some dry brushing on the skins to make them look used.
I then started making the legs and stands for the drums and cymbals. I made all of the stands out of the pegs that hold weed mat to the ground. It is a bit thinner and easier to bend than coat hanger wire.

Last night I finally finished the assembly and I am fairly happy with the results. There are bits that annoy me but so be it.

I want to build a stage for them next when I get time and materials. I have bought one of those lights that flashes to music and want to incorporate this in to the stage as well.
I love this. The stick marks on the skins is an especially great touch.:D On such a small model, that could not have been easy.
Cool! :)
What does the paper copy look like? Recon yours looks best. What they should have done, include drum kit and sell it for a bit more.
Looks really neat all finished :D
The first picture is what it came with.
The figures I got on special but if they were full price it probably wouldn't be worth the extra money they would cost.
LOVE IT!!
My only criticism is your calling drum heads, skins.:p and just in case you care the little silver hardware bits are called trucks I believe.
ingenious manufacturing of the cymbal stands.
the overall styling of the kit really suits the ensemble.
Haha that's cool!
Very nicely done. Now the band needs a stage. :D
That is next. Currently house painting. Then I will start.
I do have the rhinestones for the Kiss logo at the back of the stage thanks to M-Bot.
The stage for the figures and drum kit is in progress.
I have built it out of a pine base with ply wood sides. The base warped when I cut it off the longer piece so I soaked it in water and left it under my car wheel for a couple of days in the driveway. Nice and flat now.

I then made the amps for for the stage. I taped them in to blocks of four so I could line up the tape and speaker cones. I then spray painted them with chrome spray paint I have for the Kiss axe bass I am making my son. I also built the drum riser.

For speakers I tried drawing/painting 12mm circles but they were too small. At OfficeWorks I found 14mm black dot stickers. They definitely don't bleed under the stencil.
https://mf9qgg.sn.files.1drv.com/y4m...&cropmode=none
I have also added an early version of the foldback monitors but they were too wide so I have trimmed them down a bit and not put the stickers back on yet.

As a backdrop over the drummer and in between the amps I have made a Kiss logo out of thick cardboard and painted it. The diamontes has not been glued yet but they normally have spotlights on the logo so I hope they will twinkle with the lights I will be using.

For the figures, the QC is not good. They hardly stand up because of the platform shoes and one figure has a leg that is slightly short (not sure if that is human accurate). I have drilled holes on an angle and embedded wire into the board and glued it. This will then work as pegs to go in to the holes on the bottom of their feet. I also put two sets in front of the drums so the guitarists can lean back to back while playing.

Love it, looking forward to seeing the finished stage
So I finally finished it yesterday. I am uploading the photos to my OneDrive to link to but I am actually happy for once with something I made. I still see issues but I can except some of these.
So, I decided to add lights as well. I couldn't find my small soldering iron and ended up stuffing the circuit board for the first set of lights. The wire thickness I bought didn't help either. I got the first lights at Target a year or two ago for this. They don't have them any more so had to get them from Amazon. This is what I used.

There are 6 LEDs in the light. 2 green, blue and red. It also has two modes. Cycle flash where it rotates each individual colour and then mixes two ate a time as well. The other mode is react to sound/music. The LEDs were soldered to a board so I had to unsolder them and all wires. I was going to make spotlights for the LEDs which would hang off "scaffolding". I black spray painted 6 plastic shot glasses and glued a round mirror to the bottom. I then used strips of disco ball stickers to line the whole inside of the glasses. Because the mirrors were cheap the glue damaged the backing and they no longer reflected. I ended up doing something different.
I was trying to work out a safe but accessible space for the base of the lights with the battery compartment to go. Other than gluing it on the outside walls I couldn't think of anywhere. Then my stupid brain created more work for me when it said to embed it in the drum riser. I had to cut a hole in it on an angle so the base would line up flush. I then had to fill the gaps and paint it all again so it was not obvious it was there.

I also needed somewhere for the switch to go to be accessible. I ended up embedding it in a bit of wood I glued to the side of the drum riser to make it flush with the left hand side.

After the spotlights failed, I decided to use the dome from the top half of the lights as my lighting rig. I screwed a piece of dowel from the front of one side to the other to hang them on. I ran the cables from under the drum riser, through a hole, along the outside of the wall and back in again at the lighting rig. I used a hacksaw to cut the dome and made tops out of flexible black chopping board with mirrors double sided taped to them for extra reflection.

Looking forward to seeing the final product
Because the foldback monitors were the same colour as the stage I repainted them in a dark grey just for contrast. I also added a strip of wood to each wall at the front on the outside. I wanted it to look like the scaffolding holding up the lighting rig. It also helped to hide the wires running up the outside.

https://kxitgg.sn.files.1drv.com/y4m...&cropmode=none
I also finished gluing the crystals on to the logo.
https://lhgspg.sn.files.1drv.com/y4m...&cropmode=none
I made the microphone stands out of the wire used to hold down weed mats. It is slightly thinner than a coat hanger. To make the microphones I took a long sewing pin with the round plastic head and cut it down. I jammed it in to some wire off cut and glued it. I then put glue on the stand and wrapped the wire from within a bread tie that I stripped the plastic off around it to lash it in place. Once it dried I made the body and holder of the mike out of air dry clay. When that dried I painted them.
I also mounted the microphone for the lights at the top of the wall so it had the best chance of picking up the noise. I then screwed and glued the amps in.

I ended up running the microphone wire up the amps off to the side. I glued the logo in and drilled a whole for the microphone wire to go in to and glued them in.
Then when I looked at it the area at the top of the amps looked weird because it was the same colour as the amps and didn't look right. So I spent an hour and a half on Friday night making curtains to go there.

This first one is the first option for the lights where it just rotates through.

Outstanding!!
I love the pegs you have in the floor to position the figures in different positions and poses.
I also love the rest of it.
the drum kit is especially nice
Thanks mate. It took many hours and quite a few good TV series to make but my son cried when he saw it so it was worth it. (I did ask him "Is it that bad" just to make sure he liked it)
I forgot to put a link to this picture. This is one of the pics where I got the stage design from.

AMAZING work. Love it!
Great stage production. I truly enjoyed the work in progress shots too.
