Surprises from the IDW Panel at NYCC09

Some big and unexpected news from the NYCC regarding Transformers.

IGN has posted their rundown on both Transformers and GI Joe.

Most of the rundown consists of information we already know, on many comics already released, such as the RotF movie prequel comics, Maximum Dinobots, and even Spotlights Jazz and Drift.

However there is also the first reveal of Spotlight Metroplex, to be written by Andy Schmidt with Marcelo Matere on art duties.

Also revealed is the AHM Coda, a four part mini series that IDW looks to be using to attempt to try and get AHM and the Furmanverse to mesh together better. (so a 12 issue maxi series then needs another 4 issues to help set it up :rolleyes:).

Also coming out will be a IDW Beast Wars comics collection and a 16 page poster book.

Awesome. Another writer. I'd love to see how Metroplex comes into being or his role in the IDW verse. Hopefully he's at full size like Omega and not Fort Max

I don't think that's a problem. It's just a prequel that's all of how all of it came to be and I like it. It goes back over the mysteries set in AHM.

some good news there, especially spotlight Metroplex (love Metroplex) and AHM coda is a good idea, as i think IDW lost people, when all of a sudden you have a planet full of decep's and left wondering what happened to the autobots and how certain characters are still in one piece. So hopefully this will answer all those questions.

Spoiler joke?! AHM issue 11 ends with Drift laughing as Megatron is about to destroy him. He reveals that New York City is actually a Transformer and he just woke him up. Last page, splash: New York City stands up in robot form: Metroplex!!! Oh wait, that's the end of Space Pirates!/Spoiler joke :D

If it had have happened in the G1 toon it'd be very believable, but I doubt McCarthy ever read the G1 comics, he didn't read the IDW ones he was meant to be following on from. :rolleyes:

Well remember that probably-wont-happen-but-maybe-could-spoiler Trypticon was built by the Constructicons out of a human city in FFOD. So maybe I'm wrong about which giant robot New York City will transform into? Maybe Metroplex will be needed to fight New York/Trypticon?? End :D :p

While I guess it's good that thier going to mesh AHM with exsisting continuity, I'm not a big fan of all these bridging series.

Between Maximum Dinobots, the Movie comics and this new series, most of IDW's titles are begining to feel like filler, where the writters can't do much becuase of the constraints of the next movie or comic.

I dunno I'm seriously thinking of trying to scale back my comic collecting this year.

Ryall explained somewhere that perhaps Hasbro AU and Hasbro US didn't communicate well but from his side, the news was that the toy is still proceeding. I'll find a link tonight

As STL already said, Ryall apparently indicated that Hasbro Au and Hasbro USA do not have a good line of communication. and that:

As strange as it may sound, although I'm currently not a fan of the Drift character, I want a Drift toy - just to justify all the hype and exposure that they've given to the character. (-_-)

Flippancy aside, is Drift really that bad? I mean, I don't see anyone harping on when Grimlock marches over a bunch of drones or Scorponok deals with Hot Rod not even on panel. It seems that resentment that AHM took over from "-tion" fuels a lot of these snipes. Powerful characters are not new. Even Monstructor as combined mode handing it to omega back in the Prime spollight was over the top.

Drift in comparison has had one moment of "coolness". Just b/c he's not a fan favourite and can get away with doing "silly" things doesn't mean we should keep bashing it. Grimlock is a perfect example of a character that fans cling religiously onto w/out ever questioning his actions and "bad ass" nature. We've heard the complaints, do we really need to hear it where its not even about it?

I think it has to do more with how this character was hyped, promoted and presented to us than anything he has done in fiction. There is also the factor that many people are dissatisfied with AHM and since Drift has been a focal point of their marketing, it is easy to Focus on Drift in the same way that Jar Jar is focused upon for all the flaws that the prequels had even though Jar Jar became a more 'background' character for eps II & III.

I think you have it there it's the marketing that really drives a lot of this anti Drift feeling, the way he was promoted, along with the rumours of a new Toy based on the IDW left many with the Impression IDW regarded Drift as the coolest thing ever to happen in Transformers. It feels as if Drift is nothing more than a marketing ploy to draw people in. Perhaps he would have been more welcomed the fandom had spotlight Drift came first and then he appeard in AHM.

And as far as Drfit being a focal point for some of the dissatisfaction with AHM, yes I'd agree that to is a factor. To me it feels like the hugely diverse TF universe has been reduced to just the favoured cast of Geewun, and instead of seeing the odd cameo, and even a little development of any of the characters from the later years we instead see Drift, replacing all of them.

Ultimately though the Drift spotlight that will make or break the character, and I will be getting that spotlight because believe it or not I and I think everyone else would like to see Drift become something, up untill then though and we get something solid I suspect the Drift bashing may continue.

comparing to Jar Jar not because there are any similarities between the characters themselves but due to each being a focus of backlash from a significant amount of fans who are generally dissatisfied with the Star Wars prequels.

Get over it. No, really. Don't like Drift? Fine. Don't make it your mission to diss the guy. Leave to what he does in the comic/his Spotlight. You ruin it for everybody else - whether or nto they've made their mind up about it. TFs come and go and deal with the fact that Hasbro liked the idea enough to give it a go ahead.

I agree STL, and I'll preface this by saying I haven't read AHM yet (I'll read the first trade when it is out which I think is in a week or two). But from all the bashing of Drift I've seen there doesn't actually seem to be much that he's done to be annoying. From the sounds of it he hasn't stolen the show or even had a whole heap of characterisation yet.

I'm just as pissed as the next guy that it seems IDW have let the existing universe get screwed up a bit. But I'm happy to get new TF stories (just would have preferred it to be in a separate continuity) and I think getting a new toy of a new comic character should be a good thing for the fandom.

I hope that the issues focuses on Drift, rather than throwing a whole heap of spanners and "huh?" moments regarding the IDW timeline like Spotlight Blurr did.

I agree on that too. I may not like how the character and even the spotlight is being promoted but whatever happens in there, it will cement Drift's perception for better or for worse.

It's too bad that some people feel this way. From my involvement in the series it's my understanding that it happened the other way round: A new character was needed to fit a particular aspect of the story - Guido's design needed to be approved by Hasbro - Hasbro were really excited about the design concepts and started talking toys - IDW were excited that Hasbro were excited. He was never designed to be the coolest guy ever...

...everyone knows that's Cliffjumper :p

Personally I think it's just fun and exciting to see a toy of a comic book character. Being a comic fan - am glad to see comic characters getting the toy treatment. Either way, I'm looking forward to all the IDW upcoming TF stuff :) But - I still haven't read spotlight sideswipe! *SHOCK!*

OH! And it's great to see you here again Hutch :) I just find it sad - though predictable that people are essentially bringing with them the trukknotmunkyy mentality- Personally - I'm just enjoying the ride - both Furman and Hutchison's stuff :D

I certainly havent read any or bought any of AHM, what and who is this Drift guy? well whoever he is, it would be cool to have a comic character to be translated into a toy.. as lcz said.... just like what they did to Primus. Personally though I prefer that Primus toy be a tad bit taller like supreme Starscream or energon Omega Supreme. :D

I stop monitoring this topic after about the 10th post, and it just descends into character bashing...

Along the lines of what STL said, if you have a problem with something that you can avoid or ignore, do so. Don't obsess about it, as it will just spoil everything else related to it for you. And others don't need to see it over and over again if you have expressed your dislike before.

And take note of what Hutch said, as he is on the inside to actually know what really happened to bring that character to where it is today.
