Hmm, the new price is not much more than a Xbox but I think I'm still going to go to the Xbox as my choice of next gen console, unless the PS3's backwards compatibility has been restored and improved (rather than progressively removed with each release). Maybe. Hmm. Ask me again in a few months. I can't decide!
No hope in the world of them restoring PS2 compatibility I reckon... all done to reduce price, hence the new version slimline PS3.
I suspect that they've probably moved the power unit to an external one and therefore also saved component costs on the need to have a cooling fan as well.
Smaller form factor and different disc loading mechanism are also new additions to cut production costs.
Up until now, you could have a 360 and a Wii for the same price as a PS3, so of course Sony had to do something about it.
I have both the 360 and the PS3, and I must say that the Xbox gets used for games more whereas the PS3 is an expensive living room ornament/back up Blu-ray player.
Get the PS3 if you want to get into hi-def Blu-ray movies but otherwise, the 360 is fine if you only want to play games.
There's ongoing discussion of the current games consoles which still hasn't helped me make up my mind. :) But yeah I doubt backwards compatibility would come back which is a shame, I've been playing my PSX games on my PS2 the last few nights and like that functionality.
You can only watch Blu-ray porn on a PS3.
If that doesn't sway your decision then nothing will.
Yay! :D
Why you think blu-Ray was born? Porn, porn, porn.
 I hope that will come down soon, seeing as normal Blu-ray movies are dropping in price and you can get some titles for $15.
Nah, it was because of the need for improved picture clarity since the average size of TV sets has drastically increased.... porn's an added bonus! :D
But then again, blue movies ----> blu ray? Hmm....
:o "Why is your Dual Shock 3 controller so sticky?" :o
I'll not be touching other people's consoles from now on...
Does your PS2 have a problem playing PS2 games? :D I'll admit i use my Wii's backwards compatibility with GCN, but it'd only be a minor inconvenience to plug my GCN back in if the Wii couldn't play them. Especially considering how often you feel the need. It's not worth swaying your decision imo.
Of all the things u could spend 80 bucks on, porn would have to be the last thing i'd pay for. You've heard of the internet i take it? ;)

it looks like, it uses the "same" power cord as the newer PS2 slims?
note:
got this picture from http://au.playstation.com/games-medi...as-a-new-look/ and i added the additions to it ..
hope, i do not get anyone into trouble for using it.:o
also, it seems we are also getting PSN Network Cards in ether $30 or $50 options.
http://au.playstation.com/ps3/hardwa...Network-Cards/ &
http://au.playstation.com/games-medi...ork-Cards-FAQ/
About time i reckon, as i did not like the "idea" of putting my card details over the internet.:D
Yeah probably but then again, I imagine a Blu-ray drive would consume slightly more power than a DVD drive, so it may be slightly different in amperage.
Old PS3 had the power unit built in whereas it looks like they've moved the power unit to an external unit... hopefully it's not as chunky and heavy as the Xbox 360 one.
I guess the positive thing is that for those that buy a unit from overseas can simply replace the ac unit as opposed to using a step down converter.
I know, this is coming from someone who dose not know much regarding this.:o
But.. I was told and read on the net, that the "Phat" PS3 could be pluged in anywhere in the world "as long, as it had the right plug to fit into the wall of course" aka... Universal Power Supply of sorts.
though, it could of been a misunderstanding...:o
Also, after re-reading these expected Specs...
From the link i got the pic from, i don't think it will have an external PSU

My PS3 is an overseas model (Asian region 240v) that I got a month after Japanese launch since I wasn't keen on waiting almost months for the Oz release.
My one had 240v printed on it and came with different power adapter plugs for the different regions.
I did eventually read that all PS3 had multi voltage for worldwide usage with the exception being the plug, however, unless you're a qualified electrician and can test it, you kinda risked blowing up your expensive ($1k) toy.
Playasia still advertise the Asian PS3's as being either 110v or 240v so it may probably be best to err on the side of caution.
My apologies everyone, especially G1Optimal :o
Did some more research as opposed to speculating and it seems the PSU is still built into the unit... still dunno how they managed to get the thing to lose 2kgs though...
Here's a link to Gamespot which shows one being unpacked and displays the box's contents.... no external PSU!
Gamespot
not a problem about the 2nd post thing..:)
The only reasons, i can only logically think of is mostly due to the size..
- Less materials used, becuase of the "shirking" of the Components/System.
- Probably, dose not need as much of a cooling system as the "phat" because of the small size.
- Also, something to do with smaller Chipsets (45nm on the slim apparantly ) using less power therefore being cooler "or something"

Also, I just noticed "this" video on au.ign
PS3 Slim Unboxing
and dose not look like there is one.. guess this answers that question .:)
Edit:
You definitely are a "The Last Second Sniper" aren't you ..;):D:p
So who's gonna get a new slimline one?
I'm thinking about it since my original PS3 is coming on 3 years old in December. :D
Possibly me and my Brother...:)
Group buy anyone? :D
I just checked the one I have and its limited to 220-240 volts, so it wouldn't work in Japan/America.
I will probably get a slimline, haven't got one of my own yet. I hear rumours of backwards compatability through Emulation as well...
I see they are removing the option to use other operating systems on the slim. Bye bye Linux....
$499
I remember reading on Kotaku that Sony actually filed for some sort of "PS2 software emulation on PS3" patent just a couple of months ago. This could mean two things:
1) They'll offer PS2 titles as downloads only from their network store. :o
2) They patented it to stop 3rd parties from offering similar emulators, so you cannot play PS2 discs/roms on the PS3, and have to purchase the games again from their network store. :o
That second option was the first that sprang to my mind.
The thing that annoys me the most with the PS3 is before it was released, they were hawking the backwards compatability thing all over the place. Then the option just faded away. If I had pre-ordered one, I would have demanded my money back thanks to false advertising.
With a bit of luck, someone will make a converter or something like what has happend to PSP, but considering how no-one has been able to hack the PS3 yet, I wouldn't hold my breath.
Both those options are a slap in the face for loyal fans. :(
Hopefully they'll just Do something to let us keep playing our classic games on their new console.
Well as an early adopter, I got one of the original PS3 (albeit an original 20gb one, since upgraded) and it came with the full PS2 "Emotion Engine" chipset (ie the PS2 processor as opposed to software emulation seen on the Oz release verson) for backwards compatibility (although I've never used it since it's region locked to Asian region PS2 games - lol) :p
Hmm, if I had to pay to get the classic games on PS3... i wouldn't be totally against that. As long as it's not too much, and that the graphics are upgraded in some way or some other bonuses are provided. For instance I'm already planing to get the next gen version of Marvel vs Capcom 2 and the SFII HD remix version. If they could provide those missing PC-only levels from the earlier Tomb Raider games I'd be happy too.
or similar looking "if not old style" kettle cords..;)
"heard, that from someone selling Commodore 64 floppy disk drives few years back" :D
I like the idea of Backward Compatibility and i hope they do bring it back eventually, if not at least into the PS4.:)
and sure, i wouldn't like to buy the PS2 games that i have again:mad:, but...
Thinking about it
- as long, as it isn't "that much to buy"
( would even like it even more, if there is some kind of discount "if" you get the games you already have again)- it is upscaled to "HD Resoloutions" .:)
I Don't think, it will much of a problem for me.:)
and if the did this to
Ace Combat 4: Distant Thunder(leave the Landing bit Intact)
Ace Combat 5: Squadron Leader (hopefully, fix the landing bits to resemble Ac4)
Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War (also hopefully, fix the landing bits to resemble Ac4)
i would get them again.:)
plus i might be interested in getting Ace Combat 3:Electrosphere and Transformers: Beast Wars that was on PSX again if they fix up the graphics.;):)
Koller concluded that backwards compatibility "won't be returning.”
I expect them to do PS2 games on the PSN, I just hope they don't gouge the prices. The Xbox Originals on Live were priced pretty well, too bad the emulation was spotty.
On second thoughts, If this is true about Backwards Compatibility
The Reason Why There is No PS2 Emulator In FW 3.0
source:psinsider.e-mpire
I suppose, it would be understandable ....:)
If you're holding off buying a PS3 because of its lack of PS2 emulation then seriously you need to reassess whether you want one at all. You are buying a PS3 to play PS3 games, not PS2 games. The reason PS2 emulation was dropped to begin with was because the emotion chip cost money which in turn made the PS3 more expensive to manufacture. PAL PS2 emulation did exist in software form but even then it was never 100%. I have a PS3 with the software emulation and games such as GT4 didn't even work 100% (frame rates were choppy). Sony even had a website up detailing which games worked/didn't work/kinda worked which shows that it was never 100% to begin with. Add to the fact that the PS3 has never had a memory card port to begin and it means even if you did have PS2 emu, you couldn't use your old saves on the PS3 anyway (frustrating for GT fans who'd gained all their licences and unlocked all the rare cars.). So really, if you want to play PS2 games, stick to the PS2 and use the PS3 for what its primarily designed for - to play PS3 games.
