5FDP's Creative Corner

I thought that I might post up some of the pictures that I drew back in 1991 for you all to look at.

These are obviously free-hand sketches based on the artwork published in the G1 Marvel comics. I used to sit down at my homework desk each morning and just sketch... why, I don't know. I just felt like drawing at the time :)

Unfortunately, drawing is a skill like most others - if you don't use it you loose it. There would be no way that I could draw anything like these now :(

I see you're also a big fan of Wildman. :) The shading's quite impressive in those pics.

Im betting you still can, just a bit of a polishing again. Its like riding a bike :D

You know what, I never really thought about it (being a fan of Wildman) back when I was 16, and just read the comics for enjoyment. I didn't really concern myself with who the writer was, the colourist, the artist etc. I don't know if this sounds weird to some, but honestly, the thought never even crossed my mind.

Now that you have posed the question, I guess the answer would have to be 'yes'. The organic look and feel to the characters appealed to me and gave them a sense of humanity and expressiveness (while still maintaining the appearance of massive friggin' robots) which you could relate to.

Bee amused me. :D

Considering the amount of times I have moved house and state, I'm surprised too :) The majority of my G1 collection was actually mine as a child as well. I had strict parents to thank... I guess.

The pages are showing signs of yellowing which doesn't show on the scans. Most of them are about A4 in size.

Bumblebee would have to be my personal favourite. I got the emotion in his face pretty spot on.

I really like your style of shading. Good stuff. :)

Very nice interpretation of Wildman's work - I can recall where most of those shots came from in the Comics.

I LOVE Bee and Prowl's expressions! They're fantastic :D
Also, the detail of the characters' hands is really impressive. Hands are the bain of my artistic existance :p

I'm sure that you would recognise the majority of these as they were sketches taken from single panels that displayed only the one character in their 'hero shot'... aside from Bumblebee who looks like he's singing 'New York, New York' :D

Just out of curiosity, I decided to go through my comic collection to revisit the source of my drawings to see how accurate I was. Below are some of the drawings from the Marvel comic series that I based my drawings on.

Which ish is your Cyclonus pic copied from? Cos that's the only pic which I can't link with the original source for.

Ah yes. :) Your only non-Wildman inspired art! :D (don't blame you... I'm not a huge fan of Delbo's TF art)

Yes comic Galvatron has a method to his madness, Cartoon Galvatron is just loony mad :p:p I kinda like delbos art, given the proper coloring and inking. Except on his drawings where when a robot gets blasted they fold 90º backwards - totally ridiculous pose IMO (somehow infuriates the heck out of me)

Yes... a lot of Delbo's action shots made his characters (humans and Transformers alike) look like marionettes. Thunderbirds are go! Then there's his generic Transformers which just look like Asimov-esque robots; completely devoid of any alt-mode kibble. Kinda like blocky protoforms! d:

Nice! Anyone who used to draw Fangry has my respect (I know I did) I like the G1 TF's that seemingly molded mechanical and organic parts together, there were only a few before Beast Wars rocked around. Also Wildman captured this mix of flesh and steel well in his art.

Thanks Lord_Zed. Agreed... with Pretenders the amount of 'facial' expressions available to the artists because they had an organic shell helped tell the story in the later part of the G1 Marvel series. The readers were able to relate to the plight of the Transformers, especially post issue 75 when Cybertron was seemingly tearing itself apart. It remains my favourite comic series to date.

as well as spit, diodes hanging loose, and so far his drawing of starscream in Plane mode ( flanking triggerhappy and mindwipe) is IMO the best plane drawing Starscream ever got. Unlike that fat plane in DW ( before bombing Superion) era. Ive yet to see one as linearly clean.
