Wow now I feel really old! My first console was the Sega Master System, with Alex the Kid built in. Since then I've had the Sega Megadrive, then ditched Sega for the Sony PS1 and have had every iteration since to the current PS4.

Pppffftt... that was the Sega Master System II! I grew up knowing kids who played with the Sega Master System... uh... I! :p I never owned one though, as I was a Nintendo kid. I've had:
* Game & Watch
* Famicom
* NES
* Super Nintendo
* Gameboy
* N64
* Gameboy Micro
Heh, my daughter and I love playing Janken with each other. It's the Japanese version of rock paper scissors, only with a few extra rules. ;)

Pfft, whippersnapper. C64 vet here. I have decided to hold off until I buy a PS4.
I have one more game on my PS3 to knocj off until I am satisfied I have finsihed my pile of shame for it.
Then I'll be all over new Batman, Transformers and probably unchartedrerdredrerdredredrd.
Haha you got me mate, forgot it was the 2nd Master System. So you were a Nintendo kid.
I was Sega. After the Megadrive my brother wanted to get the Dreamcast but I said lets get the Playstation instead. I got that call right and then have had every PS console since.
Back to the topic, I'm up to Blitzwing and loving it so far. I thought I wouldn't like the vehicle attack move but you need it to win so I'm used to it now.
Mine was the Atari 2600 too :p - though it was the black version
That is one of the few problems I've found with the game on my first run through. I was playing Grimlock and I had to race Motormaster and didn't get an opportunity to change characters so I was mashing the button non-stop to make him run. On my second go through the game I made sure I was playing as one of the vehicular Autobots after the Blitzwing fight.
I'd say my first console was the Atari 2600 too however my parents bought me the KO version so it doesn't count :( My favourite game was Beamrider.
first console for me was a Coleco Vision and then Atari 2600 and then cassette loading with the C64 lol
While we're at it our first home computer was called "MyPC" and it was coloured a garish green. It was a steaming pile of you know what....
Yea I love it to bits.. from a time when games were designed not to be finished in a day.. I still try to finish the MK II ladders every now and then.. but because its a port straight from an arcade version it is border line impossible.. Goro flogs me and tells me to insert more credits.. The only bad thing about the master systems is that they dont work on new TVs.. had to install different outputs in the back of it :(
Have to say that I grew up in the age of home video gaming and probably experienced most of its offerings. Next door neighbour had the Atari 2600, spent hours on pitfall, Winter Olympics, formula 1 grandprix, dodgems, space invaders, sea quest..., had a friend and cousin with Commodore 64's, one was cassette the other floppy disc. As for me personally, we scored an Amiga 500, now that made me a popular kid in the neighbourhood, so much epic gaming... And loading times for any games requiring anything over 1 disc, then my other neighbour got a sega master system 1, from memory it had snailmaze built in, remember games like action fighter, secret command, Shinobi, and oh my god Wonder Boy!!!. Cousin got a NES and remember playing mario and trog. Then another cousin got an IBM, remember playing prince of Persia and the original platform versions of Duke Nukem. Then the Mega drives came out and I was lucky enough to pick one up (Mega Drive II that is), and all because of Mortal Kombat!.(A-B-A-C-A-B-B) Since then I've picked up a PS2 and PS3, mainly due to the DVD and Blu-Ray players. I've got no interest in the PS4 as I see no additional benefit in Technology (still just a Blu-Ray player which breaks the mood from all previous models) and also pissed that they didn't make it backwards compatible for PS3 games (I mean seriously they both use Blu-ray technology)
Yep, like I said, I was fortunate enough to experience it all, and man there was some fun times :)
Think my progression was:
Atari 2600
NES
Super NES
Nintendo 64
Wii
PS3
With my Gameboy and PC off to one side :)
Like many others, I haven't bothered to upgrade to the next generation of systems and probably wont until my kids get old enough to want one
That's awesome Trev!
My Progress was:
Atari 2600/Coleco (they are contemporary)
NES/PC - Always a PC gamer so for many years it was also a big part of my gaming.
SNES/PC
N64/PC
PC
PS3
WiiU
After N64 I became a 100% dedicated PC gamer for several years. Most of the console games released at the time did not interest me much. Then the original Wii came out but very soon after the Dolphin emulator on PC had matured so well that it technically surpassed the Wii console itself. I played several Wii Games as well as Gamecube on the PC in HD with updated effects and graphics.
After that I bought a Phat PS3 very cheaply (because it was broken but I was able to fix) and started playing the PS3 exclusives that had caught my attention which were really just a few games as everything else had been released on PC and often with superior graphics.
Only recently when I decided to collect Nintendo consoles did I get a Gamecube and Wii.
The last console I bought is the Wii U and mostly due to the great exclusives. I actually use the Wii U a hell of a lot more for games than the PS3.
For handhelds
- Gameboy
- Pocket Gameboy
(Huge gap)
- Nintendo DS (which I used an R4 card to have apps like a smart phone as I only had a normal Nokia at the time)
- 3DS
- New 3DS
Only recently as I begun collecting consoles did I buy a Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance and GBA SP.
My first was the Master System 2, I've recently just got back into them in the last year or so, been collecting anything from Sega master system onwards to the PS1, but also have a wii U
anyone got any they want to sell? mainly games :)
After waiting nearly a month, it finally arrived, Nintendo's most infamous console ever made..The Virtual Boy!
Nearly a month ago, I saw a Virtual Boy console going reasonably priced on eBay so I decided to bid and to my then perceived fortune, I managed to win it for a decent price. The seller's description had it as "Tested and fully working!" so that also gave me some confidence to bid. The photos showed a Virtual Boy in reasonably good condition with some minor cosmetic work needed.
Unfortunately upon arrival yesterday, I noticed that the Virtual Boy came without a battery pack. This immediately caused me a bit of concern since the seller heavily implied its inclusion with the "fully workig" item description. This also worried me as if there is no battery pack, how was it tested and does it even work?
I needed to verify its functionality so I went to Jaycar and bought some electronic stuff to Macgyver together my own Battery Pack. I was able to boot up the console but as I feared, the left lens wasn't working so far from 'fully working'.
As a result I have requested a partial refund from the seller but I suspect he will try to be a jerk about it since his reply after I mentioned the lack of power supply was 'I never said it would be included' despite saying the unit was functional.
At least I have an interesting restoration job at hand although it is more than what I first bargained for...

That's a cool piece Kup... :)
I'm assuming you paid via PayPal? If the seller wants to be a douche, just claim against him... I dare say you'll see a remarkable turn around in his attitude.
Finished restoring my Virtual Boy! Fixed the faulty imager ribbon that was preventing one of the lenses from working by refluxing it a few times.

All games I own so far with Virtual Boy Wario Land playing.

holy crap you actually have a virtual boy. what's it like??
It is unusual and although I don't suffer from motion sickness, playing on it a while and then stopping makes me feel as if i just woke up from a bad night.
The red and black is ugly but one can get used to it plus it is a somewhat novelty of the VB. The 3D effect is somewhat similar to that of the 3DS but still in a kind of 2D way. It is kind of if a paper cutout is placed more towards you further in front of the background. I guess similar to how opening credits text looks in a 3d movie
I believe you can now play emulated VB with the 3D effect using your Android smartphone and a cheap VR casing such as Google Cardboard.
I ended up getting a partial refund which I used to get the tools I needed to opening the VB for repair as well as obtaining a proper battery module.
The seller played smart as he knew there was no way around it but to cooperate in compensating me for what was not revealed about the unit.
It was a good opportunity to learn about how it works anyways, despite the end result not being very impressive, the technology behind the VB is - Did you know that there are no 'screens' for the lenses? The display is generated by a single row of LEDs that are reflected through a synchronised vibrating mirror to get the image. Without the vibrating mirror, it would just be a single row of dots.
It is necessary to get a very high frame rate that prevents blurring since technically all the system is doing is lighting a single row of pixels for each eye. It is possibly better in this regard that modern VR headsets.
Here is the actual LED display ribbon:

This is all that it truly displays, the game image you get is literally mirror trickery:
http://furrtek.free.fr/noclass/vbtvout/la.jpg
What produces the game image is the mirror for each eye display that vibrate back and forth a at an incredibly fast rate which is synchronised to the LEDs. So the display ribbon shoots the LED dot image to the mirror which it rapidly changes angle so that the 'pixel' is projected at a particular part of the mirror and reflected into the eye piece at a desired position - This happens an insane amount of times times per second and eventually draws the image. From a human eye perspective, the whole screen is drawn although in reality, its just a single row of blinking lights.
Here are the mirrors:

Goddamn techno wizards. Nintendo will make the first hologram console, calling it now.
Does anyone own an Arcade machine? (stock pic provided as an example only).
No, but I really want this 2000+ game arcade machine
http://www.casa.com.au/arcade-tables/
Maybe they'll make it, but they probably won't come up with it themselves... remember the tech inside Virtual Boy was actually invented by a company called Reflection Technology. A lot like the Wii Remote too ... there used to be a great story about it's inventor on CVG, but their site is gone... just a mention of it around the place now: http://kotaku.com/5961480/sony-and-m...-save-nintendo
This is a great article on the VB: http://www.fastcompany.com/3050016/u...20-years-later.
I've thought about it too. I did look at an ex-arcade machine on eBay once but couldn't justify buying it
