Default Toy Review: DotM Optimus Prime w/ Comettor

Toy Review - Dark of the Moon Voyager Optimus Prime with Deluxe Comettor

Series - Dark of the Moon
Size/class - Voyager with bonus Deluxe
New/remould/redeco - remould (Optimus) and redeco (Comettor)
    Wave - N/A
    Released - June 2011
    Approximate Retail Price - $29
    Approximate Size - don't know
    Allegiance - Autobot
Alt-mode - Truck and Lunar Buggy
Main Features/Gimmicks - battle hooks, two buster cannons (Optimus); suspension (Comettor)
Main Colours - red, blue, grey (Optimus); white, gold (Comettor)
    Main Accessories - gun (Comettor)

Got myself this set the other day and I really like it so I thought I'll review it. For some reason I find myself really liking the packaging... how weird.

The Optimus is a retool of the Battle Blades Optimus Prime from the Autobot Alliance line. He sports a highly unrealistic paint job, I think if they didn't put the moon and stars on the windows then it would have been pretty decent. Nothing much to say other than it's a good mold and everything pegs together nicely. One thing to note is that the nubs for his hooks are slightly too big, causing the hood to be unable to clip together fully, i.e. the hood has a gap down the middle. Apparently this affects all the figures.

Robot mode is a lot better, with only the moon and stars on his chest, which is very easy to ignore anyway. I like the dark grey used, much better than the original. Optimus has a retooled (faceplate-less) head and hooks instead of blades.

His matrix is now cast in orange plastic and I think it actually looks better in this colour.

He retains his superb articulation, arms are hindered when the hooks are retracted. I love the metallic blue highlights and the colour of the blue plastic used.

Overall, if you can ignore the irrational sparkly windshield then this Optimus is great.

Comettor is a repaint of Landmine from the 2007 Movie line, the packaging claims he transforms into a 'Lunar Buggy'. The colour used it nice, and I prefer this colour scheme over Landmine's and Armorhide's (from ROTF).

Comettor is exceedingly easy to transform, the robot mode is great, and he can now hold his gun (which seems a bit small in his large hands). The gold plastic is closer to light brown/orange but he still looks nice.

Comettor has excellent articulation, better than a couple of more recent figures. This guy has got joints everywhere, and is very easy to stand.

Optimus and Comettor together in vehicle mode...

    ...Robot mode

    Overall:

I think this set is well worth the money you're forking out for it, for $29 at Kmart, you're effectively buying a deluxe and getting the voyager free. If you can put up with the moon deco on Optimus then this set is a must, because the plastic colour choice on him is superior to the Battle Blades version. Comettor is also an excellent repaint. You can hardly get a better deal (unless you live in America).

I only got mine for the Comettor. Though the price was good luckily.

I checked this out today. I may pick this up as this Voyager optimus prime has a nice deco, as well l prefer the look of this mold instead of the new DOTM mold. Will display nicely with other DOTM voyagers. At $29 its a good deal. The deluxe figure 'Comettor' looks nice also, the grey colored tyres are a unique aspect.

It's a bargain, no doubt about it.

I'll bite if I can figure out a way to remove the (lame) moon and star effects from Prime.

Those effects are indeed lame. But at $29 for $80's worth of value... I'm not complaining! Btw the Kmart catalogue says that their toy sale doesn't start til the 30th, so I'm assuming this toy won't be sold at $29 until then? Or is it currently selling for that price now??

It's $29 right now and I think the moon and stars on the windshield is just stickers.
