Hey guys, anyone done this before? Any advice/tips where to go through and things to watch out for. Is it safe and reliable?

    Cheers

Many of the sellers will say no international or proxy bidders - you also need to consider fees of the proxy bidder unless you know somewho who is buying for you.

Many of the G1's get purchased by buyers from singapore and the majority of all the decent diaclones these days are purchased by chinese based bidders.

Auctions also get extended when bids are placed in the last 10 mins which is a killer.... also users can have more than one id.. I dont know how that works but overall is a lot more safe/reliable than ebay!

If you want to to get the 'best deals on G1' you should get to know some more experienced collectors and they might be able to put you in contact with other collectors who may be able to help if you have specific wants. I'm pretty sure most long time collectors would say nearly 100% of the best pieces come from private sales or trades.

Yeah, it can be good but you have to pick/know your item(and i'm sure you definitely would), and paying for both lots of shipping can be pricey (the guy i deal with only sends parcels express with tracking which i can understand but=$)
Overall most things have worked out well, but you don't really have the option of that last bid in the final seconds. (or any disputes for items not as described)
    just in my experience

According to this poll, 13.64% of folks here have obtained their vintage toys from private sales/trades. And equal amount have obtained their vintage toys from regular local retail stores like Kmart, Target etc. (I'm part of that group ). The majority (63.64%) get their vintage toys from online secondary sellers.

Maybe get someone else who's willing to post by cheaper means. Either way, postage from Japan gets relatively cheaper if you post in large boxes. That's why I currently have a bunch of toys purchased in Japan just sitting for me in Japan... waiting for some other pre-orders to come through, then get the whole thing shipped off in a single lot. The wait is excruciating though! XO

People are can buy from multiple sources. I don't believe that poll was about 'best G1 deals'.

Congrats that you purchase from local retail stores! I've lost count how many times you have posted that on this board.

Hmm... fair point. In that case for me it would definitely be from private... erm... not trade or sales, but other kids who used to collect/play with Transformers, but when they got to about high school/uni age decided that they'd "grown out" of Transformers and decided to give them to me. Their loss, my gain. I'm sure many of us have experienced this -- nothing's better than free
