Really I remember my Mum renting one of the Aliens movies on VHS from the video store for me when I was around 14 or so and it had R18+ on it. All I remember is at the end Sigourney Weaver committed suicide by falling into a vat of something. Thats the one time I watched one of those movies, never seen one again.

That's Alien³, which still should have been M or MA depending on the cut. (But that doesn't mean it wasn't scary or disturbing.)

When did the MA rating come in though? I remember AO tv shows & movies as a kid (I used to watch Fast Forward on TV which was rated AO when I was in grade 5) , but was too little to pay attention to cinema/video shop ratings.

I can't remember dates but the classifications on TV were different than the cinema when I was a kid, then at some point they started using the governments rating system for the cinema on TV. Now TV is back too their own thing, replacing MA15+ and R18+ with AV15+ and AV18+.

1993, MA(15+) came in, so with Alien³ (a 1992 film) it was M in the cinemas, but then MA when the Director's Cut was released.
