Actually i'm still surprised to this day that some guys actually think they DON'T exist and need a constant reality check.
To me it was always logical that there'd be SOME females out there who'd be fans. Logical in that you'd be hard pressed to find something that was exclusive to one gender only.
Personally, it's not that I think they don't exist, obviously Transformers appeals to both males and females, but I think it appeals to personality traits more commonly found in males. So when a female fan presents herself, it more often than not, comes across as a surprise to the male fans. This prompts some of the more gullible male fans to seek confirmation.
