it does..
my other option is to just get a phone that sends messages and takes pictures like a nokia bar phone and to not worry about all the fancy smanshiness and leave that to the iPad (since it does go most places with me)

Yeah, that's what I was inferring when I asked what your alternatives were. Think of this though: If you're going to pay $x per month anyway for service, most phone companies are happy to offset the value of a handset for you for anywhere up to $600, so think about getting some value for your monthly payments. If you prefer prepay, aren't sure you want to stay with the same carrier, or need very little credit per month, than avoiding a new handset and contract makes sense.
Being a fairly new iphone4 owner I have a question. I put my iphone on a speaker dock at work to play music, then take it home every night, then plug it into the dock the next day at work. So I'm plugging it into this dock with about 95% battery then it charges while on the dock. Will this affect will this have on the battery? As in will it be able to hold it's charge if I do this or will it not be able to hold any charge?
Thanks

iPhones, and basically all modern electronic devices with rechargable batteries use Lithiom Ion batteries. These batteries don't suffer the renown "memory effect" which means that you will get a better charge if you do a full discharge. Basically an LI battery simply loses a bit of its maximum life year after year. Excessive or trickle charging shouldn't effect this. However, due to its design, it's important that the cells get a workout at least once a month, meaning that you should use the battery for close to its end at least once a month. Other than that, you should be fine.
Apple themselves indicate that after 400 charges, your battery should still hold 80% of its former maximum life. As to whether toping your phone up from 95%-100% each day counts as one of those charges is tough to tell. There should be some [hopefully free] utilities on the app store that lets you see how many times your battery has been charged. Macs show this in System Profiler. Many times if my Mac is only down to 95% and I plug it back in, it's not considered another charge. However, whether that count relates to the above statistic… unknown.
Battery replacements are available, both from Apple and third parties. I wouldn't worry too much. Just remember to do a full deplete once a month, which I suspect might naturally happen for you anyway.
Thanks for that Jay.
