I don't think there was anything wrong with his statement.
Pretty much it is what it is.
For you, you can refuse to pay anything above RRP while for some of us do not entirely go by this method as mentioned sometimes it takes a while for someone to change from "meh..." hmmm... "okay, I think I buy it"
I am pretty Happy with Hasbro Metroplex vs Takara's version and this is where price differences does tell a story.
The Masterpiece is however sad to say we are more swayed towards Takara's version because at the moment there isn't a choice for the cars.
Come back and revisit this question again when Hasbro makes a different decision and you see answers changing.
There is no denying MP1 was a superior toy at the time it came out and I'd be amazed if anyone into Transformers at the time did not buy it. Thing is when MP10 came out most people didn't jump on board because they already had MP1/4 and I include myself in that number too as my interest in Transformers had waned at that point having skipped MP6-9.
But when the Hasbro one came to Toy's R Us on a sale at the time I couldn't pass it up for $112.50 and after playing around with him ever since I've come to like him much better then MP1. Looking back knowing what I know now I probably would be happy to pay more then that for MP10. I wonder if both toys came out at the same time which would people buy? But if I never bought the Hasbro MP10 I probably would never have got back into Transformers, well maybe just Soundwave but I wouldn't have bought the cars at all. The new scale was what is really enticing me now and was why I paid an inflated price for Sideswipe because I had the Hasbro Prime that and I didn't think he'd be re-issued.
I mean obviously new fans would buy MP10 now as he's the only one you can buy now new. I think if they both came out back then and both sold at the same price I probably would have bought MP10. As for the MP's I bought they were...
Hasbro 20th Anniversary Optimus Prime (Retail some local store)
MP2 Ultra Magnus (Retail Target)
MP3 Greenscream (Online somewhere forget where)
MP4 Optimus (Online somewhere forget where)
MP5 Megatron (1 from Ebay and 1 from BBTS plugged)
Hasbro MP10 Optimus Prime ($112.50 TRU)
MP11 Starscream ($229.98 Ebay)
MP12 Lambor ($184.45 Ebay Didn't think he'd get re issued at the time)
MP13 Soundwave ($189.99 BBTS)
MP15 Ravage & Rumble ($72.85 BBTS bought 1 for a friend for slightly cheaper shipping)
MP16 Buzzsaw & Frenzy ($86.83 BBTS)
MP17 Prowl ($90 RK)
MP18 Bluestreak ($84.32 RK went with cheaper shipping)
All prices above include shipping if applicable, I do not know how much they cost without shipping as at the time when I started logging all my expenses in excel I included shipping on the entry since that is the total I paid for the toy.
I skipped Red Alert because I missed the boat when they came out initially and I didn't want to pay inflated price for Red Alert especially since he's a pretty minor S2 char.
I have both MP01 and Hasbro's MP10 (and I've seen/handled TakTOM MP10 IRL), and I still find MP01 to be the superior figure between the two. But that's not necessarily a criticism against MP10 per se, because obviously that toy was designed w/ the trailer, Roller & Spike, so the cab/robot was always going to be less flashy than MP01 which was only ever the cab/robot. So without having to divvy the budget up with a trailer or Roller, they could focus everything on the cab/robot.
The reason why I skipped TakTOM's MP10 was partially because I already have MP01, but also because of its price (approx. x2.25 the price of what I paid for MP01). But when Hasbro's MP10 came out here for about $35 more than what I paid for MP01, I decided that this was a great price and I bought it at full AU retail.Even better for those who bought it for less.
Depends... if MP10 was sold at TakaraTOMY's price, I would get MP01. If it were at Hasbro's price, I'd get MP10.
Can you calculate what % of what you paid for MP17 was for postage, and then maybe just use that as a guesstimate of what you paid for the rest of your MPs? <shrugs>
Definitely if there was a mp04 and mp10 and then if there is a Magtron mp as well I think anyone's logical would be....
Buy them all. lol
