Default Gen one Japanese continuation DVD releases

I'm intrigued by the possibility of seeing the continuation of G1 thru headmasters series etc

Seems like a number of classic characters pop up there.....even after being killed off

My question....anyone seen the madman releases? What's the English dubs like? Do voices even close to match the original actors etc?

I have no idea with regards to the series and the quality overall

    Any help appreciated

I mentioned this elsewhere recently, but no the dubs are not good. They weren't produced for Western audiences, but for English speaking Asian audiences. They get the names wrong (like the red autobot tape player named Billy) and are not reflective of the G1 voices, I think there's a very limited cast too. The music is totally different. Most people either find the dubs hilariously bad or just horribly bad.

As for the content: With Headmasters I got through only about a third with subtitles before I got bored.

Masterforce on the otherhand was great (subtitled that is), more traditional Anime in style, and with a heavy human focus (the robot that looks like Optimus Prime is not Optimus in any way) which can put some people off but I enjoyed. Masterforce as a series is my fourth fave TF cartoon. Haven't watched much of Victory, the first ep was a bit over the top.

    Cheers for the info

I might actually give it a miss on the strength of that. Doesn't sound my cup of tea

The "English" (if you can even call it that ) dubs are awful. It's loaded with mistakes and sound nothing like the US series cast... or even like the English language. It makes the dubbing in "Monkey" look like a Shakespearian performance by comparison. The translation (again using this word loosely) quality is so bad that you're honestly no better off just watching in raw Japanese with no translation. It's as if the writers had no clue as to what the Japanese dialogue was saying so they just made it up. Thankfully the DVDs also come with an English subtitle option which does a much better job of translation, plus you don't have to torture your ears with the awful dub voices. The Japanese cast is the same as the Japanese dubs for the US series (e.g. Genda Tesshou as Convoy etc., although Arcee, Wheeljack and Perceptor have different performers).

I think some people watch the dubs just to laugh at them. At them (not with them). Otherwise it's considered a form of human rights abuse.

Update my post. Masterforce (as a subtitled show was great IMHO).

Read some more info on the dubs here.

Japan didn't receive the 1986 movie until 1989, which is why you still see characters like Wheeljack in the Victory series, even though he was killed during the battle of Autobot city in the movie.
The US version of the cartoon wasn't perfect either; just look at episodes like Carnage in C Minor or The girl who loved Powerglide... Or anything produced by AKOM

A friend of mine was shagging a guy that worked at Madmen so she was able to get me the box-sets of all the Japanese cartoons for free I did find them hard going though and I ended up getting very bored. Gave up before I reached Victory

Carnage in C Minor - Worst. Episode. Ever. To be honest I didn't mind 'The Girl who loved Powerglide' - the only major problem I could remember with the animation is Ramjet going "Please, let us try to find them again' without his mouth moving
