Default What is the Primary Motivation for the TF's you select to collect?

What is the Primary Reason for the toys you collect?

Just thought it might be interesting to see ‘why’ people collect the particular figures they do. As Griffin pointed out in another thread, over 400 official Transformers toys have been released this year, and I don’t know of anyone who got every single one. So why did you pick the ones that you did?

Please note this poll is about the Primary Reason you choose to collect the figures you do. However if you would like to list Secondary Reasons I’ve put provision for that in the thread as well

    So for me:

The Primary Reason behind the toys I select to collect:
•G1 Homage: I’m a sucker for anything that is a new version of a G1 character. My love for G1 has never abated and anything that extends and builds upon the classic characters used gets a massive tick from me! Hence my disapproval when they have used G1 names willy-nilly (Beast Wars Inferno, Energon Mirage, Bayverse Bonecrusher etc).

The Secondary Reasons behind the toys I select to collect:•If it’s G1. If it’s G1 I wants it! I wants it now!
•The quality/complexity of the figure. There were a LOT of movie toys I bypassed just because of their inferior nature or they were far too simplistic for my liking.
•Military Vehicles: I’m a sucker for tanks and helicopters in particular. Due to being in a millions year old war, I’m always surprised that more TF’s don’t disguise themselves in this fashion so their alt-mode is also combat effective.
•Wanting to complete a specific set. Hence why even though I hated the figure, I gave up this year and bought G1 Blot so I could finally complete my G1 Terrorcon set.

So what is the motivation for the Transformers you deem worthy to add to your collection?

Ohh this one's easy! - Love for a specific character (you want every Shockwave, Soundwave, Megatron, Starscream and Jazz, in no particular order.) 100%.

There aren't really any other or secondary reasons for me. All other characters I have in my collection (except for some of the very first ones I got), such as loose ones that I might use in photo comics, were selected randomly due to what was available at the time, or that I received as gifts.

Though with my primary motivation in mind, I am a sucker for figures that are rare and hard to come by.

    Good question.

I have a few apart from the see it, like it, buy it way of doing things

    Specific Characters:
G1/G1 inspired Prime. If it has blue legs, a red torso & transforms into a flatnosed truck, i want it. Same goes with TFP Airachnid, Breakdown & Sinnertwin.

    Toylines:
TFP Legion Class, 30th Anniversary Generations, TRU Commemorative Series, TFC Henkei Decepticons, which i keep sealed. All i need is a Lucky Draw Galvatron to complete that line up.

    Homages:
I dont have all of the G1 figures & have no intention of completing that series. All of the figures i want, i'm close to owning & everything else would be buying to say that i have a complete collection. If i find the new interpretations interesting enough, even though i dont have or want the character its inspired by, i may buy it.

My main selection criteria would be the media they are refer to. My current TFs not in storage.

Assembling a classics roster for the animated movie (so far just Autobots but Uniquetoys Sharky and Maniaking will probably start my Decepticons). They don't have to be Hasbro/Takara. It's classics so liberties need be taken on how screen accurate they are.

And my Prime collection is whoever appears on screen. I didn't buy any of the Beast Hunter spikeformers and except for Predaking, I didn't get any of the dragonformers. And it's not just the toys themselves that are important to the look. I'm sanding and painting Shapeways weapons for Megatron and Breakdown so they'll look better.
Any figure that comes with swords demands wrist articulation.

Same here. As someone who mods their figures I'll buy a figure and then may buy a second to be customised later. But usually I'm looking for a decent representation of a character.

That's why I put in my initial post to feel free to list a bunch of your secondary reasons - as many as ya like But the question is 'What is your primary, numerous-uno, tippy-top, all-time number 1 motivating factor'. Well... it's not phrased like that but you get the idea

To be honest, I had trouble myself and I came up with the damn thing

I have in the past collected toys from every series with toys I like.

    Now my rules are:

Must be G1 character with canon of some sort confirming they are in the G1 Continuity (any G1 continuity including Beast Era and IDW). Since FOC is Aligned continuity (sorry Trev but the events don't fit into G1 at all) I was going to skip it till they got repurposed by IDW into IDW G1 because homages are not enough for me.

Or must fit into my character sub displays Optimus/Rodimus, Seekers, Megatron, Soundwave or Bumblebee. In these the figures can be from any Continuity but must represent a character of the same name.

I still have an RID, Cybertron and Movie display but won't be adding to them.

My motivations have shifted since I started collecting again, in 2007, as an adult.

Say what you want about the Bay-verse movies, but they reignited the passion. I started wanting the '07 movie cast, and limited myself to Autobots, in order to place some sort of cap on my spending. My wife bought me a Universe voyager, and through that, I discovered the classics range.

Since my first love is G1 (a child of the '80's), I decided I wanted as much of the classics series, again, just the Autobots. Now, I'm on to MP's, from MP08 onwards, with some third party figures as well, Autobots and Decepticons. I've also broken my "Autobots only" rule with the '86 animated movie cast as well.

So I voted for G1 homage as the primary reason. I'm not too keen on expanding my Bay-verse figures, so not sure what I'll do when AOA comes out.

    Probably buy more Transformers!
