Also to add, a lot of post office FAIL to mention that registered post does have insurance of up to $100 and some people pay extra for NOTHING.

Depends on the post office some measure your parcel and takes the above rough gauge. so is always +- a few bucks.

Just though I'd update this as postage cost went up a few months ago.

It now costs 70 cents to send a regular letter

Also parcel post upto 500g has gone up to $7.20

I also forgot to mention in the first post that you can send parcels over 500g and upto 22kg to people in the same metro for a flat rate of $9.75 which is pretty cool eg Bob lives in Bondi Syd. and wants to send a parcel weighing 17kg to Joe in Penrith Syd. Bob will only pay the flat rate of $9.75

According to my local PO anything over 2kg going interstate is supposed to be measured and then they charge you by cubic weight instead (although in saying this I have had some PO's not measure when they should of. If they don't measure it usually works out cheaper which is good for the customer ).
My advice for people sending multiple or large items make sure you pack your items smart and try and use a box as close to the size of the items you're sending as you can (avoid excess space in your parcel). This will save you money

If you use the self service they seem to only measure weight, unless there's some fancy height/width/length measurement thing going on with the lasers. I've found using the self service kiosks they usually always seem to give the flat rate for the same state or interstate.
