There is a setting to change the audio output to non hdmi, It's what I use to channel audio to my Logitech speakers.

Yep and it does nothing but give you 2ch sound. Doesn't really help I am afraid.

That certainly sucks but if it's any consolation, I can't see there being a whole lot of Nintendo games that really benefit from surround.

You might want to check your info though, this thread is pretty authoritative and doesn't mention 7.1.

Not really, try playing Mario Kart Wii with surround sound. It's a whole new experience. I can only imagine Mario Kart 8 being even greater but....

At least if you boot into Wii mode, it does have Dolby Prologic II. That's the crazy thing about this. The hardware is there to do it and Wii mode does it. However Wii-U does not.

    WTH?

Eh, i used to have a Logitech surround setup but got sick of the cabling and being told to turn it down

That definitely sounds like a licensing thing or general Nintendo cheapness/incompetence. One and the same thing really!

I'll go with both. They wanted to be cheap about it without realising the consequences. Sound is very important to dedicated gamers and they just alienated 80% of them. Great work Nintendo

The only saving grace would be an update that enables it but I wouldn't hold my breath. That implies that they are aware of the impact.

Personally, I find this very disappointing and has dulled the growing excitement I was gaining for the Wii-U. After enabling surround sound a couple of years ago and playing all my games and movies as such, It's hard go back to normal stereo - What is this the 70s?

I guess I will have to configure the receiver to just output the 2.0 signal on all speakers...geez not even 2.1..

Aha no, if only that could work. I had a 100 gift card for JB from christmas, and we used the 10% day at big w to get the console bundle.

Wouldn't surprise me if they just skipped it as they thought that people interested with that setup would either have the latest tech or not buy the Wiiu and go for PS4/Xbone.

Seeing less and less reason to get a WiiU lately...

I absolutely loved mario kart 8. It is honestly the best racing game that I've ever played... so much fun. It's good when the boys are around having a few beers and that gets wacked on... I'm looking forward to Bayonetta 2. It comes with the original one as well that will be getting a nice face lift and a heap of exclusive content.
