One day I'll get around to posting photos of my MISB display of Masterpiece. I have them ordered by small boxes (Eg cars) then large boxes. If I displayed them in order of release number it would look silly. That's another reason I don't get the focus on the numbering system.
There have been about 5 different box sizes since MP10 so far and the original mold uses (10, 11, 12, etc) have not even come out in order.
All the numbering can tell us is what shares the same mold and it hints at the characters name.
But the numbering is a quirk that Takara have been using since the MP-10 reboot and just like those black boxes the MP comes in, it would annoy me if they changed it. Through my work, home life, and collecting i really like consistency (not a big Ultra Magnus fan though).

I agree with you on the consistency of the boxes. I'd be annoyed if Takara went the way of Hasbro and changed the look of the boxes every year or so. My display at the moment is a mix of Takara and Hasbro Masterpieces which annoys me due to lack of consistency. After another year or so of Takara releases the display will have a uniform look.
I don't agree with you on Magnus though, come on????![]()
I have a list of all G1 characters that have been released in CHUG form. You can find it here. Please feel free to let me know if I got anything wrong so I can fix it.
Very nice display of boxes there. Now just wondering what's in that pink box.
